  1. Edgy, I asked the Inside Pitch guy about Matz after I saw your post. Here's his reply: Funny you should ask. I spoke with Hector Berrios while I was down there. Matz had his first EXST session on Friday. Berrios (who's the GCL pitching coach this year) said he's looking good. He didn't put him on the gun or anything yet, but he is in EXST working with the GCL club at the moment. Later

  3. Beautiful. I wonder how Ernie felt about how things changed since he gave that speech. You can't smoke in ballparks any more, and, those "tired old men of thirty-five" now can go to the Americal League and DH for five more years. Both are a shame. Thanks. Later
  4. Who can ever forget one of the key voices from their childhood? RIP Ernie. Later
  5. If anyone's going to criticize anything about the Mets so far this year, they'll have to spare the Rod. Later
  6. Havens is off the DL and doing well (see the adoption forum). My adoptee, Jordan Abruzzo, is still having back problems and I hope they won't be career ending. Later
  7. When I see "Phillies fans" I always think "class". Class D. Later
  8. Reese is off the DL and is playing at St. Lucie in order to get his swing back and to enroll in Second Base 101. Here are some notes from Inside Pitch (subscription): Reese is now hitting .313 and his timing and rhythm look very good. He got two hits, including a home run, off two lefty pitchers last night. Defensively, transition to second base looks promising, showing range to both sides and quickness to the bag. His release isnt the quickest, but he gets the ball out. Later
  9. That was great! Did you find that ad by accident, or did someone tell you about it? I'd never seen it before. It certainly answers my question about what inspired your KTE. Later
  10. Ohio is a Northern state. I spent a lot of time in Dayton (about an hour north of Cincy). While there, I'd read that Cincy is considered a Southern city with some "old-time Southern attitudes". Maybe because of its proximity to Kentucky. So, that's why you picked a racial angle for your KTE. It was the reason, wasn't it? Later
  11. Good news: The Bisons scored 7 runs last night, 6 off highly touted Cuban signee Aroldis Chapman. Bad news: They lost by 13 runs. That is not a misprint, boys and girls. http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb/stats/stats.jsp?sid=milb&t=g_box&gid=2010_05_03_louaaa_bufaaa_1 Chapman hit 100+ MPH four times, according to the stadium speed tracker. (102 MPH twice) Parnell, in his one inning, the only scoreless one thrown by a Bison, hit 98 and 99. Buffalo is now 15-10 on the season. They close out the homestand tonight with RA Dickey on the mound. He is working on a streak during which he has retired the last 27 batters he's faced. Later

  13. "That's the way it isgood for him, enjoy it. I wish he could do that for mehe was a horseshit player for me. He was very bad for me." Ozzie Guillen on Nick Swisher's success with the Yankees. (Anthony McCarron, New York Daily News) Apparently, Ozzie likes horse analogies. Later
  14. Willets Point wrote: Spahn was my next guess. Spahn had the great line "I played for Casey before and after he was a genius." My favorite Spahn line is: "The best pitch is strike one". Later
  15. Here's an update on the last class of free agent starters: John Lackey: 2-1, 4.50 ERA, 1.57 WHIP, 30IP (Lackey had one really bad start and has been walking more than usual) Joel Pineiro: 2-3, 5.76 ERA, 1.52 WHIP, 29.2IP (Pineiro was ripped in his last start, giving up 9ER in 3.1IP) Jason Marquis: 0-3, 20.52 ERA, 2.88 WHIP, 8.1IP (Marquis on on the DL for 4-6 weeks with a sore elbow) John Garland: 2-2, 2.57 ERA, 1.43 WHIP, 28IP Ben Sheets: 1-3, 7.12 ERA, 1.91 WHIP, 30.1IP Jarrod Washburn, Pedro (still free agents) Erik Bedard: Expected back in June Lackey I wanted. I thought the Mets should have gone after Pineiro when his price dropped. But so far it looks like Omar made the right non-moves. Later

  17. Picking up the thread. I waited until I resolved some technical problems that prevented me from being able to view the Buffalo (and other minor league) box scores. Aldrois Chapman is scheduled to pitch for Louisville against Buffalo tonight. Later
  18. Aroldis Chapman, the Cuban signee by the Reds who throws 100 MPH, is scheduled to pitch against YOUR Buffalo Bisons Monday. Later
  19. Maybe it was the Daily News camera crew that was accompanying him that kept him from being eviscerated. Later

    Larchmont

Didn't Joan Rivers used to mention in her stand-up act that she was from Larchmont? Later
  21. According to WFAN (or was it ESPN Radio?) earlier today, Green's injury has been re-diagnosed as a fracture. Later
  22. Of course I'm not criticizing Omar for his drafting. That's why I referenced Berg and Shirley - way before Omar. And Berg wasn't a Met. He has made some really good draft and International choices (Pelfrey, Ike, Mejia, etc.). Even before he was a GM, he was known for having a keen eye for talent. He has kept that up. I was just having fun with some of the terms in that scouting report and rooting Omar on to make another of his great picks. Later
  23. "Raw as a hitter". Is that another way of saying "Swings at everything and can't hit a breaking ball"? Just because a guy is "smart", it doesn't mean he will be able to hit. Moe Berg comes to mind. And, tools? Remember Al Shirley? Omar, howz about picking a ballplayer? Later
  24. More ace matchups from the Rubin blog on ESPN: Credit where credit is due department: Adam Rubin is the featured writer on the ESPN NY Mets blog, but that article was written by ace researcher Mark Simon. He does a lot of great stuff for ESPN NY and Baseball Tonight. Thanks. That's the trouble with blogs. I posted the site where a quote came from and forgot the actual writer. My bad. Later
