  1. There's also a negative race going on, the race for a protected #1 draft pick. IIRC, teams finishing in the lower half of W-L pct get to keep their #1 pick if they sign a type A free agent. Of course, this would be if they were to have the money to sign one. I'm still not convinced that they wouldn't come up with the money in support of a new front office/ managerial team. Later
  2. Lefty Specialist wrote: The five most common words from John Sterling's mouth..... "Just past a diving Jeter." Those aren't dives. He is just positioning his feet so that he can make those spectacular jump-throws to first. But, you're right. Someone should remind him you need the ball to be able to do that. Later
  3. I watched the '59 WS and couldn't believe Koufax could be beaten. RIP Later
  4. I read it on Yahoo and rushed here to say how much I liked it. Looks like others beat me to it. Later
  5. I was at that game. A businessman rented out a luxury box for about 25 people. (Funny, we haven't seem him since.) Later

Frayed Knot wrote: The other good thing about Prince (who I heard a few times although never, to my knowledge, saw) is that he wasn't shy about occasionally sampling the sponsor's products while working a game. IIRC, he had sampled so much of the sponsor's product during one game that afterwards he decided to dive into the pool at the hotel while fully clothed. He did it from a second story balcony. I'm pretty sure that Bob Uecker's character in Major League must have been modelled after Prince. His most famous call was when the Pirates scored 9 runs in the last half of the ninth to win a game. As the winning run crossed the plate, Prince said "We had 'em all the way". Later
  8. Frayed Knot wrote: Mel Allen & Bob Prince alone would be worth the price of admission. Especially if they are shown. For those of you who never saw Bob Prince (I'm ashamed that I didn't mention him in my retrospective Buc KTE), he and Lindsay Nelson must have shopped at the same sport jacket store. The only difference was, Nelson liked the more conservative ones. Later
  9. Crosby loved baseball, but as a part owner of the Pittsburgh Pirates he was too nervous to watch the Series against the Yankees, so he and his wife went to Paris, where they listened by radio. They broadcast World Series games to France back then? When I was in Paris many years later (the 80's) I couldn't find out the score of the Super Bowl. Later

IIRC, 2011 is the year they'll have to start paying Bobby Bonilla (and maybe Mo Vaughn). Will those numbers count against the team salary, or are they being paid separately from an annuity-type account? Later
  11. If the Rockies don't make the playoffs, a major reason will be their inability to handle the Snakes. Last I heard, they're at or under .500 against them this year. Later
  12. Welcome, big guy. Great first post. Aren't you glad I pointed this place out to you? (maybe you'll need more time to answer that.) Anyhow, rookie, get yourself up on the virtual table in the middle of the room, tell us about yourself and sing your school fight song. Carrying our bags to the plane is reserved for later in the season. Later
  13. Thank you. Later

  15. I had suggested to someone on another Mets board to join here. On that board, his screen name is 7Line, so I sent him a message asking if he was that guy who had applied. He said he wasn't, but said he'd take a look. Guess he liked what he saw. He just sent me a PM, so I know he's been activated, but he keeps getting a message that he can't post. Any ideas what happened to Lefty Specialist? Later
  16. the remaining games: Will Takahashi and Niese win their 10th games. Will Duda get his average over .250. Will the Mets finish at .500. Will Bay return for a few games. Will Davis break Straw's team record for RBI by a rookie. I'm a masochist. Later

I'm starting to think that there's almost nothing to lose in taking the Costanza Opposite Plan approach. Post signs that say "Ride 'Em Hard, and Put 'Em Away Wet With racehorses, they towel them down after they've been riddden. Putting them away wet would be treating them like a bunch of nags. Later
  20. I wonder if a batter hits the plaque with a home run, does he win a suit? Later
  21. If you look closely at the image on the plaque, it looks like George Steinbrenner being played by John Goodman. Later
  22. Frayed Knot wrote: All this reminds me about hearing recently that Georgia Frontierre (StL Rams - late '90s) was the first woman to own a franchise that won a championship. I remember that when Georgia took over the team, someone wrote "If hairspray was football smarts, Georgia Frontierre would be Vince Lombardi." I wonder if that person ever publically ate those words when Georgia's team won that championship? Later
