  1. Zip, I'll remember you as a Brooklyn Dodger and an original New York Met. I'll forgive you for going over to the dark side to become a major portion of Joe Torre's baseball I.Q. later in your career. R.I.P. Later

  8. Interesting: http://sports.yahoo.com/news/baseball-employment-revolution--why-thousands-have-signed-up-for-free-online-course-173025914.html Especially his estimate of how many will complete the course. Later

  12. Edgy MD wrote: I mean, he'll likely be further along, and better in that sense. That's kinda' what I meant, too. They'd already have a handle on how well he has adapted to the pros, rather than an untested draftee. Later
  13. The best part of this draft to me is that after it, we could find out who the PTBNL is from the Ike Davis deal. That player might be better than anyone they get in this year's draft. And, they'll be able to sign Kendry Morales without giving up a draft pick. Later
  14. Didn't a batter stepping out after every pitch to re-adjust the strap on the batting gloves start with the MFYs. (Mattingly?) I don't recall seeing any other players doing it before that. Later
  15. Frayed Knot wrote: And how often does a pitcher (or any player for that matter) get to be the final AB in one game and then throw the first pitch of the next? Interesting. There have been some good hitting pitchers over the years, so it may not be that rare. Something for the guys at Elias to check out. Later
  16. Zvon wrote: Don't be embarrassed. You get to be wrong sometimes. He was skinnier on the Braves but his legs were always thick. Hey, I know that coaches face. He always looked old. That's Minnie Minosa. Minnie was old when he was young. When talking about African-American coaches with the Mets, don't overlook Al Jackson who was with the organization, majors and minors, forever. (Yeah, I know, "Minor League Roving Instructor" isn't really a coach. Its just someone who performs coaching duties.) Later
  17. Frayed Knot wrote: Hits don't worry me if you are striking people out and not walking people, the babip will even out. The guys with all te walks worry m e, but I would rather see if they can turn it around than keep throwing an older guy who I feel won't out there. Maybe, especially since Walters (the only guy where I mentioned hits) isn't striking guys out either (10 in 17 innings). The only good sign is that there are only 2 HRs among those hits. But, still, 2.25 base runners per/inning is a recipe for disaster no matter how you slice it and there'd have to be a shitload of regression to the mean before that line begins to even get close to smelling good. Ryne Duren was a very effective relief pitcher for the MFYs. He was known for three things: A good fastball. (over 9k per IP) Thick glasses. A famous lack of control (6 BB per IP) He would add to the aura by throwing a warmup pitch to the backstop when he came into a game. Then, he would peer through his glasses, adjusting them frequently. Scared the shit out of the hitters. Not many of them dug in against him. Who knows? Black could be one of those guys. Or, he could be a pitcher who falls behind, has to come in with a fat strike and BAM! We'll see, Later

  23. Nymr83 wrote: so unless you're going to move them every season after an exhaustive analysis of the current roster (would mlb allow this even?) i dont see the point. IIRC, the last time MLB legislated on ballpark distances, it set the minimums of 330' (or was it 325'?) down the lines and 400' to dead center. As long as the teams adhere to those standards, any changes the home team wants to make to other distances or fence heights seem fair game. I guess you would need to ask for a waiver if you wanted any of those distances to be shorter. Later
