  1. Great job again, Ben. Signing Torres was a good move. I hope they do it again. Later
  2. Add to that Bal'mer list Nelson Cruz, who was originally signed by the Mets, then traded away as a minor leaguer: http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/c/cruzne02.shtml Later
  3. Edgy MD wrote: Candidate to get the Diamondbacks job (and possibly fired two days later): Joe McEwing. Randy Johnson said he's hoping Joe gets it, so he won't have to face him in an old timers' game. Later
  4. Charlie Finley proposed the 20 second "countdown clock" (among other things) when he owned the KC A's. IIRC, he had a clock installed in KC and MLB made him take it down. http://www.nytimes.com/1986/05/20/sports/scouting-the-pastime-according-to-charlie-o.html MLB rejected the ideas (his defense of "You want to speed up the game. Don't you?" fell on deaf ears). What's next? Orange baseballs? Later
  5. Ouch! I can only root for an NL team. But the Bucs are gone, and I can't bring myself to root for either of the teams that fled New York. And who can like what the Nationals did to the Mets this year? So, it has to be the Cards. Grudgingly. Later
  6. I don't think he's going to get a lot of suds, but this seems to be the thread for this. (Maybe it should be separate?) I believe that over the last two years, Carlos Torres has been the glue that has held the staff together. He has been used as a starter, middle man, setup man and closer. And for the most part, has done pretty well in each of those roles. Carlos, the next time I hoist a cold one, I'll be toasting you. I'll climb down off my soap box now. Later

  8. bmfc1 wrote: "Derek, after all the playoff games that you played in, what advice do you have for the players playing in their first post-season?" Jeter: "Keep the uniform you wear in the game. Think how much you'll be able to sell it for some day. If you want to be a successful whore, let Brandon Steiner be your pimp." Later
  9. IIRC, in The Long Season, Brosnan wrote that Rogers Hornsby (his team's hitting coach) told them to "Hit down on the ball. It will scoot through the infield like a scared rabbit". Hornsby hit a lot of homers, but it sounds like if he followed what he taught, he may have had a lot of ground ball hits. BTW - is this hit total official for Jeter? I heard a few weeks ago that the hit with which he set one of his records earlier this year (for shortstops? Moved into sixth place?) was later called an error by the official scorer. But, at least this year is finally over. This must have been what it is like to finally pass a kidney stone. Later
  10. If I lose, I'll PM you where to send my Rice-A-Roni, the San Francisco treat, and my copy of the home version of the game. Later
  11. "Jeter's Last" game will be on Turner Broadcasting today. The promo for the game says its "the game everybody has been waiting for". They're right. And some of us have been waiting 20 years. Later
  12. If one of them was Craig Brazell, I was at that game. Later

  14. Are they going to have a Bobby Abreu retirement ceremony? Later
  15. Jeter left the game after 2 AB, due to "injury" (According to Yahoo sports). So, if he doesn't play tomorrow, that will mean that all those people who paid mucho dinero for tickets for his last series only saw him play part of one game. I'm sad, I tells 'ya, real sad. snicker Later
  16. O ye of little faith. Had 'em all the way. Can I exhale now? Later
  17. From Baseball America, which is currently writing about the top 20 prospects in each minor league: 18. Wuilmer Becerra, of, Kingsport (Mets) Age: 19. B-T: R-R. Ht.: 6-4. Wt.: 190. Signed: Venezuela, 2011 (Blue Jays). Becerra was one of three players to sign for more than a million dollars as part of the Blue Jays’ 2011 international crop, which had the second-highest expenditure in the game at $7.6 million. He missed most of his first U.S. season because his jaw was wired shut after being broken on a pitch. Blue-chip prospects Noah Syndergaard and Travis d’Arnaud and Becerra were dealt for reigning Cy Young winner R.A. Dickey and extra pieces. Becerra made developmental strides this summer as his tools began to impact games. He has a gap-to-gap approach and above-average raw power, with strength and leverage in his righthanded stroke. He finished third in the league in home runs. His plate discipline and strike zone awareness will need to improve, as most of his strikeouts came out of the zone. His swing has length from a deep load and Becerra’s stride was inconsistent. The athletic Becerra moves well for his size and is at least an average runner out of the box who is an above-average runner underway. He ranges well in the outfield and has at least an average arm that should allow him to stay in right field. Later
  18. Just got it. Its about 8 pages, one full page of ads. They didn't even number the pages separately, but continued with the next available number. Your high school newspaper team could have done a better job. A few stories from opponents (including Bobby V) about how much they respected him. Poorly written and poorly executed. One dollar? Its not worth the paper its written on. I wonder how much the YLDBs in my office will offer me for it? Later
  19. It also happened recently in the newspaper with a motto that should be, "All the news that's shit, they print" - the Daily News. As noted here in the pool, there was no mention of the Mets game in either the on-line or the print edition. Later
  20. End-of-the-season series against the Astros still bring me flashbacks of John Paciorek. Later
