  2. Chris Young re-ups with MFYs. http://nypost.com/2014/11/08/yankees-re-sign-outfielder-mets-bust-chris-young/ Later

Edgy MD wrote: It's amazing how that collision by Rusty --- which is perhaps my earliest specific baseball memory --- is merely modest by today's standards, but in a world before wall padding ended up being disabling. Heck he probably hit support post there too. Remember, Force = Mass X Acceleration. And Rusty was a lot of mass moving toward that wall. Later
  4. Monell, signed to a minor league contract, may one day replace Centeno on the major league roster. But he will never replace him in our hearts. Later
  5. Frayed Knot wrote: As would I. I'm just throwing out examples here and the Yanx are in a situation where they're locked into McCann for a while, can't really DH/1B him except on occasions on account of having to DH Beltran, ARod, and Teixeira on a semi- (or more) regular basis just to keep them on the field, When they signed McCann, a lefty power hitting catcher in YSIII, they thought they might get Yogi Berra numbers. They got Johnny Blanchard. In those pre-DH days, Berra moved to left field, Elston Howard caught, and Blanchard filled in. He still hit over 20 HR in 1961. Later
  6. Ex-Met farmhand Alan Zinter signed as assistant hitting coach by Houston. Why in this thread? Because he was traded for Rico Brogna. Later
  7. When I heard that Madden had officially signed (WCBS? WFAN?) the reporter also said that Renteria was offered a different job in the Cubs organization. No word on whether he accepted it. Later
  8. Losing Brown, one of their few righty hitting outfielders, and with Satin (another righty hitter) also let go from the 40 man roster, makes me think they are confident they will sign a Cuddyer-like player. Later
  9. My boy! Do the family proud, Juan. Buena suerte. Later
  10. Thanks for the "gotcha'". Guess I didn't RC. Later
  11. IIRC, Minoso, Tiant or Olivo would be the first Cuban-born player elected to the Hall on the general ballot. Martin DiHigo was elected by the group that voted for the Negro Leagues. Later
  12. I'll just mumble something about "National League Superiority" to the YLDBs in my office and move on - just a little sad. Later

Frayed Knot wrote: Even though I'm not the uber-nerdy prospect-head with nine fantasy teams going at once that tend to make up the majority of participants at John Sickels' 'Minor League Ball' site (arguments about who should be the 14th best prospect in each system are beyond both my knowledge and my interest) one of the things I like about that site is that Sickels makes it a regular point to go back and examine past evaluations (both his and others) in an effort to see where they were right, where they were wrong, and/or what's changed in the interim. Yesterday's topic involved one Juan Lagares (and, no, auto-correct Nazi, I don't mean Juan Laggers) and seeing how, going back to 2012, reports initially viewed him as a bat-first left-fielder or future utility man. It's not really clear exactly what changed or why his defensive skills were missed by early observers, but clearly things did as both the naked eye and all defensive metrics put him at the top of his position from almost the minute he reached the majors. Sometimes, as John himself says at the bottom of the comments section, "It is a good example of how we basically dont know shit. We know more about baseball than we used to. We are learning more every day. We can make better predictions. But they are still just predictions, and Weird Shit will still happen sometimes." Apparently the one defensive stat they all missed (but I didn't when I adopted him) was all those outfield assists. You don't get mid-teen assists with an average arm. You DO get them with a poor arm, because other teams run on you. But none of the scouts said his arm was poor. I had confidence Juan was the real deal. Later
  14. When I see "Jose Canseco shot" the word I'm expecting next is "up". And there's the word "steroids" somewhere in the story. What a doofus. Later
  15. Frayed Knot wrote: I think John Schiambi is the p-b-p radio guy. Not sure who's doing color. Now that you mention it, that sounds right. If it is, he is usually paired with Aaron Boone. Boone certainly has the blood lines to know his baseball. Thanks. Later
  16. According to ESPN radio, the last team to win game 7 of a World Series on the road was the '79 Pirates. BTW- who are the two guys in the booth on radio? They are very good. I'm guessing the color guy is an ex player - excellent insight. The PBP guy makes me think this isn't his first rodeo, either. I've been waiting, coming back from break, for them to say "This is ______ and _______" but if they've said it, I've missed it. Later
  17. Rated #3 prospect by several minor league rating sites. Shame. Later
  18. Ceetar wrote: The big scary slugger is Duda anyway. Nah. He's more like the Sta-Puff Marshmallow Man in Ghostbusters. He still is big and powerful and can cause a lot of destruction. But he's kinda' cute and cuddly, not scary. Later
  19. Petit has not only been a good pitcher in the post season, but a good luck charm, too. Later
  20. Edgy MD wrote: Hey kids, grab a deadline deal in this thread and find out how it worked out! Kendrys Morales down the stretch for the Twins: 162 PA: .234 / .259 / .325 // .584. Gulp! Josh Willingham going from the Twins to the Royals has worked out just fine for Willingham. Later
  21. Frayed Knot wrote: What, no Murphy?!? Combining this comment with those made about the World Series TV announcers in another thread, Harold Reynolds must have a high Q Rating among both network executives and people who voted for the Gold Glove. Murphy made fewer errors at second base this year than Reynolds did in two of the years he won the Golden Glove. And Reynolds played at least half of his games on artificial turf, while Murphy didn't have that advantage (fewer bad hops on turf). Later
  22. d'Kong76 wrote: I just voted on G-F's link and Lagares is winning the reader poll with 95% of the vote... landslide! But it is a reader poll on ESPN New York. I wonder how the vote is going in the cities where the other two candidates play. (The 4 % not voting for Legares must be MFY fans (or folks who have never watched him play). Later
  23. Edgy MD wrote: The greater story and greater question, though, is... Department of Homeland Security? They probably intercepted a phone conversation about the bikini set during which someone said they're "da bomb!". Later

Giants 3B Pablo Sandoval has reached base in 24 consecutive postseason games, tied for fourth-longest streak behind Miguel Cabrera (31, 2011-13), Chase Utley (27, 2007-09) and Boog Powell (25, 1966-71). Wait, I thought Jeter held all post-season records!! Only the important ones. I guess since they played this in an AL park, there was some rule that said it had to last as long as a usual Al game. The only thing in sports that lasts longer then that 5 run half inning is a hockey post game show. Later
  25. Wow! Billie Sol Estes and Scipio Spinks mentioned in the same thread. I love this place. Later
