  1. Reminds me of the old days when arm surgery was not a sure thing. They would put a pitcher mid year on the DL to "rest it to see if it gets better". Of course, most of them didn't get better. So, the following spring training, they would realize they should have operated the prior year. So they would operate, and the pitcher (and the team) lost another full year of production. Arm surgery isn't as risky these days, but shoulder surgeries are more complicated than elbows. But with the improved diagnostic techniques available these days (CAT, MRI) the Doctors should be able to more accurately predict the outcomes. (As you know, I'm not a Doctor. But my Mother always wanted me to become one.) Later

  3. Haven't seen it yet, but have just read this thread. Sound track - Better than the Flash Gordon one by Queen? (which was written specifically for that movie) Later
  4. I sent a very simple email asking why I should be charged for something I did not order. I received this prompt reply: Thank you very much for reaching out to us at the News-Times. Could you please confirm your delivery address? I will make sure that you are not charged the extra dollar for this special edition once I can confirm your delivery address. Sincerely, Pat Colligan Customer Care Manager Hearst Connecticut Media Group Thanks all for your suggestions. Later
  5. Trachsel My Tears wrote: they took it up another step and canonized Jeter. Now, HERE is a concept. I'm imagining a great big cannon, like from the Civil War, sitting at home plate, pointing out towards the deepest part of CF, and them lighting this cartoonish fuse, all sparkling and shit, and the stands filled to standing-room, chanting the countdown "10, 9, 8..." concluding with the Captain making a spectacular takeoff, as John Sterling intones in his robotic fashion, "It is high, it is far...." And Suzyn Waldman will shriek, "OH MY GAWD! Derek Jeter is in the bleachers!" Later

Just say that they are, in effect, selling you something you didn't sign up for & don't want, and if they insist on charging you a dollar for it that you intend to pay by taping a dollar bill to a brick and depositing it through the front window of their office. OK maybe not that last part, but there's no way in hell they'd get my dollar and that if they insist it would be the final dollar they see from you. I'll save that for the corporate person, whose performance evaluation is probably tied in part to the success of things such as this. Later
  7. I called the Managing Editor of the News-Times. He said he knew about the program, but didn't realize there wasn't an opt out. I described the insult to the feelings of Mets (and probably the Red Sox) fans in the area. He said he recently moved here from St. Louis and is a Cardinals fan. I told him some of the comments that have been posted in this thread and asked how if he would feel if he had to pay extra for a Cubs tribute. He laughed, and said now he knows exactly how we feel. He suggested I contact the head of subscription services at the Hartford Office (the paper is one of many owned by a Hearst group there). I'll let you know if I get a response. Later

  9. OK, you convinced me. Its the Danbury News-Times. You can't make this shit up. BTW, here's a suggestion I got from a long time acquaintance: "You should tell your newspaper that in honor of Jeter's range at shortstop, they should cover only half their subscription area with the edition and exclude your area." Later

  11. Zvon wrote: You could also buy it and hawk it on E-bay for 4 bucks. But we will lose all respect for you. BOO. What I'll probably do is call them, let them know I am a Mets fan, and refuse delivery of that day's paper. (As though I were going to be away) Then, tell them I do not want to be charged for it. But I'd love to listen to some of the calls they'll be getting from the many Red Sawks fans in the area. (heh heh) Later
  12. I received a postcard today. It was from my local newspaper, which I have been receiving for over 30 years. it said: "Dear Loyal Subscriber, We wanted to tell you about an exciting edition of the ___-_____ coming soon. Friday, September 26th, every subscriber will receive the ___-_____ delivered to their home and included will be a special section dedicated to the career and retirement of Derek Jeter. This full-colored section will be a keepsake, jam-packed with photos, stories and quotes dedicated to the Yankee Shortstop. All subscribers will be charged an additional $1.00, which will be reflected in your next subscription payment. Sincerely, The ___-_____ Subscriber Services." What would you folks do? Later
  13. They can help deGrom by keeping Hamilton at 55 SB. How? Start Juan Centeno. He was the only catcher in the majors to nab Hamiltion attempting to steal last year. Later
  14. batmagadanleadoff wrote: I'm getting sick and tired of how anyone who dares to criticize Derek Jeter acts as if they're also obligated to qualify their objections by first reminding everyone of just how great and awesome Jeter supposedly is. Proud to say that we here in the Pool are not guilty of doing that. We are the purveyors of unqualified criticism. Later
  15. Gwreck wrote: Which Boston Red Sox do you hate? David Ross. He's been a backup catcher for a dozen years, has made over $17 million and has never had more than 311 AB in any year. And what was that about leaving Van Hale.... er, never mind. But I still don't like him. All that money for nothing. What Diamondback do you have venom for? Later
  16. Flores has not only shown the ability to play short, but has actually made some eye-popping plays recently as he has become more comfortable. And his bat has really picked up. So, when I got home from work, the game was over and I checked out the box score. Tejada started at short tonight? Any reason given? Is Flores hurt? Later

  18. Megdal tells it like it is about Jeter. Really! Be still my heart. http://www.sbnation.com/mlb/2014/9/2/6097443/derek-jeter-batting-order-team-player-joe-girardi-lou-gehrig If the link doesn't work, its to be found on SB Nation. Later

  23. Back to the 4 hit game, but who cares? Out of last place. Later
  24. Last time I looked (a few days ago) the top 5 teams in the organization were a cumulative 100 games over .500. That's a mixed blessing. It speaks well for the organization. But, unlike in some prior years, I don't think too many players will be brought up one level for the playoffs because their team is participating in their own playoffs. And I don't see too many Las Vegas players being brought up to the majors until their playoff season is over. Later
  25. I think (hope) Reynolds can develop into a more than adequate major league shortstop who can hit. I picture him along the lines of Marco Scuttaro, who has played more than 10 years in the majors, mostly as a regular. Later
