  1. Sent to AAA to be re-stretched out as a starter (he used to be one). Then, called up in September for a few spot starts. 1-3 3.85. Later
  2. Edgy MD wrote: Cespedes gives us a highlight in today's split squad exhibition with Houston. Maybe he was practicing for a "dead ball" ruling he would get when a ball is hung up in the ivy in Wrigley Field. That's what Spring Training is for - preparing for real situations that would come up in an actual major league game. Or it was a real brain fart. Later
  3. He'll step in for an injured [crossout:1r8n80ve]Wally Pipp[/crossout:1r8n80ve]David Wright before mid year and go on to play All-Star level third base for the Mets for the next decade. This year, .288- 20- 80. And it will be only the beginning. Later
  4. All it will take is a strong outing against KC in one (or both) of the two season opening games to restore his confidence. He will get them, and go on to a monster year as the best closer in the NL. The only bad thing is that the Mets will have so many games in which they have a huge lead that he won't have as many save opportunities as some other closers. Who cares? He'll know he's the best. We'll know he's the best. That's all that counts. Later
  5. 35-50 IP for the team, so-so success (1.37 WHIP, 4.18 ERA) Nothing to write home about, but he's be a major leaguer most of the year. Later
  6. Frayed Knot wrote: Born within 9 months of each other to Italian immigrants living on the same street, they both started in the major leagues in the same year before, as noted above, dying exactly six months apart. He often spoke about growing up with Yogi in the "Dago Hill" section of St. Louis. I read his book "Baseball is a Funny Game" many years ago. It was my dad's. I guess it was lost when he moved, because I would have wanted to keep it. There are may stories in it that I still remember. It wasn't a "kiss and tell" book like the Jim Brosnan and Jim Bouton books years later, but still showed a side of baseball we hadn't read in the papers. It is still available on Amazon and I would highly recommend it. RIP, Joe. Later
  7. Somewhere between the numbers already posted in this thread. .260 28 95. And doing it in bunches. Still some dry spells that will drive the fans to their phones to rant on WFAN about trading him immediately. Later
  8. Edgy MD wrote: I'm guessing because when the face of the game retires, he is invited to act as a semi-official ambassador for the game. Of course you're right. You thought my "guess" was serious? Anyhow - The thought of him now becoming the face of the game emeritus gives me the urge to regurge. Later

  10. Fixed, thanks. Later
  11. By now you've read that there was an exhibition baseball game played between the Tampa Bay Rays and the Cuban National Team. It was attended by Presidents Obama and Castro. https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/early-lead/wp/2016/03/22/derek-jeter-attends-historic-u-s-cuba-baseball-game-obama-and-Castro-do-the-wave/ There was a heartwarming side story about a Cuban-born minor leaguer who was reunited with his family. But, accompanying the Major League team were Joe Torre (ok, he works in the MLB office), Jose Cardenal (ok, he was born in Cuba) and Derek f'n Jeter!!! He said he was there because he "had played with a lot of Cuban ballplayers". Well, so did every other player from that era. So why was he there? I'm guessing it was because the ballpark in Cuba was the only stadium in the Western Hemisphere he didn't visit during his year long [crossout]fellatiation[/crossout] retirement tour and he was afraid he missed out on some gifts. What ever happened to Yankee Go Home? Later I love it when I have a chance to take a swipe at Jeter.
  12. I'm getting concerned about Matz. Has he had one decent performance this Spring? When this stuff happens, it can be one of two things 1) He overthrowing, and his stuff is flattening out, or 2) He's tipping his pitches. Both are correctable, but if this keeps up, he could spend the early part of the season in the minors. Later
  13. Are his aches and pains this Spring something to be concerned about? I think not. They're the typical Spring Training ouchies, as muscles get back into shape. He will work his arse off to get the ace label on this talented staff. The results? 18-6, 2.67, 8.7 K/IP 1.14 WHIP. Later

  15. He's been playing both infield and outfield in Spring Training, and doing fairly well (as much as you can tell from box scores). That versatility might just get him a spot on the major league team at some point of the season. He seems like a good kid. I'll be rooting for him to make it. Later
  16. He'll get into 60 games, mostly for defense and pinch hitting. He'll go .278/ .320/ .355. Then he'll be traded to fill another need toward the end of the season. Later
  17. In a post game interview seen on SNY last night, Noah said he will be going to the barber for a trim. He said his hair is so long it has been (I paraphrase) blowing toward his face and bothering him when he pitches. Later
  18. CBS Sports reported that Harvey gave up 6 runs in a minor league game against the Cards' AAA team. Amazin Avenue quoted him saying he wasn't concerned with results, just pitch count. Later
  19. I was at work, trying to get an in-game box score. I tried Yahoo, ESPN and MLB.com and they only had the line score. Any other site I should have checked? Of course, now I'm home, the game is over, and I can find it. But, for future reference ...? Later
  20. He is going to prove he belongs in the mix for a future full time job by positively raking at AAA. Then he'll be called up in September to play fairly regularly once the Mets have clinched the home field advantage in the playoffs (around Sept 12th). With Walker having one year left on his contract, and the uncertainty of Wright's health long term, lots of options will be explored. And Gavin's performance with be examined carefully. Once brought up he will continue to mash .285/ .365/ .425 and play shortstop better than many of the in-house candidates. Later
  21. Wait, what? Edigolis Villasmil is a minor league free agent? My kid? How did I miss that? Was he released, or not protected from the past minor league portion of the Rule V draft? He didn't even call us to let us know. Later
  22. G-Fafif wrote: Could go back on pop-ups like Buddy Harrelson. I don't think I've ever seen a shortstop who could go back on pop-ups like Buddy, especially those down the third base line that could have fallen for doubles. Anyhow, back to Ruben. I was impressed by his high OBP as a youngster, never realizing the elite company he was in. Sad that was his best and he couldn't maintain or improve on it. I liked him and wish him well. Later
  23. How old is the kid? I didn't see it in the posts above. Early Wynn's son used to not only get into the clubhouse, but on the field, too. He took batting practice against his dad. And I remember reading about how Ken Griffey Jr. used to spend a lot of time with his dad while pop was at the ballpark. Unless the kid is a real pain in the butt (and the story says he's a good kid), what's the problem? If the kid is old enough to know when to stay out of everyone's business/ game preparation, why the ban? Later
  24. G-Fafif wrote: If LaRoche had retired sooner, Mets would be working on their umpteenth consecutive division title. (Yeah, umpteenth.) If necessary, I'll personally drive him to the airport and load his luggage on the plane. Later
