  1. Josh Smoker blew a save for the Pirates today, in a game they won in extra innings. Later
  2. Who says you need a great cleanup hitter? Well, they have one (or more), just not batting fourth. And, nine runs with no homers? Wow! Later

  4. How can the MFY game be delayed? They're playing in an f'n DOME. They couldn't fit Michael Kay's head under it? Later
  5. He gave so much. He did so much. And in later years, he suffered so much. RIP. Later

  7. I handled the 1963 yearbook in the Polo Grounds, too. Later
  8. Any player who can hit 31 HR righthanded is a welcome addition. But Pawtucket was a Red Sox affiliate. Those righty homers should have had them, and their fans, salivating. So why did they sell him to the Pirates after that season? Bad fielder? The Sox have the DH. Strikeout prone? His numbers weren't even close to being off the charts.(109 in 450 AB) So, there's got to be something .... Maybe the Sox had several better, and younger, prospects. I dunno. But, let's find out. Welcome, Bryce. Later

G-Fafif wrote: Happened to catch the introduction to the afternoon program on WFAN today in which the recorded introduction let us know the broadcast would be coming to us live from "Steinbrenner Stadium" in Tampa. WFAN is the MFYs' flagship radio station. There is no facility called Steinbrenner Stadium. But this is what happens when you have unnatural affiliations. I realize it has been the the MFY's station for a few years, but WFAN was the flagship station of the Mets for so long that now, when I hear John Sterling's voice on it, its like hearing an Ayatollah at a Bar Mitzvah. 10. He'll come up in September and pitch well enough to have Mets fans who haven't heard of him before asking, "Where has THIS guy been all year?" (and not in the way you've been hiding your crazy uncle from polite company) Later
  11. I think they should have signed recently released Scott Kazmir for the major league minimum and seen what he has left in the tank. There's no structural damage, he was suffering from the typical Spring Training "tired arm". Yes, IMO, if this is their only signing, this is abad move. Later
  12. Benjamin Grimm wrote: Is John Belushi's 1941 a remake of From Here to Eternity? Or of Tora Tora Tora? Of course not. But what about all the different versions of biographical films, from Lincoln to Churchill? You're right (happy?) The Titanic film wasn't a remake. But it was certainly telling the story of the ship going down from a different standpoint. As I said, I was just trying to provide a public service - letting folks know those two movies would be on tonight. No good deed goes unpunished. sigh Later
  13. Benjamin Grimm wrote: Titanic: Real life event. King Kong: Fiction And both were based on somebody's screenplay interpretation. Later
  14. Benjamin Grimm wrote: James Cameron's movie wasn't a remake, though. It was a new film about a subject that's been filmed before. I get that. Instead of only taking the perspective of the rich folks, it took the perspective of some poor folks, too. But that's like saying that each version of King Kong isn't a real remake because some of the story lines (character motivations) are different. Its still about a big ape on an island falling in love with a beautiful girl. This is about a famous ship sinking, and the passengers on it. And this version sucked. Spoiler alert When Leonardo DiCaprio's body floated by, I felt like standing up and cheering. Again, the other two are on TV tonight. And that was the purpose of my post, to alert the movie buffs who might want to see them (again). Later
  15. This was released too early to make Vic's list, but Titanic (1997) doesn't deserve to be in the lifeboat when compared to two movies on the same subject that preceded it - Titanic (1953) and especially Night to Remember (1958). Decide for yourself, because both of the older movies will be shown tonight on TCM (Turner Classic Movies). Later
  16. How could any Mets fan vote for anything with Clueless Joe's picture on it, especially that picture? Later
  17. In Kevin Plawecki's locker? (Yes, I'm a baaaad boy) Later
  18. Both teams using it. Yadier f'n Molina filling the spot for the bad guys. PJ Conlon has given up one hit in 4 IP. Mets up 1-0. RBI hit by Frazier. Later
  19. Ho-Jo Rangers' hitting coach - gets hit: http://abcnews.go.com/Sports/rangers-hitting-instructor-howard-johnson-hit-face-foul/story?id=53991780 Later
  20. G-Fafif wrote: Braves release Scott Kazmir, beset by arm fatigue. He is owed the $16 million remaining on his contract, He says he didn't know he was supposed to pitch today, and threw 100 pitches (not in a game) on Wednesday. https://www.yahoo.com/sports/reports-braves-release-16m-former-star-scott-kazmir-bizarre-circumstances-230807432.html A team signing him would only have to pay him the major league minimum and the Braves would still be on the hook for the balance of the contract. This is how the Mets signed Reyes last year. Hmmmmmm Later
  21. The Mets with the DH and the Cards not? Is that allowed? Its spring training and they can do whatever they want, but two teams playing by different sets of rules? I haven't noticed if this has happened before. Later
  22. John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: I like the attempted whimsy of the 83 cover but not really sure its executed as well as it was imagined. So many other illustrated covers did it better. And that is why I voted for 1996. And, in case they forgot to remind us (which they should have) 1996 was the tenth anniversary of a World Series victory. Later
  23. I was at the opening series at the Polo Grounds. We were in the upper deck behind home plate. The bullpens were far away and it was tough to read the uniform numbers of relievers warming up. Casey called for one and I turned around to the guy behind me who had binoculars and asked "Who is that out there?" He said "Santa Claus". I turned back around toward the field. It was snowing. (flurries) Later
  24. Lefty Specialist wrote: Boy, Robles was promising once but made a U-turn somewhere along the way. That turnaround looks like what's been happening to his pitches. Later
