  2. In 1959, the Boston Red Sox signed Davis, the first Black player that the team, with its revolting history of racism, ever signed. There was a strong suspicion throughout all of baseball that the Red Sox signed Davis only as a means to sign Mays. Mays had been playing in the major leagues by 1959. How did the Sox think they could sign him? And to use a SABR writer as a source of that? Willie Mays, for a decade, batting next to Ted Williams in the order, playing next to him in Fenway Park's vast centerfield? Last time anyone checked, the centerfield fence in Fenway is under 400', one of the shortest in the majors; hardly vast. The writer may have been a fan, but he has a whole lot of baseball learning to do. Later
  3. Edgy MD wrote: Not shown is Johnny Bench. Bench was as good as any catcher ever at just about all parts of his game. But only if he had done it as long as, say, Carlton Fisk, would his career have surpassed Henderson's. Juan Marichal wasn't shown, either - He is a Hall of Famer, too. Later
  4. As long term backup catchers go, he hit better than Bob Uecker but wasn't as funny. He showed just enough for us to say, he wasn't doing a bad job. But when he did a good job, it was occasionally in a big spot that got him back page headlines. Every team needs a Tomas Nido. I wish him well, hoping one of those occasional good games isn't against the Mets. Later
  5. =Centerfield post_id=159736 time=1718814590 user_id=65] I say each year we can just send Ben to Peru. No one listens.
  6. I've never existed a day when Willie Mays couldn't be identified as the greatest ballplayer alive. I doubt I'm ready to start https://www.faithandfearinflushing.com/2024/06/19/willies-timing/now. A beautiful tribute, Greg. Later
  7. =Fman99 post_id=159673 time=1718763831 user_id=86] In Alvarez we trust
  8. Willie would play a double header , then go out and play stickball with the kids in the neighborhood. And that joy in playing the game is how I'll remember him. Later
  9. Greg Maddux. He didn't have the Nolan Ryan fastball. He didn't have the Koufax curve. He looked easy to hit. He wasn't. Later
  10. dinosaur jesus wrote: I got to see him play. I've been bragging about that for fifty years. I saw Mickey, Willie and the Duke call centerfield home in four NY ballparks. Ah, the memories. Later
  11. Uh oh. Another pitcher named Moreno. I've been following Luis Moreno who has been making a slow and unspectacular climb through the organization (he's now at Binghamton) for years. I had a co-worker with that name and got interested in Luis. Now I'll have to pay more attention when I read the minor league box scores. I keep telling them to check with me when they sign guys, but they just don't listen. Later
  12. WFAN's Evan Roberts said if the Mets win the World Series, he'll have a tattoo of Grimace on his ass. I wonder how Tyrone Taylor feels today. (and those two comments have nothing to do with each other. This is not to imply that Tyrone already has a Grimace tattoo on his butt.) Later
  13. He'll catch on somewhere. Later
  14. Edgy MD wrote: As I just wrote, yes. Cross posted. Thank you Later
  15. Can I change my vote in our poll? Things have changed over time. Later
  16. The memories of players like Mays and Snider playing the outfield in their final years are still etched in my mind. To paraphrase an old baseball saying, "if he drives in more than he lets in, keep him". When he reaches that tipping point, you could keep him as a DH. But that avenue is blocked by JD. The problem may work itself out as we see how the team looks at the trading deadline. So if the defensive decline continues, if they haven't already, they should explore possible trading partners. Later
  17. My kid blew the save last night but picked up his first win. His ERA now stands at 1.42. Later
  18. Game time's at 4:10 today - waitin' on Ashie for the IGT. Later

  20. While we're waiting, I just checked the minor league box scores. The Florida Coast League (short season A ball) Mets team has two players, named Zitella (3B) and Zayas (DH), in the lineup tonight. Has any Mets team, majors or minors, ever had two players with last names starting with Z? I can't remember one. Later
  21. Edgy MD wrote: Rashomony is a good word. It kind of sounds like a name for what Toshiro Mifune had to pay his ex-wife for support every month. Bring back the BOC if for no other reason than that line. Later
  22. Waiting on Ashie for the next IGT. Tick Tick Later
  23. Benjamin Grimm wrote: Pet peeve: When people say Bobby returned to the dugout "disguised as Groucho Marx". That's pretty far from the truth. The magic word was "yerouttahere". Later
  24. I felt there were no words to adequately describe how I felt that day, no adequate punishment for what he did. But G-Fafif's column captured that feeling. Later
  25. =kcmets post_id=159107 time=1718328536 user_id=53] Well, here we go! Unless, I'm on live-tv pause and it's over already...
