1. Well I owe that discovery to the UMDB, but I my have found him.. http://www.beta.mbtn.net/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/bullpen1.png> Is that Scott Holman on the left? And was this really from 1986? Some of that Year to Remember video includes non-86 footage
2. Not very surprising but Snooze reports they're at work on a deal to get Wright off the 40 and into the front office as a figurehead "special assistant" to Brodie Van Workplace.
3. Edgy MD wrote: Just to be clear, the Mets have attained a pitcher named "Walker." Yeah he's on the 40 now too. I guess what Brodie is doing here is addressing the rap that the Mets' farm is too "bottom heavy" by rebalancing the amount of near-ready and not-ready guys. The Indians were pretty much doing the same thing when they acquired Lockett from San Diego for a longer-horizoned pitching prospect Ignacio Feliz. That trade was made just ahead of clubs locking the rosters for Rule 5 so it's assumed Lockett would have been left unprotected by San Diego. Lockett is a big dude at 6-5, 225 and perhaps can grow into Bobby Wahl someday.
4. I'm actually on the Zamora Bandwagon, not because I truly believe in him but because somebody has to have the role and he's somebody. That said I'm all for mixing in a few other somebodies. Someone already brought up Ollie; I'd totally give him a MiLB deal. Not breaking the bank on this shit though
5. the ybor city plan they floated a few months back apparently won't happen. I could see them taking off for Portland. Perhaps they take over Miami and the Marlins go back to Montreal. That would be sweet
6. I'm having a hard time imagining the use-case for Davis, much less justify coughing up 3 decent-looking lottery tickets for him, unless it's to purposefully get a pitcher-hitter guy. Can't McNeil provide backup at the corers and also hit? Rivera (I personally am a Rivera skeptic, but just for argument's sake?) This must be what Brodie has in mind. I'll bet he thinks he Davis is actually two guys, which is why he was willing to part with three for him.
7. Had fun this morning looking into Kong's brief and unofficial run as no. 5: http://www.mbtn.net/?p=3007http://www.mbtn.net/?p=3007
8. Speed, power and whiffs. I think he's a good defensive guy, though. Certainly not good for all you Lagares fans
9. Some Guy On The Internet reports the Mets have signed LHP Hector Santiago, x-White Sock & Angel, former starter turned reliever
10. Terrific. Gotta admire his competitiveness, and as I noted in the TCD thread, the idea that papers compete anymore is almost dead. Love knowing Newsday had a 4 am deadline and the contrast to today's shove-it-out-there deadlines. Love that he saw an oiled 1B glove on the stool, damn! I was worried Marty was sick or something, hadn't seen him out there in some time.
11. Benjamin Grimm wrote: I didn't vote for either of these covers in the first round either. I preferred the News' take on Wilmer's walk-off homer and the Post version of David Wright's farewell. I think HEART OF THE CITI is a much better cover than A WRIGHT TO REMEMBER. http://leaptoad.com/mets/covers/2018/20180416_NYDN_02.jpg> http://leaptoad.com/mets/covers/2018/20180930_NYP_01.jpg> Same! We were robbed
12. Well, I haven't voted for either yet, but I'll say it: the Wright cover has a dumb headline. The pun is too cheesy and not clever enough to be IMO a true TCD winner. I also don't like that they change the coloring AND italicize half the headline. Just do one or the other! I also think the Newsday cover is flawed fwiw: I don't like it when the subhead continues a headline instead of illuminating it, but they made that problem for themselves by choosing a pun that boxed them in to having to do that. I didn't support either of these covers as they advanced through the ranks I don't think, and I'm gonna hold my nose and vote for one now.
13. This topic title reads like one of those lolcat memes. Mets Can Has Harper Home Runs LOL Thanx
14. Mets sign OF Rymer Liriano and RHRP Arquidemes Caminero to minor league contracts & invite them to spring training. Liriano is a former Top prospect for San Diego who never delivered as a big leaguer; Caminero ("65 tons of American Pride") most recently pitched in Japan but I remember the name anyway when he was in Pittsburgh. Caminero, 31, has earned 40 saves over the last two years while pitching for the Yomiuri Giants in Japan. He appeared in 20 games in 2018 going 1-1 with 11 saves with a 5.79 ERA (12 earned runs/18.2 innings) before undergoing right elbow surgery. The 6-4, 245-pounder notched 29 saves and four holds with 65 strikeouts in 63.1 innings for the Giants in 2017. Caminero is 7-5 with a 3.83 ERA (66 earned runs/155.0 innings) and 143 strikeouts in 149 career major league games with Pittsburgh, Miami and Seattle. He is currently pitching for Leones del Escogido in the Dominican Winter League and has not allowed a run in five outings (5.0 innings). Liriano, 27, has appeared in 59 major league games between the Padres and White Sox. He's scored 17 runs, collected four doubles, hit two homers and driven in 12 runs while batting .220 (33-150). The 6-0, 230-pounder hit .253 (89-352) with 20 homers, 59 RBI, 62 runs scored and 11 stolen bases in 102 games in the Pacific Coast League for Salt Lake and Colorado Springs last year. The right-handed hitter has compiled a .272 (967-3,551) batting average, 198 doubles, 34 triples, 105 homers, 489 RBI, 208 stolen bases and 574 runs scored in 963 minor league games.
15. Last 2 seasons of Tuesdays were pretty brutal overall. We considered Wednesdays this year but stayed with Tuesday with hopes our luck will change
16. Well, we're on again this year. 11 Tuesday games (out of 12, we're skipping the early April Twins game) including the MFYs in July (worst and most expensive seats in the set). The Lunch family also plotting a late June visit... to Wrigley this time. I know I suck for spending $$ on the Mets but I just did. What are your plans for showing up at [CROSSOUT]Shea[/CROSSOUT] chitty?
17. The Pest https://nypost.com/2019/01/03/new-york-daily-news-eliminates-sports-editor-position/covering its decimated rival's travails. Damn what a travesty, I liked when the 2 tabs were infused with the energy of fighting one another, now it's no contest. ROLL OUT THE BARROW News whacks sports editor
18. Once faced the Cubs, at home, with a runner on first, and no outs, in the 8th inning, and got to an 0-2 count, in a game the Mets were losing 4-0. I believe he'd thrown 7 pitches to that point. How could I forget
19. Vic Sage wrote: You're skeptical of Lagares because of his injury history, so you want... Pollack? Yes. I know. But Pollack at least can contribute with the stick if he's healthy whereas with Lagares so much of his value is wrapped up in his ability to go get it and his hitting has always been iffy
20. My first impression is that the Mets' MVP opt-out seems like something the biggest free agent on the market wouldn't agree to. But I kind of like the idea of Harper on the Mets. Separate of that I've convinced myself they need Pollock. I've become very skeptical of Lagares, with the injury and all.
21. Completely met my expectations of him when like most veteran emergency defense-first catchers, he got thrust into starting duty and iirc actually did okay for a very short period there before becoming exactly what his baseball card suggested he would, only worse, and earn his release. Then he shocked me by coming back to the Mets in September. What was that about.
22. Fun piece on the Met Jerrys. Fourteen roundtrippers wasn't nothin for a second baseman back in 67 and really something for a Met second baseman.
23. Young white and slow
24. Widowed taxi driver unwittingly takes a German journalist by cab into the Gwangju Uprising in South Korea in 1980. Deadly hijinx ensue. I was more ignorant of the details of this actual event than the titular cab driver, so consider me educated as much as entertained and horrified. The cab ride depicted also really happened but I think it takes dramatic licence from there. Starts off as a goofy comedy then descends into a heartbreaking action tragedy.
