  1. Went to the game. Glad to see Ramos producing a little. What the hell happened with Diaz? Let's run this down: Gsellman's pitching in the 8th, his second inning of work. With one out, he lets up a double to Harrison. This is a fast runner; we know this because it was a hustle double. He's the tying run, definitely in scoring position. Gsellman stays in against the righty Greiner. Gets a ground ball out. Harrison moves to third, but there are now two outs. Mickey then goes to Diaz. Ok, sure, we're going for a 4 put save. The Tigers are awful, it's their 8 hitter, Jacoby Jones is hitting well under .200, but ok, the closer comes in. Diaz lets up a single and the game is tied. He faces one more batter, strikes him out. 13 pitches total. Mets go down in order. Pitcher spot doesn't come up. Diaz is lifted and doesn't pitch the ninth. So if the plan was a four out save (which Mickey admitted was the plan) but the second he allows one hit, you pull him? This doesn't make sense. What bothers me isn't how it played out so much--which of course was dumb and counterproductive-- but how the whole thing was approached. Like everything with the Mets it's all a big show of solving last year's problems this year and it's almost never about solving today's problem today. https://www.northjersey.com/story/sports/mlb/mets/2019/03/02/new-york-mets-plan-use-edwin-diaz-ninth-inning-not-earlier/3029717002/Here's Mickey in March: "We didn't have Diaz last year. We didn't have a guy that did that. The way he went about his business last year and was probably the best closer in baseball, to take him out of that role would be tough. He knows he's got the ninth. He's going to go out there and pitch well in the ninth for us. He knows what to expect going in." Now here he is earlier this week: “[The eighth inning] hasn't been handled, so we have to adjust. I think the last two games, there could have been arguments where it would have been nice to be able to have Diaz come in and get an out in the eighth. It might have made it a little easier.” Why make yourself look like an idiot unless it was all about demonstrating how inadequate last year's team was? NOBODY CARES.
  2. What good did it do for Mickey to declare Diaz off limits for 4-out saves or say he'd never dare use a pitcher to pinch run. It's almost Wilponian how he's making a show of having changed his mind
  3. Don't get what Mickey's doing here. Takes out Diaz and Alonzo for Wilmer Font.

  5. I've probably told the story before of what a dick Billy Ripken was to me, and other people, when I came across him as a 23-year-old clueless reporter. I worked a small daily paper in Maryland, mostly writing about high-school sports but when the Orioles had day games we could call them up and get press passes so we'd divide the games between us. The first time I got the chance to go turned out to be a very humbling major league debut to say the least. I was very nervous and so resolved just to follow the other writers and just do what they did. They hung out on the field watching batting practice and so I did too. I kept score in the press box, but was positioned a few rows back. After the game (a 6-5 win for the Red Sox) the writers all rushed over the elevator (this was Memorial Stadium) so I got in too. When they walked out, I followed them. We were waiting outside a door and when it opened, we walked into the visitor's clubhouse. As it turned out I had followed the Boston writers and not the Baltimore ones. That was okay though. I figured I'd get a quote from the winners then catch up with the O's. I spoke briefly to Wade Boggs who gave me some bullshit cliche quotes. ("we take em one game at a time") and zero insight. Me and Wade were also wearing the same model sneakers (white Nikes with a spongy red tongue, he was putting his on while I tried talking to him) but he didn't find that interesting as an ice breaker. Whatever. I exited to go get my O's quotes but... I couldn't find the clubhouse. It was exactly like Spinal Tap, I was walking around the guts of the stadium for what seemed like a really long time, encountering the same deadends everywhere I turned etc. By the time I found it Frank Robinson's postgame chat with reporters was just ending and many players were already showered and packing out. The only player in the clubhouse I was recognized well was Billy Ripken, so I decided he would have to be my quote. While I was waiting to approach him Ripken was on the bench changing. The O's had a retarded guy who worked as a clubby, pushing around a laundry cart collecting dirty unis and jockstraps and towels from the room. I watched Billy Ripken take off each of his stinky white sanitaries and toss them each into the cart by banking them off the retarded guy's face. I finally approached him: "Billy do you have a minute?" "No." "Sorry?" "You asked me if I had a minute, and I said no." End of interview. I was so humiliated by the whole experience, getting lost, getting shit quotes and getting no home-team stuff, I would up doing something I never did before or since, which was "steal" a quote from Robinson appearing in the AP write up hoping no one would notice, and of course no one did since nobody ever read my game story. What I really should have done was ask about and write about the sweatsock incident.
  6. I associate the name "Aaron" with Henry, then maybe those guys. I think Sele was better than Laffey. Lasted a whole year without ever getting used! I barely remember Harang was a Met.
  7. As we were discussing in another thread the Phils DFAed him after he started the year 1-28 or something
  8. Geez what a crazy series. We may have just killed the Nats dead too.
  9. we were just talking about this guy

  11. Quality thread-titling though. I assume the Mets go blue-unis again today given their recent hot streak
  12. Yikes, Fraze is now No. 3 hitter. McNeil and Cano on the DL/IL Ryan O'Rouke up as is Guillorme
  13. Another match where I supported neither of the representing contendahs
