Frayed Knot wrote: The mainstream sports guys tend to get pissed when the flavor of the week players who are among the few that they actually know get passed over in favor of other guys who they haven't heard of but who just may happen to be, you know, good. Perfect example of a more career scoping version of this is Colin Cowherd's idiotic stance that Craig Biggio should not be in the Hall of Fame, while Jose Canseco should, simply because of...well...here is David Bowie... J-_30HA7rec The thing is though, this is an extreme case of R.A. Dickey last year, Hideo Nomo from his rookie season, Fernandomania in 1981, Fydrich in his rookie season, where the press gets galvanized over a perceived "transcending the game, and entering the cultural zeitgeist" of these athletes they cover. Almost trying to appear more important than they actually are (hey, we are covering things relevant to pop culture, not just frivolous entertainment). BTW, was half jokingly about to reply to your comment in the MFY thread about Jeter's return, that MFY ball lickers in the media and social media outlets were getting ready to bust out "after that game, Jeter should be named to the ASG!" Which, considering the media's fascination with Puig, might not be to absurd to consider...

So, contrary to what seems to be unanimous proclamations from the media, I guess not ALL baseball fans want nothing more than to see Yasiel Puig in the All-Star Game. Commence sports columnists demanding an end to fan voting..... I forget if it was Stark himself or one of the Mikes on ESPN Radio's morning show, but a suggestion was made about a new roster slot for "hottest phenom" of the season to give to guys who come up late and catch fire. Of course that will get promptly hijacked by fans of teams who have a veteran and multiple time All-Star return from a long stint on the DL (or suspended list), in June and is just red hot for the 6 weeks before the ASG.

Not to mention there are always players who are injured or backing out... Shouldn't have said anything...any MFYers selected through the back door methods are ON YOUR HEAD!

metsguyinmichigan wrote: Just two MFYs? With the game in New York? Verducci's head will explode. What are the odds that at least one of these Yankee hacks demands that Jeter be named to the team as an honorary captain or something "for the good of baseball." Don't jinx it, Robertson is one of the AL Final Player candidates.

I don't know that it was my idea. Grimm is the cardman. I don't think anyone here has thought to turn great non-Mets into Mets. I like that. If I made some a those I guess the first one Id pick is Brooks Robinson. Imagine if Brooks was on the Mets in 69-70. *slobberdribblesalavate* Hmmm...whom am I thinking of then? A guy here made a custom set of Met history cards based on the 1971 Topps design. -

Frayed Knot wrote: One of the original conditions that marked a trade as a 'WATP' was the inclusion of the phrase "and a couple of prospects" because, as in Mathews' proposal here, it essentially acknowledges that the major pieces of the trade aren't even close to equal and so you toss in some un-named and undefined 'prospect(s)' so as to give it the illusion of fairness. Not identifying the prospects also gives the inventor of the trade an out later on if a deal is made and the prospect turns out to be the real deal since he can always claim; "I didn't say to deal THAT guy!" I'd agree with you, except that is Wally's standard statement on any minor leaguer. The day the Benson and Zambrano deal happened he was gung ho on trading Kazmir because he "didn't know" Kazmir and Peterson but he "knew" Benson and Zambrano because they had major league experience.

The Ways and Means of Mets-LovingBig Shots 2013

Mick Jagger? Says Jay Horwitz on Twitter: Long time Mets fan Mick Jagger, who is in concert next to Citizens Bank Park, will stop by and watch BP before his first Stones set. Reads like another Boy Who Tweeted Wolf installment from Jay. I mean, c'mon...the Stones are still together in 2013? Not everyone can be The Beatles and just never get back (no pun intended) as a touring band since their last one-off on the roof of the Apple building in 1969! -

Not sure which "haters be hating" attitude I find more funny. When people say "SHUT UP AND STOP PAYING ATTENTION TO NEGATIVE AGENDA DRIVEN DRIVEL LIKE THIS, WE ARE NOT THAT BIG OF A NATIONAL EMBARRASSMENT" or fans of certain movies lambasting the profession of media movie critics to task because they dare to say anything negative about what they feel is the greatest achievement in cinematic history.

I know its piling on Edge, but this is still an aggregation thread. This is probably the most damming part of the piece though: You can't help but feel for David Wright, who is likely going to lead the Mets in just about every offensive category by the time his career is over. He already leads the franchise in hits, doubles, RBIs and runs, and he's third in homers and, sort of amazingly, fifth in stolen bases. And after the Mets signed him to a seven-year extension in the offseason, he's going to be on the team through 2020. It's tough to see how they're not going to be seven miserable years. His surrounding cast probably won't ever be this feeble again, but the Mets are farther away than they were two years ago. It's hard to even cheer for Wright; it feels like obligation, and it just requires too much energy. There's no energy to spare. It requires a ton of Mets fans' energy just to drag themselves out to the game. I love Mets fans, and I love this franchise. They have the best mascot, the best ballpark food and a general pluck in their fanbase's moroseness they try to hide but can't. The world of baseball is a better place when the Mets matter. This is not something that is fun to see. It's no wonder so many Mets fans are choosing not to. I'd be trying to escape to my happy place too.

A Cardinal fan notes on how badly the Mets have demoralized their fanbase!

Edgy MD wrote: It's "writing" a wrong? I fail to see how such a discreditable process is a gift to the fans. It's about advertisers getting their logos in front of fans. 1. It is when the webmaster is as bad at copy editing as the writer is on deadline... 2. Good point, but I wanted to note that, even with the commercialization, (IIRC, wasn't Gillette the sponsor even back when it returned in 1970?) it still promotes fan interaction.

Kinda ranted about this after a blogger ranted for anarchy by voting for Colin Cowgil http://mets360.com/?p=16577 First, it is unknown how many people in the general mass audience know about this, but in recent years MLB HAS been trying to resolve popularity contest issues by having the players vote as well. With the winners, or player runner-up getting selected if both votes are the same. It still can be seen as a popularity contest, but at least it is giving the peers a chance to vote as well. It also greatly reduces the chance for a manager to stack the bench and pitching staff (players vote for a good portion of starters and relievers) of his guys. Second, with the amount of various injuries that crop up, and whatnot, the chances of a player that truly deserves to be at the All-Star Game these days of not being selected in one form or another. Nor should it really be that big of a deal with whom starts, which is the reason for this campaign in the first place. Would it have been a nice feather in Wrights cap last year to be the starter? Sure, but it would be far more greater to see David Wright start his first postseason game since Game 7 of the 2006 NLCS! And finally, at the end of the day, its still fan interaction. No matter how obnoxious the voting campaigns online and in the stadium for Lucas Duda or Daniel Murphy might be, it still is part of baseballs effort to get fans involved. So, especially if younger fans are more and more involved in social media, then isnt something for them worth the odd wrong choice here and there. And generally, as in the Sandoval-Wright case, sometimes it is a case of writing a wrong that happened in an earlier case. Not to mention, it is one thing to rail against a flawed system and cause chaos for the sake of causing chaos, but rather than going for anarchy, why not suggest ways for it to be fixed, besides being done away with entirely.

Random Met collectable crap from the past
stevejrogers replied to stevejrogers's topic in New York Mets Talk
I think you had this question come up a few times in determining where to place certain cards that list a team different than the cap/uni the player is pictured on, SOOOO... It's about his final days as a Dodger and he is wearing Dodger gear in the photo, but the cover date is a few days after his trade from the Marlins to the Mets. Should this officially be considered a Met collectable? Or... Article is a feature on him, but not really about his season. And he was still a Met when the photo and article took place. BUT, the cover date is the same as when he was traded to the Blue Jays, and he is in civies. So should this be considered a Met collectable? -
Or Mets Junk In The Trunk 2013! Looking for Metly SI covers, and caught what looks to be Ron Hodges sitting on the bench in this 1978 SI cover: Oddly enough this type of situation happened two more times, with Ozzie Smith and later Matt Williams, but the Mets in the dugout are too blurred or blocked to make out who they are.

The owners can't be too happy about the curent team record. Later Except for when it affected the Mets with Wee Willie Small Balls, not sure which makes me more gleefull. Another over hyped former highly touted MFY player or coach failing, or one of Belichick's disciples (since they all brought Bill's attitude with them).

Quick first reactions: -Pretty decent biopic, worth seeing from an educational standpoint. Nothing someone who knows the basic story of what Robinson went through would object to in a "they got that wrong" way or new information "discovered." -Complete period piece, the rap song was just in the trailer. 1940s era score and some pretty good tunes mixed in. -Larry Doby, and others whom came after Robinson for teams other than Brooklyn do get short changed...A LOT! The only reference to the movement that was coming was just in passing general comments (both with racial undertones and winds of change promises). As well as Campanella (who is referenced in a scene of Branch selecting Robinson) and Newcombe being noted as being with the Dodgers in 1948 in a "what happens after" captions. -They tell Ed Charles' story of being inspired by Robinson in Florida of 1946 which is a nice tie-in to future events, even if the Dobys, Monte Irvins, Hank Thompsons, Pumpsie Greens, Ellie Howards and Sam Jethroes get nary a mention. -A couple of groan worthy moments. One, they get the Reese-Robinson on the field moment that is in statue form outside Keyspan Park, but What. The. Fuck? Reese opines that maybe someday everyone will be wearing #42. *sigh* Second groan worthy moment, they do have a montage of various JR Day games of various MLBers decked out in #42s (including the present day Dodgers), well the first player shown in the montage, Derek Fucking Jeter!? Good grief...Neither ruins the movie, or takes points away from it by any means, but stuff that can be considered groan worthy material.

I have no earthly idea why this bothers people as much as it seems to. Simple, Bonilla is viewed by the mainstream press, and mass audiences (Met fan or not) as a symbol of dumb Met moves (also see Mo Vaughn, Jim Fregosi, etc). If he had a more Carlos Beltran like Met career, or even Kevin McReynolds, this probably wouldn't be the source of much derision, mockery and consternation.
