General All Purpose Baseball Card Thread

I see these, which can work, maybe very well. Change that slant 86 record breaker to read 86 world series. Yeah, I think RB was what I was thinking of. -
General All Purpose Baseball Card Thread

We've been playing in the 1969 sand box a bit too much Z, lets see cards that never were for the 1986 postseason! I'd guess if Topps did a set it would be like the season highlights design in the 1987 base. -
Well, aspiring to that level of mediocrity pretty much has led to a lot of the Mets rather quagmire-esque seasons of false hopes and cock teases.

I can remember it still coming up in the happy days of Fonzie and the high-flying years of Robin every time a stray Lamb would wander to third. We're now talking fewer than three 3B per year over the lifetime of the franchise, which doesn't sound all that preposterous. It was the failure to maintain a regular third baseman for any sustained period of time that made it as bad as it sounded for so long. Once Hubie took over the position, I thought the callbacks to third base as a "perennial trouble spot" were overblown, but a legend is a legend. It's a way more fun legend when it's been rendered inactive. Going through the Met Media Guides, the "All-Time Met Third Basemen" filler was still going strong by 2002. In 2003 the "trivia nugget" was "The Last 25 Third Basemen" counting from 100 (Alfonzo) onward. Oddly BOTH show up in the 2004 guide, through 2006 and in 2007 just the All-Time third base roster is listed. And it's been in every guide since, including the 2013 one. So while it probably hasn't been a big deal by the media, or the Mets PR notes for games, it still gets its own notation in the Media Guide.

They have with their 7Line-esque T-Shirt giveaways. Stuff like this is always doomed to fail, which is why its probably better that the unlicensed companies like 7Line does it. They can handle the shirt slogans that end up getting mocked within a month, or getting behind players that end up not working out for whatever reason. But the teams themselves doing it opens them up to complete ridicule.

Vic Sage wrote: Didn't Cal Ripken do the same thing? Even when it was long past the time his 1-step range required him to move to 3b, he had his manager (his father, i think) penciling him in at SS anyway. Didn't he play everyday to break the record, even when days off probably would've improved his overall production? But Cal has been deified for the behavior you now condemn Jeter for. For accuracy's sake, Cal Sr. only managed Cal Jr. all of 1987, the first 6 games of 1988 and one game as an interim skipper in 1985. In the midst of Junior's prime seasons. Ripken would clash with manager Davey Johnson about moving over to third when Johnson took over in 1996. Ripken played all but six games at short in 1996 but by 1997 the move was permanent as Ripken played his final 3 games at shortstop that year. And the next season, with Ray Miller as the O's skipper, is when the streak finally ended, though Ripken was at the hot corner the entire way, on the final day of the season.

In hindsight, was Phillips right to not sign ARod?

Which gave Phillips/Wilpon the "24 and 1" out. Though tin-foil hat wearers would claim that it, Phillips falling on the sword so early when none of the original demands would eventually show up in Texas or The Bronx, was because the Wilpons wanted to keep the franchise value down for their eventual buyout of Doubleday's portion of the franchise. Tents or not, the "24 and 1" scenario happened in Texas. There was only one team where A-Rod could go and it not be a "24 and 1" scenario. And he's playing for them tonight. That is true, but the pro-signing and anti-Wilpon press delighted in reminding everyone what ended up not being the case, basically decrying the Mets as the world's worst poker players. -
Edgy MD wrote: It only distorts the record to call Fartinez a can't-miss prospect. Every last one of us knows there's no-such thing. That's fair, I was using the quotes based on the fact that he was touted as the Mets best prospects by the mainstream press, the Mets own PR folks (though I'd give more blame on the media for running way too hard on what the Mets give them) and Met system pom-pom wavers in community fandom outlets (no one here in particular though). But essentially the point was that he was someone that was touted and could have had value in a deadline, waiver wire, or offseason trade but ended up being an injury prone DFA'd washout for the organization.

A Boy Named Seo wrote: Based on nothing but my Don Zimmer-like intuition, I feel like Jordany's gonna get popped for PEDs one day. I think you're doing a better job than the cadre of Mets beat reporters who have continually cackled like Mean Girls about JV's cursing and tweeting and wearing the wrong shirt and standing at the plate too long but, despite their access and professional credentials, never indicated any inkling of the story right under their noses. Though that might be because Biogenesis and PEDs aren't a big topic in New York baseball these days. Not even a "one Met executive has speculated the scandal might touch the major league roster" out of them. It's wholly possible Valdespin sought his edge completely out of public view, and it's also wholly possible that nobody wanted to brush up against libel laws by hinting at anything that wasn't 100% solid, but it seems highly unlikely in an "industry" in which everything gets gossiped about and everything gets leaked that nobody on the other side of the clubhouse door couldn't have/wouldn't have noticed something...unless they weren't particularly trying to find out. Yeah, no its better to speculate on the past, or at least those currently in the game whom one suspects based on being prominent during the said past (i.e. waste some time on a radio talk show redoing MVP awards to the point where Craig Biggio pretty much is a multiple time NL MVP winner) and to be the ultimate arbiters come HOF election time based on the anonymity of the balloting and saying that anything else is none of the public's business!

"The Most Cynical Ballpark in the Major Leagues"

Ceetar wrote: How about the Dunkin Donuts cup they put up the last couple of years though? How freaking AWESOME was that? I first heard about it on another forum where the poster was talking about things new at Shea that year as he had gone to Opening Day. At first I thought he was saying that a cup had landed in the bullpen early in the day and no one had bothered to come and remove it for the whole game! And, yeah...no it was quite tacky, quite minor league actually. Yeah there is the Apple, but the Apple has never, in any incarnation, well Shea's Apple was sporting the ASG logo this week, SOLD anything. Not on the Apple, not on the hat, no where. So it may be a tacky thing you'd see in a minor league ballpark, it isn't shilling some sponsor's product. And the problem isn't just the sensory overload and the disgusting mis-mash of ad space (the less said about the bullpen tarp ad debacle, the better, its they've been getting so many different advertisers, that some have turned out not to be the most stable choices (Spongtech for example), and that's not even bringing Amway into the conversation! It makes the team look cheap, low rent and willing to grab anyone who actually offers to buy ad space in the stadium. -

I'd be shocked to find ANYONE holding #7 in such reverence after Kranepool left! Still kind of shocked that there are those clamoring that the Mets throw it on the wall in Kranepool's honor actually. -

Yeah, you are doing a bit too much over thinking with this there Cee. Yes Beltran belongs on the top of a conversation among the best offensive Mets of all time, but there are a ton of factors why he isn't as beloved among Met fans. This conversation probably is better off being had when he finally hangs it up. As far as keeping #15 out of circulation? Same thing, I think fans would be all "FOR HIM, REALLY!?" Doesn't have the same reverence yet that Jose Reyes would have. Fans complained for years about the hot potato-ing of #18 and #16, and even Keith himself has opined about the lackluster assignments #17 has received since he last played for the team. For whatever reason, Beltran never reached that level of importance by fans to be annoyed at the flotsam and jetsam that have worn the uniform number since Beltran left. FWIW, its a shame Reyes is on the shelf, THAT would have been an interesting crowd reaction to gauge. -
Of course its the 81st home game of the season, but at least its getting done... Now about 31 being retired... http://metsblog.com/metsblog/mike-piazza-to-be-inducted-into-mets-hall-of-fame/

Frayed Knot wrote: "Puig ... who joined the Los Angeles Dodgers in early June and turned in one the greatest single months any player has done over the last 140 years." No, he's had one of the greatest debut months over the last 100+ years. A very nice accomplishment indeed and a great month even for someone NOT new to the league, but overall it's a very different category than saying it's one of the great months of any kind ever. It's that kind of fact-twisting (intentional or otherwise) and lack of perspective that makes for a poor soap-box on which to lecture his audience on what is or isn't the best thing for baseball. Oddly enough, this kind of proves my point towards a veteran playing his first game of the season in June for whatever reason (injury, suspension, hell even an inter-league trade after May 31st, or something akin to Tim Raines' 1987) and just playing out of this world his first month back. There would be precedence using the logic Levine puts forth for fans of that team/player and media members, both national and local to demand that he be at the All-Star Game, especially if its a guy that is a long standing star using the "how can you have the game without HIM!?" argument.
