  1. Willets Point wrote:Steve, that's an excellent book I read earlier this year.Cool. I was born that exact year so the 70's really WERE a blur to me (no mind altering drugs neccessary!) I love reading up on past times thoughBaseball wise though, you can't beat the 50's in NYC. 47-64 a New York team was represented in all but 2 of the World Series (yes I'm aware the 1959 Dodgers won the World Series, but very much in LA) I mean 1999-2000 and this coming October probably couldn't come close to matching the addreneuline that time had. But then again, maybe I am falling prey to the nostalga waxers. No internet, no TALK radio let alone sports radio, TV station program directors wondered if the games could just STOP right at the time for the next show on the schedule so clearly no sports dominated TV, so maybe there is more now...ANYWAY, the tectonic plates that were shifting both politically and culturely at that moment (late 1970's) is quite facinating.
  2. Yup. I'd rather have Asshead Clemens than Wells Clemens will at least do something nutty if he doesn't have it, and stay in the game. Wells is liable to quit right there in mid game!
  3. Entertaining read about New York City in 1977. A very pivitol year in the city's history.Sadly, no mention (well so far) of an event that happened on 6/15 but then again, that ship, much like NYC itself, was allready long since sunkSo clearly Reggie v Billy and that championship ride are covered heavily (the project actually started out as a baseball book, but grew once Mahler realized how much other interesting things were going on that year)Also a pivitol mayorial race, blackouts, urban decay (title comes from Howard Cosell's comment about seeing fires go up from an overhead blimp shot during the World Series that year) the Son of Sam case was that summer (Spike Lee even made a film called "Summer of Sam" as well as Murdoch's taking over the Post are the main storylines of the bookGood read for those who love NYC's history.
  4. Bravos lose as well to the Giants Guess Benitez doesn't wet the bed completely everytime he sees the Braves unis in Atlanta!
  5. Yancy Street Gang wrote: Okay, now let's do ticket office managers! Bob Mandt, William Inanncillo(major SP, I believe he's still the Ticket office VP)...
  6. Johnny Dickshot wrote: cpf = the only place on the whole interweb to find a flow chart of Met assistant trainers. Assistant Trainers aren't that hard to research though, they usually get listed on the roster page. Its digging deep into medical staff pages of Yearbooks & Media Guides for all the Internists and such that is, well, interesting!

  8. The Doctor Is In!
  9. By virtue of the Mets beating the Rockies last night, and MFY beating the Tigers this afternoon, the Mets are the best team, percentage wise, in MLB! Mets 81-49 .623 Tigers 82-50 .621 Also, and this was a mere formality at this point, the Mets go back-to-back .500 or greater seasons since 2000-2001 (course that was the back end of a 5 year run) Course it means squat in the grand scheme of things as the AL will have home field (though due to the 1994 strike upseting the odd-even year run, the AL would have been home field anyway) and in recent years it hasn't proved to be the eventual World Champs But for this moment, the Mets have the best record in all of baseball
  10. Ricky Ledee Michael Tucker Its No Hat but it is a profile of Ledee
  11. Got a good shot of the only Met player who played when this EXACT uni was being worn at Shea (by the 3B coach unfortunatly)
  12. Hence why the MFY have never saw fit to afix a C to any of their captain's jerseys! Despite the cottage industry it could create considering Yankee Captains usually are the most popular players (Jeter, Mattingly, Munson) This isn't the NHL where its traditional and perfunctionary to have Cs and As (which is how John Franco got his C from, Turk Wendell saw a hockey game and thought it was cool) Wonder if the Mets and Mex were the first to do such a designation?
  13. Centerfield wrote: That database would require constant updating as "True Yankee" status can be fleeting. For instance, when Giambi hit that grand slam in the 13th inning his first year with the Yanks, it was the moment he became a True Yankee. But he lost TY status when he lost 200 lbs and hit .150. But now that he has 36 HR's, he is a TY again. Shit like this can be hard to keep track of. No wonder the MFY fanbase is so sophisticated. Heh! How about all the times the Yankee PR machines (YES, WCBS and 1050ESPN Radio) declare that "THIS is the moment it turns for ARod and he is now a beloved Yankee in this town" Last done for the walkoff grand slam against the Braves
  14. Yeah, how'd you like to be the Yanqui fans who proclaimed that the Pavano signing would turn out better than the Pedro signing! Or that the Yanks should have gone after Pavano, not Pedro
  15. Times like this remind me of one of the dumbest radio ads I've heard in a long while. For a Sprint PCS apperance last year by a MFY player, but the ad couldn't use "Yankees" by name, so it became "An apperance by a player on YOUR favorite New York baseball team..." certaintly seems that way with all the Yankee gear being worn, anyway, that didn't bother me really, this part did "Baseball Great, Carl Pavano!" That had me laughing. Not "All Star, Carl Pavano" not "World Champion, Carl Pavano" but "Baseball Great" I mean can you give me a TRUTHFULL come on? Who was the intern that wrote that copy? "Gee, he's a Yankee, he must be GRRRR-EAT!" Hopeless, HOPELESS personel!
  16. Never mind, wrong state...
  17. Well if you want to get TECHNICAL about it! I mean, yeah people do use Ruth's pitching as an intangible reason to call him the greatest player of all time, and if you project his stats he'd probably would have gone down among the all-time great leftys But he is in the Hall because of his hitting, specifically the HRs Cobb? One of the greatest hitters to ever suit up Wagner? Still to this day (thanks to a weenie aquiesing to a lesser "captain" ) the greatest SS of all time
  18. Yancy Street Gang wrote: Don't you have a TV at home? Anyway, it's 26 minutes to game time for the makeup game. How's the weather in Queens today? Yea, but I needed to do some things at the office, and I'm still living rent and mortgage free Yup, still living with the arentspay!
  19. Though I do shudder when I realize that Tim Leary was one of the last on Rube's watch. Can't have all good exits I guess =
  20. Rube Walker status has been achived by The Big Train, Edgy in DC! See Tug, Tom, Jon and Jerry are represented around Rube in your avatar. Though men like Nolan Ryan, Dan Frisella, Craig Swan and Bob Apodaca weren't too shabby back in the day. What is it with you and pitching anyway? = Oh and after reading that page on Rain Delay Central, The Big Train wasn't a patch on the FANNY of The Big Six! = SC = 1936 (Year both Walter and Christy became the first pitchers in Cooperstown)
  21. Still stuck on you I wonder if we can get something situated in that parking lot, kind of like that Bat at MFY, or a Foul Pole sized light stand (or maybe the indicator for airplanes) that reaches all the way up to that EXACT DAMN spot where that marker is in the Upper Deck, Left Field side! Probably not huh =
  22. Willets Point wrote: The bright side of life. Today at game time = Willets Point in charge of walking tours in Boston far from tv's or radios where he can follow the Mets game. Tomorrow at game time = Willets Point at work where he can listen to the game while working on his librarian projects. I'm probably the only one, but this works out well for me. Well I went to my cubicle today expecting to listen to the ballgame free of any and ALL annoyances Monday I will be listening to the ballgame in my cubicle with the various interuptions that come with my work day...
  23. Actually from the looks of it, Rain Delay Central and Leap Toad haven't changed much since Yancy picked up and left in 2002!
  24. A little Rain Delay Theatre featuring Christy Mathewson, from the former home of Ultimate Mets Database
