  1. Here is a little Willie Nelson for ya to make it official! Turn out the lights The party's over They say that All good things must end Call it tonight The party's over And tomorrow starts The same old thing again But the crazy crazy party Never seen so many people Laughing dancing Look at you you're having fun But look at me I'm almost cryin' That don't keep her love from dyin' Misery cause for me the party's over Turn out the lights... Once I had a love undyin' I didn't keep it but I tried Life for me was just one party And then another I broke her heart so many times I had to have my parting wife I had to have my party Why broke her heart so many times But one day she said Sweetheart the party's over Turn out the lights...

  3. Good point, speaking of Billy Martin, looks like Willie failed to inherit the passionate fire from one of his managing idols. But I think at this point in his career, if Willie does anything it would be percieved as ringing false

Edgy DC wrote: ="SteveJRogers"]Bobby is the Mets Billy Martin, well the 75-78 Martin, the guy that is brought in based on success elsewhere and he comes in rocking the boat and transforming a lumbering bunch to a winning bunch. But because of his own insecurities self destructs (on the field in Valentine's case) and needs to be removed for the good of all involved. And I will say Billy Martin does deserve to be in the Hall as a Manager. Bobby V needs some more MLB gigs I missed the part where Bobby Valentine self-destructed. On the field, not in a Martin-esque way, just as in commanding a team that fell apart in 2002. Yeah self-destruction is an gross overstatement, but I was going for a Bobby V=Billy Martin side-by-side comparision. Also the guy was paranoid and yet constantly did his own bit of saber rattling through the press

Frayed Knot wrote: A good way to see the pre-adorned Shea is to check out the flick 'Bang the Drum Slowly' Much of that movie was filmed there circa 1972: green plywood walls, no apple/hat, no picnic area, etc. Good one! BTW, to the point MM made, a better example actually would be the banners that adorn the walkways and entrance ways of famous moments and Mets (and in the Mezz and Loge walkways you'll see banners depicting members of the All Amazin' Team from 2002). Since those are rarely, if ever shown on film or are captured in photographs, it would be easy to assume that the Mets always had them there, when in fact they started appearing IIRC sometime in the early 1990's

It's not something to make a big deal about, but to put Willie on instead of Bobby has to make some people wonder. It could be a harmless mistake by some jack wad, or it might be advertising the current product and dismissing someone they let go as a no one. Yup. Especially when their ad campaign has been how they are going to be the FOX News of New York Sports (as in the "Fair And Balanced" tag line) and this is one way where you can start making a case that they are just the same as everyonelse. (The love of Steve Traschel by the on air staff, showing only Met winning games in their Met Classics, ect)
  9. metirish wrote: How could Bobby not be an option, jesus christ what a lame poll. Yup. Guy took a team with holes all over the outfield and in the back of the rotation and made the postseason back-to-back years, and an NL Championship! What are they only counting Division winners? Is Bobby V persona non grata now? Sheesh!
  10. Willie REALLY was one of the options? Gil, Davey, Bobby V... Who else was an option? You know, I'd probably put Torre up there Casey I'd actually say was overated, even as a MFY manager (great innovater, but doesn't have the lineage of say John McGraw and others)! I'd put Yogi also in the top 5 as well
  11. ="metsmarathon"]i'll bet its something those of us who were threewhen it was installed didnt know either. Good point as well. But I'm generallizing that young Met fans have been exposed to various images (films, pictures, baseball cards) depicting an Apple-less backdrop in Right-Center from 64-79 Of course it might not be in someone's nature to have it ingrained in their memory that Shea's outfield fence was green and the scoreboard back then was noticeably different
  12. Johnny Dickshot wrote: It was part of the 1980 "Magic is Back" campaign and originally said Mets Magic on it. I guess it debuted in 1980 tho I don't know whether it was opening day. Wow, I bet you there is a misconception amongst those who no nothing about the Mets that it's been there since Shea was built. So it came in with the changeover from green to blue and going straight blue from the panels outside Shea. Cool. I might just check my 81-82 Met publications for some neat pics of it
  13. Wrong thread, OOPS!

  17. BTW, first time since 1973 that the Mets will have home field in the NLCS, obviously first time the Mets shall ever have home field in the NLDS! 69-93 both NLCS and ALCS had the same alternating crap that the World Series still had up to 2002, that was re-set when instead of a 5 game 2-3 series it turned into a 7 game 2-3-2 series in 1985, both 1969 and 1985 kicked off with the NL East having home field. Since 1995, all DS and LCS series have followed the best record (divison winner wise) formats
  18. Should be noted that after most of the summer blitzing the rest of the league, the Tigers have been surpassed by the Yankees for best record in the AL, by the Mets for best record overall, and only the Dodgers have a higher magic number to clinch their respective division! BTW, Miami is getting hit for not showing up despite being in the thick of the Wild Card hunt, well, part of that has to do with their 72-71 record! Much like the Mets of recent vintage, you really want to put all your faith in a middle of the pack team, in the midst of a scrum for best of also rans. Or a race to see who will be picked off in the first round The AL Wild Card, as stated eariler is a much more compelling race, partly because the AL Central is also in play in the same race, and the records of all involved are not hovering around .500
  19. Its like we are playing as if we already clinched!
  20. And he was Tom Seaver's Nemesis
  21. Posting some nifty facts about Statehood dates in the Stuff You Didn't Know Thread over in NBF...
  22. I wonder if there was a rime and reason for the order of State Hood among the 13? Either that or just plain whomever got their paperwork done first I guess. Ehem... Georgia, Georgia, the whole day through Just an old sweet song keeps Georgia on my mind. Georgia, Georgia, a song of you Comes as sweet and clear as moonlight through the pines. Other arms reach out to me Other eyes smile tenderly Still in peaceful dreams I see The road leads back to you. Georgia, Georgia, no peace I find Just an old sweet song keeps Georgia on my mind. Melodies bring memories That linger in my heart Make me think of Georgia Why did we ever part? Some sweet day when blossoms fall And all the world's a song I'll go back to Georgia 'Cause that's where I belong.
