  3. Hey Houston made it 4-3 in the fourth!
  4. Okay we are in the pen though, down by two. Aaron, lets keep it at 5

  10. There has been WAYYYYYYYY too much clinching talk today, so I give you this nice piece that was said by both a Met fan and surprisingly a Yankee fan! ]". . . we won. We don't have to pander," Sam tells them. "Please don't say that. . . ." Toby says from the other end of the room. "I'm not kidding. . . . We haven't won anything yet." "The speech is done," C.J says. "Two speeches are done," Toby tells her. "What's the second?" "I've got a speech if he wins. I've got a speech if he doesn't." "You wrote a concession?" Sam asks him. "Of course I wrote a concession. You want to tempt the wrath of whatever from high atop the thing?" "No." "Then go outside, turn around three times, and spit. What the hell is the matter with you?" "It's like 25 degrees outside. . . ." Sam sits down not taking any of this seriously. Then Josh joined the meeting and he tells him that Toby "wrote a concession speech." "Of course, he wrote a concession speech. Why wouldn't he? What possible reason would he have for not to writing a concession speech?" "The wrath from high atop the thing." "He up and said we were gonna ---" "No, you have to go outside turn around three times and curse." "Spit." "Spit and curse." "Do everything. Go!" "Go!" Getting it from both sides now, Sam gets up and flees to the freezing outdoors. When he gets back, C.J. tells him, "You can't be too careful." "I think you can," Sam mumbles.
  11. Oh right. Guess I'm getting too caught up in looking ahead to late October...
  12. I'd be surprised if we care much about the OoTS the rest of the way Even if a Triple Happiness is at hand
  13. Rotblatt wrote: Watching the national crew during the playoffs instead of Gary, Mex & Ron is going to fucking blow chunks. Whatever schlubs they trot out there aren't going to be nearly as knowledgable as our boys, and I doubt they'll be half as entertaining either. Sigh. I suppose there are worse problems to have, though. Funny example of parachuting during the 1999 NLDS. Chris Berman talking about Timo Perez as a "hot prospect" from the minors!
  14. I love a good "Then to Now" promo and certaintly the SNY McGraw-Orosco-Wagner one is fun, but a few things need to be said: 1) Tug would not inherit the "THE GUY" label untill 1971-1972. Ron Taylor was the main guy out of the committee they had in 1969, and even then the role of a closer was still nebulous as the Save Rule had JUST been created that year 2) This goes along with KC's point in an IGT a few days ago about Bobby Valentine's ommission in a Best Manager All Time poll, but the curious ommission of Franco/Benitiez (and even current Brave pitching coach Roger McDowell) does smack of a "clue" for conspiracy theorists looking for SNY's pro-current Met personel and those who still have good relations with the Mets bias. Course they were going for guys on World Championship winning teams, but still, no Roger? Hmmmm

  16. September 15-17 @ PIT GYC September 18-21 vs. FLA The Big O September 22-25 vs. WSH valadius September 26-28 @ ATL Centerfield September 29-October 1 @ WSH KC GAAAARRRGGH GYC, I'd like to know more about the Pirates so we are fully informed when we clinch this weekend!
  17. Met game starts at 7:05, the Phillies game at Houston starts at 8 EST So chances are good that the Mets will be wrapping up before the Phils do
  18. Yancy Street Gang wrote: No need for that. The magic number is one. I now want the Phillies to win on Friday so that the Mets can clinch at the moment of victory. Or just for the game to last longer Not too many depressing things (sports wise of course) than knowing you have been eliminated while still playing a game. For some reason I'm vividly recalling watching the Mets look down after it was announced at Shea that the Pirates had clinched the 1990 NL East.
  19. BTW, to further that point, you can make the case that the voting is probably done much like an All Star Game ballot. David Ortiz is listed as a Red Sox INF, so Palmeriod must have been listed as a Ranger INF and voters must have said "Hmmm, I don't remember him playing 1B against us, well he must have played more than a few games at 1st" There is no listing for DH's on official team rosters and generally they are ex-OFers and ex-corner INFers. Of course MLB WANTED Ortiz to have a shot of being in the ASG as a starter but thats another story, but the bottom line is that Ortiz, the 2006 AL starting 1Bman played a total of 10 games at First (probably all road interleague games) at first this season
  20. Good point, alot of GG and SS are based on rep (Ratty Palmeriod's one at first despite majority of year as DH aside) alone, not everyday seeing Player A and understanding exactly what Player A does that makes him a great defender Pudge (and by extention Benito Santiago who got too much press for being a great thrower out of runners) is another example. The throwing runners out thing gets way over blown, though it was usually in relation to Piazza's troubles, but that percentage seems to be the only way a catcher's defensive skills are judged by media and coaches
