  2. http://www.nypost.com/seven/03112007/sports/mets/amazins_offered_jose_to_tribe_for_alomar_mets_joel_sherman.htm According to Joel Sherman ] March 11, 2007 -- If you think the Roberto Alomar trade was a disaster for the Mets, you should know it could have been worse. Far, far worse. An official who was involved in the discussions that led to that Dec. 11, 2001 deal said that one of the players the Mets made available to Cleveland was a Low-A shortstop named Jose Reyes. The official said the Indians liked Reyes, but simply did not have enough information from their South Atlantic League scouts to make an 18-year-old with just two pro seasons the key player in the deal rather than Alex Escobar. Heh, I wonder how that would have ranked among "Worse Trades In Met History" Though some would say trades that actually happened were worse, Kazmir for Zambrano for instance! At least this would have been someone who wasn't yet a stud for someone who still was considered a top tier ballplayer at the time of the trade as opposed to the crown jewel of the system for damaged and mediocre goods.
  3. SNR is in New York at 620AM though clearly never made any inroads against WFAN and never had the punch that 1050 has. They used to have the Islander radio package before it went to 1050 and I think they also had Liberty WNBA games on. About the only salvo they ever fired across WFAN's bow, well if you can call it that, is that Bobby Valentine actually spurred WFAN for about a season IIRC and did his weekly report on WSNR 620 and not WFAN.

  6. Heh, Carl Erskine repeated this "fact" yesterday with Chris Russo on WFAN. I didn't hear the interview or rest of the show, but I highly doubt it was corrected on the show. Whats that line from The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance? "When the legend becomes fact, print the legend."

  8. Now here is my question. How long will it take before someone takes that card, cut signatures of Mantle, GWB and Jeter (or somehow get Jeter and Dubbya to sign it) and puts THAT on eBay and for how much!
  9. I'm sure you'll get a few suckers even after the market bottoms out. My dad actually bought this Ryan card that was marked up (not an insane markup, maybe a few bucks more than it was worth) because the dealer said it was a "rare oddity" with Ryan throwing a football.
  10. Gary Matthews Jr. under investigation Story was picked up by Rotoworld.com in their player news section: ]An Orlando pharmacy being investigated in connection with steroids was raided Tuesday, and it was discovered that one of the alleged clients of the pharmacy was Gary Matthews Jr. The Albany Times Union learned that investigators have uncovered evidence that testosterone and other performance-enhancing drugs may have been fraudulently prescribed over the Internet to current and former MLB and NFL players, as well as collegiate athletes. Also on the list of clients were admitted steroid user Jose Canseco and boxer Evander Holyfield. No other active major leaguers had their names leaked in the article.
  11. ="Frayed Knot"]So am I actually. But things like this are usually spun as (and this is exactly how I heard it); the committee failed to elect anyone ... as if a 'No' vote is, by definition, the same as no action at all. Hey at least it beats the cronism, the "Old Tales"ism (Glory of Their Times era players, Tinkers to Evers To Chance and other pre-1920's standouts who got in based more on word-of-mouth rather than actual study of stats and research) and other strange ways the old Veterans Committees used to use to get lesser players elected
  12. HA HA HA YOU ARE CORRECT SIR!
  13. Signed a NRI deal a few days before Pitchers & Catchers reported. Basically to be used ala DiFelice/Stinnett/Marreo Probably won't beat out Castro for the backup job, but will be serviciable down in Naw'leans
  14. The problem with Jeter is the same problem with alot of these fan voted Anniversary things. Who ever is running these things want to honor "legendary players" no matter if they really do deserve to be on the ballot. Omar Vizquel was cleaning up the SS Gold Gloves in the AL while the Troika (Nomar, ARod, Jeter) were getting all the press in the late 1990's but will many people vote for him? Other than "true" baseball fans and Cleveland fans, Seattle fans of the pre-ARod years and current Giant fans, hardly anyone would know Omar Vizquel from Omar Minaya Interesting, looking at the lists, doesn't seem like there are too many "bad jobs" though. SS GGs have been the weak spot in terms of big names on the winner list, so there you go with Jeter's name being on there.
  15. To be fair though, in their media guides they do make the distinction of attendance records for remolded Yankee Stadium and list Firsts and Lasts for "Old Yankee Stadium"
  16. metirish wrote: Well young Ambiorix Burgos might as well quit right now,Russo and Francesa have declared him useless, why?,because the Royals GM came form Atlanta so he must know pitching..that's why... Yeah, like they didn't know Mike Hampton and Tim Hudson were damaged goods!
  17. Uncoincidentally enough, around that time the Yankees continued to commemorate the anniversaries of the "venerable old" ballpark with the 70th anniversary and a big 75th anniversary bash in 1998 that actually included a nifty 360 panoramic spin through the years video where a black and white of Yankee Stadium circa the 20's morphed into the Yankee Stadium circa the 90's.
  18. I'll take the AL for the All Star Game, and I volunter to take the Giants. Heh, this is like the NFL schedule where the division winners get the other division winners!
  19. The Klingons have a proverb. Revenge is a dish best served COLD! And it shall be a cold day in Saint Louie the day the Cards receive their championship rings!
  20. Johnny Dickshot wrote: I was kinda working on the theory that the spread of the "dump" virus was an inside job, expressed as Shea's physical inferiorities when compared to newer stadiums, while actually stemming from its financial ones from ownership's perspective. That's right. Jay Horwitz told you Shea was a dump. Well that defeats my "Flushing area" argument since even that domed contraption was to be built in Shea's parking lot. When also did the fact that Shea actually resides on the top of an old landfill actually become common (aside from buffs of how Queens was prior to the 1960's), because I do hear that mantra every now and then.
  21. I think the overall surrounding areas also has something to do with it, the Chop City right across the street, nothing but Robert Moses' damned highways all round, ect. I think just the fact that non-Met fans love to make fun of the fact that Shea resides in a place called "Flushing" also adds to the general perception.
  22. Yancy Street Gang wrote: Here's how I think it should be done: Wait until after the season ends. Stay up until 2 a.m. writing a complete history of the opponent, dating back to its earliest beginnings. Sit back and wait for the applause. If it doesn't come, freak out! HAHAHA! Nicely played =
  23. So Todd Pratt and Robin Ventura are now dead to you as well? Despite their contributions to the 99-00 Mets? I say this because like I said, Yankee fans would rather not remember Stinnett as a Yankee, so you are holding a horrid 37 games against a former Met? The guy put in more service with the Diamondbacks than anyother team so I'm going to counter that and say I remember him as a being a Diamondback, hell he's even an original Diamondack! Thats 'nuff said
  24. Gwreck wrote: ="SteveJRogers"]Great article G, but this is the former MLBers thread: This is the Continuing Careers Of Ex-Mets thread Thanks for your concern. 25. Maybe its just that I never really paid much attention to the first weeks of ST like I'm doing now seeing images on the boards, but is it me or has there been more variety in terms of team gear the last few years? Already in this thread we have 1 hooded sweatshirt, 1 of those hiddeous body armour long sleeve ts, 1 black t, 1 black cut-off t, 1 white T which looks like it may be a personalized one for #16 Paul Lo Duca 1 windbreaker, 2 different shorts At least Aaron and El Duque don't have any logos on their shirts in that running pic, Wright's locker appears to be filled with the standard issue ST unis I'm not quite sure what it says, and frankly not sure if I really should be caring, but its just an observation that seems like there is alot more different variations of the products being used these days than I can recall.
