AH, COME ON, FRAYED! Brian Schneider is TERRIBLE. (awkward silence) He's a TERRIBLE player, and the Mets are better off without him. TERRIBLE! Say something funny, Mike! Frayed Knot May 12 2009 01:56 PM Not who I was talking about MD but always good to hear from you anyway. And the thing about Schneider is that, yes, he's been a disappointment, both in his the fact that he doesn't give the impression of being the top-notch defensive fielder we were led to believe and in his inability to stay on the field. Anyone who thought coming in that he was going to be a dynamite hitter has only himself to blame. But, to a large extent, Met fans have been spoiled over the last few decades by having the likes of Carter, then Hundley, then Piazza behind the dish (and also fooled by Posada across town). Many of them need to be reminded of the dirty little secret that reads: [u:1fn9o8fu]most catchers don't hit much[/u:1fn9o8fu]. Schneider's offense (particularly if you throw out last season's first half - he was much better in the 2nd) is much closer to the norm than a lot of fans seem to think. You want to find an upgrade for next season or even this it's fine with me -- just don't expect to find one under every rock. Frayed Knot May 14 2009 10:51 AM More catcher news - from Adam Rubin's blog, NYDN: Catcher Javier Valentin, Jose's brother, has signed with the Mets and will report to Triple-A Buffalo, replacing Rafael Arroyo on the Bisons' roster. Valentin, 33, has appeared in 631 major-league games from 1997-2008, with a combined .251 average, 45 homers and 210 RBI in 1,507 at-bats. He spent spring training with the Nationals but declared himself a free agent when Washington asked him to go to the minors. Omir Santos starting C & ROY Candidate?

="Nymr83"]] Brian Schneider (right calf) was scratched from his extended spring training game Monday, and Omar Minaya said there was no timetable for when Schneider would begin playing Well, that makes the offseason decision with him even easier. So long! -
="Frayed Knot":165r0yzz]1) Those claiming to [u:165r0yzz]know[/u:165r0yzz] that Lowe would have been a good sign need to be sure to tell us all about how they are calling this one in their favor approx 1/20th of the way through a deal that takes the pitcher until just before birthday #40 while, at the same time, I'm sure were all over the Glavine deal being a mistake despite coming at a similar age & money only with 1 fewer year guaranteed and a better career up to that point.[/quote:165r0yzz] There is also a difference in the quailty of the team at the point of the Glavine signing and last winter. A Lowe/Glavine of 2003 is good for a team that has some semblance of a direction. The Mets in 2003 didn't know WHAT the hell they were doing. Vaughn, Alomar, Cedeno, Burnitz? The team that Glavine came on board was a complete and utter disaster of a roster, and not a team that had any sort of postseason aspirations. This team could use a veteran alongside Santana in the rotation, rather than Johan, a young question mark in Pelfrey, a can he stay healthy question mark in Maine, a mental case in Perez and "Proven Crap" as the fifth starter. You'd really have to be crazy not to think that Santana/Lowe/Maine/Pelfrey/Proven Crap wouldn't be a better alternative now, or even back in the winter. Edgy DC May 12 2009 09:39 AM I think it's a little too much to ask of a team to judge a deal as "good, if we had a sense of direction." LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr May 12 2009 10:58 AM ="metsmarathon"]well, as others have said, i don't think it would've been smart to overpay as much for lowe as the braves did, nor do i think it was smart to pay ollie as much as we did. unfortunately, the other starting pitching options that were out there were all pretty darned bad, and outside the top three of sabathia, burnett, and lowe, i don't think there's anybody who would be appreciably (or predictably) helping the team. but we'd prolly be better off with one of them instead of with a potentially useless and grossly overpaid ollie... Really, when you're talking about any multiyear pitcher signing, it's not a matter of choosing the best option, but rather the least-bad. Framing it that way, what's the least-worse option: overpaying for something that's been consistently good and figures to age decently well, or paying a substantial amount-- if a significantly lesser one-- for just one fewer year of commitment, for a product that not only may, but is likely to explode on you? LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr May 12 2009 11:11 AM ="Willets Point":1siq3mhh]Of course the best deal not made was when the Mets didn't trade Glavine for Lowe back in 2005.[/quote:1siq3mhh] Flerg? Same here, but to clarify, there was a win September 7, but there was also a loss. First exit from Flushing Meadow with unadulterated good vibes in 9-1/2 months. Also found Shea's bases marked in the parking lot, along with the "pitching plate," which I think is a pitching rubber, but well, either way there used to be a ballpark right there. Lots of clusters of folks taking pictures at each stop. Still needs chalking. According to the rules and regulations and whatnot, that apparantly is the actual technical term for the area that the pitcher throws from. Mound and rubber being "unofficial" terms substituted through the years. -

An attitude that's become more pervasive worldwide as the values held by US companies become imposed elsewhere through the internet (not through any fault of the US' - why should the New York Times have to worry about Irish libel laws really). That's an odd statement. US libel laws are far less restrictive than those in places like the UK, for instance. ]The right to say whatever you like about someone seems to be wrapped up in a Freedom of Speech banner and I don't know that that's actually fair. Let's go over a few misconceptions: Libel is not a free speech issue. You can't avoid libel by claiming free speech. Libel is defined as a false statement of fact. It is not libel to say someone looks like a steroid user; that's your opinion, not a fact. It is libel to claim someone took steroids unless you have evidence to back it up. Since most of the posts on a message board are usually opinion, libel isn't in play. Public figures have a higher standard for proving libel than the general public. Someone can libel you and you can win by proving they were making false statements. For a public figure (an that would probably include ballplayers), the person claiming libel not only must show the false statement, but must also prove that the person publishing them knew that they were false and published them anyway. The truth is pretty much an iron clad defense against libel. Angel Pagan, for instance, can't sue newspapers for reporting about his arrest yesterday. Suits are often brought for defamation and called libel. There is a difference. These are often nuisance suits -- it's hard to prove actual defamation without libel, but it does force the defendant to hire a lawyer. Making a threat is not libel, and it is not usually allowed under free speech. A bulletin board has no special privileges when it comes to libel. However, since posts are usually clearly opinion, they will generally be in the clear (though they would have to pay legal costs in a suit). Nymr83 May 08 2009 10:00 AM ]That's an odd statement. US libel laws are far less restrictive than those in places like the UK, for instance. restrictive to who? in the U.S. the laws are less restrictive in the sense that you (the alleged libel-er) can say more i believe that in the UK the burden of proof is backwards. here in the U.S. you (the person aggrieved) must prove the falseness of the statement, don't they place the burden on the libel-er to prove the statement is true over there? I've been told that legally stuff like that can be in the clear because of the anonymity of the internet though. I could go on a rant about how much I hate my commute, say something about how there are times where I WANT to cause an accident, get into an accident, but not have that particular post come back to haunt me. Has to do with lack of proof of actual intent or whatnot.

Delgado's "sometimes we get bored" comment in 2007 is a prime example. There are times where it does seem in interviews, and reactions on the field that this team thinks it is the best team out there, but their play doesn't mesaure up to that. Or they act like the bully in the playground, where you just show that you are capable of fighting back, and they back off.

="Benjamin Grimm"]Yes, it's been a one-sided rivalry for a long time. I was surprised, when I moved to the Philly suburbs back in 1988, to find so much hatred for the Mets. Philadelphia also has a one-sided rivalry with the Eagles/Cowboys. And in both cases, they have no idea. People here are surprisingly provincial. I'm pretty sure the Dallas side got reved up during the halcyon days of the 1990s, probably still to this day. Dating back to Buddy Ryan supposedly putting bounties on several players, including Troy Aikman, all the way through Michael Irvin's career coming to an end on the Vet turf, and Philly fans cheering the injury.
