  1. I think the degree of difficulty on position players must be much higher. I am struggling to even think of possibilities. Tom Glavine, 1999 Braves/2006 Mets
  2. David Cone. 1988 Mets and 2000, that other team.
  3. Edgy MD wrote: As for the Manfred Man, from 2016 to 2019, the away team had a .485 winning pct. in extra innings. In the last two years, the away teams have had a .536 winning pct. So we're looking at something like the difference between a Bobby Valentine Mets team and a Joe Frazier Mets team. I think this goes down as a "changing the integrity of the game" issue. Agreed. That is a startling statistic and should be discussed more broadly. I've long felt that the extra runner unfairly privileges the weaker team but that data is quite striking.
  4. 21. Thanks, Seattle.
  5. 22
  6. Down to 23.
  7. There has been no coverage about the idiotic ghost runner. The point is that given these other rule changes, the “justification” for that rule has been eliminated, and that abomination should be eliminated post haste.
  8. Edgy MD wrote: Eighth inning. Not sure Naquin should be batting here, but I'm not sure what alternatives are available. Exactly. Playing short without Marte, and then there's Gore who can't hit. One wonders about bench construction…
  9. Speeding up the game by using pitch clock means that the stupid free runner can go away. All agreed? Great.
  10. …and promptly singles.
  11. Escobar looks totally lost against the lefty.
  12. Still up a half game. 25.
  13. Mets up a half game, Magic number down to 26.
  14. I regret nothing. Fangraphs playoff odds have Mets at 100% chance of making the postseason. For that to not happen requires something far different than what we've seen here (a minor stumble). Mets are on pace for 100+ wins, which would be the second best season in team history. Maybe it'll take longer than we'd like but I still think the Mets hold off Atlanta by virtue of the weaker schedule.
  15. =bmfc1 post_id=106477 time=1662506864 user_id=73]WTF Pete? Call up Dom and give Pete a game off.
  16. More likely he will go 3-4 and be backed up by Williams.

I can't remember now if it was the same author or others but there was some fascinating data from soccer games played sans fans in the earlier parts of the pandemic, basically revealing that without the fans there, the visiting team got a lot more calls.

There is a compelling argument that the NL #2 seed is a better spot to be in. I like the idea of best record because (a) best is best and ( screw the Dodgers. But: do we really want to face the Braves in the division series? I kind of prefer the idea of Atlanta and LA having to play each other first. Obviously we want to finish ahead of Houston and the junior circuit New York team.
  19. I voted 25 because, why not? It's a magical season.
  20. The only correction I have is that in the bottom of the first, Teufel and Floyd advanced to third and second by operation of the “walk” that wasn't. I was keeping a scorebook in real time and did fine with the batting out of order, and the Elster/Santana two-batters-in-one. But when the players started playing for both teams, it was hopeless. I will also note that in what was some exceptionally generous exercising of discretion, whoever the “official scorer” was did not charge any errors in real time.
  21. Boos are for people who do bad things, like a Marcell Ozuna or an Aroldis Chapman. It's not for poor performance on the field. That's better met with silence. Booing your own team's players is dumb, unless they fall into the first category. Booing the opposing team's best players? Eh. Who cares. I don't think twice about Bryce Harper or Freddie Freeman. Unless, again, they fall into category 1 above.
  22. I'm not so sure that “overrated” is quite the right description, especially since there have been some statistical analyses of precisely how extreme (or not) homefield advantage is. There was a really good book called “Scorecasting” that came out about 10 years ago that analyzed it. IIRC, it was indeed basketball and soccer that had some of the highest advantages to being at home, and baseball was one of the lower advantages. That said, of course the Mets want to have it, and it's significantly better for Mets fans to have it (convenience factor for attending/watching games).
  23. A top-5 win for the season, no doubt.
