  1. I recall reading once that Connie Mack's son stepped in to run the team several times when his dad was in his 70s. Not quite official though.
  2. Allen and Boyer are interesting cases. No to Garvey, Parker, or Tiant. Dr. Jobe would also be an interesting candidate but not John himself. I'll admit unfamiliarity with Donaldson and Harris. Time for some reading!
  3. Instead of spending 5/$180 on Cole, that money might better be used on a Corbin Burnes. If Cole does hit the open market, I wouldn't be opposed to the Mets signing him for a 2 or 3 year deal.
  4. Benjamin Grimm wrote: And you have to be willing to accept that your guy is likely to be overpaid at the back end of that deal. I would reword this as: you have to be willing to potentially make difficult decisions about benching/releasing a player and the end of the contract when he's still owed money. A 10 or 12 or 15 year always comes with an assumption of a production dropoff towards the end. What is being paid for, of course, is the superstar production at the beginning/middle. It's just money spread out more.
  5. Benjamin Grimm wrote: I'm pretty certain the Mets will be in on Soto, and least until and unless he asks for a tent in the parking lot. And I'm very much hoping they sign him. He can have a tent in the parking lot, or his own merchandise stand, or whatever else he wants. (Incidentally, the original 10 year/opt-out after 7 deal that Rodriguez signed with Texas in 2001 turned out to be an all-time great contact signing for the club(s) he played for).
  6. I would expect the lawyers advised them to give the refund for a game they prospectively cannot attend (and during which they have not violated license terms, since the game hasn't started yet). It's the easiest way — “Your ticket is a revocable license, and we just revoked it. Here's your money back.” Beyond the ejection-without-refund yesterday (for violating the terms of yesterday's license) options are limited. Criminal charges effectively requires a victim willing to press charges (Betts didn't seem interested). Civil tort claims would require proving some damages (unclear what those are). That said, they absolutely require more severe punishment. Revocation of next year's season tickets at a minimum, and longer term ban from MLB stadia seems appropriate.
  7. Edgy MD wrote: I imagine that they can, but it's probably not the best fit relative to the organization's preferences and priorities. I actually wouldn't be so sure it's a viable option. It hasn't been a dual-purpose facility in quite some time now.
  8. Those NY Post “articles” — and that is a generous term — about ticket prices (they regularly run them about Taylor Swift shows and other high demand events) are thinly-disguised clickbait/advertisements with sponsored links to secondary market sellers. It's not exactly surprising for the NY Post but it's still unworthy of our attention. That said, it should come as no surprise whatsoever that ticket prices dropped close to the event and with one team ahead 2-0. You could have also easily purchased primary market tickets — direct from the Yankees — for today's game if you wanted. They were still $900+ of course. The market will move but only so much.
  9. Frayed Knot wrote: Gotta say, this is the first time I've heard the argument that having the top teams and several of the games top stars in the WS makes it a less interesting matchup. Personally I prefer seeing two first place teams playing for the championship over last year's AL's 4th best vs NL's 6th No one said it's a generally a bad thing having first place teams advance. These particular teams make it a “meh” matchup. Also didn't know that this one was unique in using the universal DH. This is a lazy argument and you know better than this. The point clearly was that the universal DH particularly hinders strategy in this matchup of these two teams.
  10. It is wrong and should be fixed. We can all agree on that. But like all awful MLB decisions, it's money-driven.
  11. Frayed Knot wrote: =Gwreck post_id=177511 time=1729897294 user_id=56] This is the least appealing or interesting World Series matchup since Satan's Series of 2009. No thanks. Not liking either team is understandable. I just don't think that makes it uninteresting.

  13. The primary sale tickets were $900+ for standing room at Yankee Stadium. It's a seller's market, and the teams knew it when selling the tickets. The markup on the secondary market is, on a percentage basis, smaller than in past years since the primary sale prices were so high.
  14. Agreed. And how could it be, with Soto also a free agent.
  15. =Centerfield post_id=177301 time=1729622460 user_id=65]He'll be 33 in April of 2025 and on last year of his contract, and by then 3 years removed from his batting title.
  16. I laughed. In all seriousness, the faster we can get away from Grimace, the better. Let 2024 remain 2024.
  17. I think the “we're not sure we have room for him” approach is misguided. There are always injuries and things moving around. You can worry about the roster cut-down in March. Sign the good players and then figure it out. Now, if the Mets want to part with Iglesias because career-year-at-age-34 is not likely to be repeated, that's fine. But a “space” concern shouldn't even be entertained at this juncture, especially considering the Mets resources.
  18. Bob Alpacadaca wrote: Who do you want to come back, and who do wave a fond farewell to? Farewell to: JD Martinez, Jose Quintana, Brooks Raley, Luis Severino Would like to retain: Pete Alonso, Sean Manaea, Phil Maton (I believe the Mets have a club option) Would consider retaining, on the right deal: Bader, Iglesias, Ottavino, Smith, Stanek, Winker
  19. A really fun season, and a team that overachieved expectations is really enjoyable to watch. This might be the first time ever that the Mets were truly outmatched by a better opponent in a postseason series, and didn't really have a chance to win. The Mets have a good core but there is a talent gap that was pretty clearly shown this series. The good news is that the Mets unquestionably have the resources to address that this offseason.
  20. It was a real mistake to not hit Iglesias for McNeil.

  23. I'm not sure they win this series but I do think they have fight in them to send it back to LA, and I'll take that small victory. And I do agree this is a stark reminder that the Mets are not as good as they have seemed at times. Lot of bad ju-ju at the park tonight, alas. Fans tried hard but this was a tough one. You can only lose the game once. Let's win tomorrow.

He spoke to DiComo: https://www.mlb.com/mets/news/questions-for-mets-ahead-of-nlcs-game-3-vs-dodgershttps://www.mlb.com/mets/news/questions-for-mets-ahead-of-nlcs-game-3-vs-dodgers [bLOCKQUOTE]Asked about his role after going unused for a second consecutive game in NLCS Game 2, Martinez replied: “That's a question for Carlos. I don't have much of a say. I'm kind of just waiting my turn. He doesn't obviously have confidence in me. He's got confidence in other people. So it's just one of those things.”[/bLOCKQUOTE] —- Let's see here: -Winker has the highest playoff OPS on the team -You have all the versatility of a boulder, being completely unable to play in the field -You haven't hit since August Maybe not the best comments to make here. Stick to “I'm ready to help the team in any way I can, whenever and wherever Carlos needs me.”
