  1. Oh, I see. It was my expectation the Mets wouldn't go into the season with Baty assumed to be playing anywhere. If Baty's assumed to be in the starting lineup then sure, Iglesias is probably not a bad option to have around. But a repeat of the past year's performance (or something close to it) seems quite optimistic.
  2. Where do you get “weasel” from? I’ve not seen a single thing to suggest Pete isn’t acting in good faith. Negotiations can take a while.
  3. Edgy MD wrote: Their reserve infielders right now are Jared Young and Ronny Mauricio. One of them will be knocked off the roster if and when they add Alonso or an alternative, but both have options. So, yeah, there's room for Iglesias. And he has defensive value even if he's not hitting. You don't think Baty or Acuna can make the roster?
  4. Benjamin Grimm wrote: I hope not! Let's see... Senga, Manaea, Peterson, Holmes, Montas. Hmmm... I guess it would be a tight squeeze, but I think it could happen. Holmes is a reliever. Montas is…not that good? There's plenty of room to upgrade the pitching staff.
  5. Frayed Knot wrote: BB-Ref mentions his (somewhat obscure) record of Most Times Reaching Base of any RH Hitter I would've guessed that record belonged to Aaron or Mays, both of whom are a fair bit higher on the hits leaderboard.
  6. Bregman to third/Vientos to first is still probably the best alternative if they don’t sign Pete. After that? It gets much less desirable.
  7. Everyone knows about being the all-time leader in steals and runs scored, and probably the .401 lifetime OBP, but he also hit 297 homers! What a player.
  8. =G-Fafif post_id=181530 time=1734811237 user_id=55]MFYs sign the formerly admirable first baseman.
  9. Frayed Knot wrote: Three years for Walker, but he's nearly four years older than Pete and not the same level of power. Historically yes, but Walker and Alonso had basically the same offensive output the last 2 seasons (and with Gold Glove defense from Walker). I'd still prefer Pete but Walker off the market might be the best alternative now off the market.
  10. I believe the 3 division format was created in 1994, not 1997.
  11. Didn't get my edit it before you responded. Tigers were AL East even after the 3 divisions were created.
  12. Benjamin Grimm wrote: Portland would require a divisional realignment. The most logical choice would be to put the Astros in the East, but I think they'd fight to stay in the same division as the Rangers. But this is all very hypothetical, of course. I'd go with Tigers back to East (remember, they were an AL East team in 1994-1997 and didn't move to the Central until 1998 when Tampa showed up), and Astros back to Central.
  13. =smg58 post_id=181421 time=1734656923 user_id=62] I wouldn't overestimate the demand, especially since there are not many teams he'd accept a deal to. I also wouldn't underestimate the desire of the Cardinals to clear payroll (especially beyond this season) and open space for their top prospects (one of whom plays third base).
  14. I guess I like his upside a little more than Blackburn…but this is not the starting pitcher we are looking for.
  15. Benjamin Grimm wrote: Bregman to third base and Vientos to first, if it happens, still leaves room for young players to push their way into the lineup at second base or center field, for example. And first, and third, because of the DH slot. The takeaway is that there is no roster crunch at all. Mets need to get the best possible players on the team now. Not in a couple years.
  16. =Marshmallowmilkshake post_id=181244 time=1734448737 user_id=119]Seems like we do have a lot of infield talent in the minors to go and sign a long-term deal with a guy on the wrong side of 30.
  17. Nimmo has neither a diminishing nor an uncertain role with the team.
  18. Soto should (and will?) hit second. Nimmo should ideally hit 5 or 6 — depending on who is going to play DH and 1B. I don't see him playing center regularly but Nimmo is going to be a key contributor for coming successes for the Mets. 2.2 WAR in 2024, despite a down offensive season, put him at 8th most valuable Met.
  19. The Mets don't match well with a team looking for immediate talent. In theory, Vientos is the sort of player that fits that description…but then the Mets would have to sign someone else to fill the offensive void created by moving him. Is Bergman/Castillo a better option than Vientos/Manaea? Probably not.
  20. Edgy MD wrote: What happened is Steve Cohen's research netted him not the opinion of the wisest fans, but the loudest, and those were the ones projecting silly manufactured grievances over petty jealousies. It's worth remembering that the plan to increase number retirements is a Wilpon initiative. Koosman (and the plan to retire more) dates back that far — the actual Koosman retirement occurring in 2021 was a COVID delay. As for the loudest and not necessarily wisest fans: Howie Rose is chief among them in championing the number retirements.
  21. Frayed Knot wrote: They were rightfully so stingy with # Retirements for so long. I'm not happy that the Mets are finally retiring so many numbers and I think [CROSSOUT]a few of[/CROSSOUT] NONE OF the ones they've done RECENTLY, OTHER THAN DAVID are the right ones.
  22. Edgy MD wrote: Taylor's lefty/righty splits are mostly even. Hmmm. Maybe I imagined it. I thought there had been commentary that he was viewed as a reasonable option against righties because of past “successes.”
  23. Benjamin Grimm wrote: If the Mets weren't a finalist, it was probably because they didn't want to trade three or four top prospects for a two-year pitcher. I'm okay with that. The Mets have an immediate need for top-of-the-line starting pitching. Not in 2 or 3 years…this year, right now. It can also be acquired by spending lots and lots of money…but if the Mets don't want to trade prospects, they shouldn't also act as if they don't want to sign pitchers to 6 or 7 year deals.
