  1. Park. Pelfrey on Tuesday.
  2. I actually agree that it's time to bring a Championship back to New York.
  3. Adam Rubin's blog also reports that Gotay is coming up too, although it's not yet officially announced.
  4. Johnny Dickshot wrote: I even ordered from a waitervendor. Sellout.
  5. Maine 6 Wagner 1 Heilman .66 Schoenweis .34 Beltran 2
  6. A couple of the tougher ones: If Wagner went down, Heilman would get the closer role. Smith would be promoted from a situational/middle inning righty to the primary setup man role. Jon Adkins gets put on the 40 and called up to fill out the 'pen. If Valentin, Reyes or Wright went down, Easley would get their immediate at-bats with Hernandez (Valentin/Reyes) or Fernando Tatis (Wright) getting called up. Buster Olney in his blog today said that "it's not hard to imagine the Mets trading for Ronnie Belliard." Wouldn't be shocked to see a trade if one of these 3 went down. If any of the starters go down, the preferred order of recall is Park, Sosa, Vargas, Humber. If any righty reliever went down, Adkins would be recalled as a stop-gap until Mota comes back. If Schoenweis or Feliciano went down, I'd still recall Adkins and wait for Mota. There are very few lefty options (Willie Colazzo is the only one that comes to mind) in the minors.
  7. Spotaneous decision to drive down to DC for the game today. Nice weather. Maybe 20% Mets fans (announced attendance 27,000+) but they were all pretty quiet. Not mentioned in this IGT: First inning -- Reyes singles, Wright walks. What does Carlos Beltran, he of the among-the-lead-leaders-in-RBI do? He bunts. Of course, we fail to get a runner home from third with less than 2 out (again). Lucky for Carlos that he hit that homer, otherwise I'd be much more upset with him than I already was. Maine looked good to great (granted, it was not an offensive juggernaut he was facing) but was definetly ready to come out after the 7th inning (105 pitches and some trouble in the 7th) and he was due to lead off in the top of the 8th. RFK sucks generally but wasn't quite as bad as I expected. They also play Sweet Caroline (barf) in the 8th inning. Ticket prices were a bit high, IMO, for a last place team. Overall had a blast though. Looking forward to (repeat?) trips to see the new park next year.
  8. P.S. Replays showed the Easley was definetly out at 1st. Guess we got the make-up call.
  9. Wow, we can't hit. Re Ejections -- glad to see it happen here for Willie. I think he might've gotten tossed all of 2 times last year -- of course, it's hard to have a ton to argue about when you've got a 15 game lead all year.
  10. Alou 2.5 Perez 1.5 Green 1 Smith 1 Wright .5
  11. From Neyer's Transactions Primer Player To Be Named Later Quite often, you'll read that a player has been traded to another team for "a player to be named later." There are two restrictions at work here. First, the transaction must be completed within six months. And second, the player named later can't have played in the same league as the team he's being traded to. That's why the player named later is almost always a minor leaguer. And what if the teams can't agree on who that player will be? This happens rarely, but if no names are agreed upon initially, the clubs will agree on a price to paid in lieu of a player. Sometimes, at the time of the deal the team receiving the player will provide the other club a list of minor leaguers, and later the club will have their pick of the players on that list. This list is negotiated at the time of the trade. In recent years, the Minnesota Twins lost Enrique Wilson this way. When it came time for Cleveland to make their choice, the Twins did what they could to "hide" Wilson, but the Indians found him anyway. Finally, sometimes "Player to be named later" is used to trade players on the Disabled List, since it can be embarrassing for a club to trade for a guy who's on the DL.
  12. ="iramets"]="Gwreck"]="iramets"]Was he an emotional manager or a decision maker? He doesn't seem to implore his players to play hard, or otherwise get under their skin, but he makes decisions and sticks with them What's the supporting data for the first assertion? How do you measure if someone "seems" to implore his players to play hard or not? Maybe that's a bad question, because I don't know how you'd know for sure. Guys like Lasorda and Piniella and Billy Martin gave a strong impression that they injected all sorts of emotion in their clubhouse, but maybe it was a front and they were calm, softspoken gentlemen behind closed doors, and Gil Hodges and Joe Torre might turn into fist-pumping, screaming maniacs once the reporters cleared out of the room. Do you want to make the case that Willie's all intense and emotional and high-drama? No. Do you want to answer my "bad" question? You put the weasel words into your statement. "Doesn't seem to implore his players to play hard." How do you know that? Emotional and high drama might be one way to "implore" your players to play hard, but I doubt it's the only one. I actually believe that Willie indeed DOES implore his players to play hard for him. I'm not sure how I can prove it, other perhaps third-hand sources. How do you know what you asserted? P.S. If all you want to say is that he doesn't act like Lou Pinella or Larry Bowa in the dugout, no problem -- the text just needs an edit or two.

  14. If you read the post, you'll see that Metsguyinmichigan actually owns one of those Mercury Mets jerseys...
  15. Good article from this week's SI. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2007/writers/the_bonus/04/25/valentine0430/index.html
  16. You could do the 3 walks via going to the mouth, and then have each batter simply walk back to the dugout instead of the base. They'd be called out once they reach the dugout for abandoning the base.
  17. It was a single. Down the left field line, IIRC. Won the 1-0 game. The record certainly can be broken. Go to your mouth repeatedly on the rubber and get automatic balls called. Or balk. Put two men on, then throw one pitch for the triple play.
  18. Whoops, I lied. The Ordonez walk-off was the next night, the 12th. (I was there too). So I guess the trivia isn't about light-hitting shortstops after all.
  19. I think Rey Ordonez hit a walk-off RBI single in the 10th inning in that Reed game.
  20. Very cool. I think my record still is 1:55 for a ARZ-LA (Schilling and Kevin Brown both pitched CGs) 2-0 game in April '01.
  21. Michael Young?
  22. I have no problem giving Duque less than 4. Unfortunately, his effort became slightly marginalized by the extra innings, as what led to the win included quality relief in late/extra innings (which is always point-worthy). I agree though that Chavez' hit cannot possibly be worth as much as Easley's homer. We were down to the last strike, and down a run. Endy was great but other people could've won that game or we could've gone to another inning if he didn't get it done. For Easley, it was him or we lose.
