  2. John Maine. 9-4, 2.24. By way of contrast, check out Cole Hamels (9-4, 3.87). Fuentes' 4+ ERA is also strange (and the Rox didn't need him as their lone representative, as he has been in the past).
  3. The "kiss cam" was funny -- the Phils were alternating shots of Male/Female couples in Phillies gear with shots of two Males who were clearly not a couple in Mets gear sitting next to each other. At the end, they put Castro and Gotay on it, as they were watching from the dugout, and Castro tried to kiss Gotay (who protested). Julio Franco looked terrible by not busting it down to first at the end of the game. He might've still been out, even with the bobbled ball -- but the loafature is inexcusable, especially for someone who should be providing veteran leadership (as he doesn't provide much else). DPs killed us. Surprised that over the 4 game series Gotay didn't get a start anywhere. Can he possibly play left field? I like Citizens Bank Park but it has a major design flaw. The whole "Ashburn Alley" thing they have in the outfield is nice buy way too small. Plus, all the signature concessions are out there -- and only there. If the "Crab Fries" are the most popular item, wouldn't it make sense to have stands scattered throughout the park, and on the upper level as well? Same thing with the cheesesteaks. Makes no sense to have an incredibly long line there and jam up the whole area.
  4. Thank you for the clarification -- I had a lengthy discussion with the guy sitting next to me on Sunday about whether it'd be an out or not. Howard's home run was even more impessive in person I think. Deep into the second deck. Good thing it didn't really matter. We had him up each of the 3 times as the first batter of the inning. Tons of Mets fans at this game, many were loud, fortunately not too many obnoxious ones. Crab fries at Citizens Bank Park = highly recommended.

  7. With the lefty going tonight, I woulda given Gotay a start this afternoon.

If you wished to avoid WFAN-style posting, perhaps the better step would have been to avoid throwing out the names of players the Mets have no chance of acquiring. WATP = an acronym I'm unfamiliar with.
  9. Sorry about the delay. I will update this later tonight, but here's what you need to know for the afternoon game: JD Durbin starts this afternoon. The Phillies are his 3rd organization this season -- he spent spring training with the Twins, and then was claimed on waivers by the Diamonbacks. After getting shelled in one early April outing at Coors Field, he was waived and claimed by the Phillies. He made 10 starts in Triple A, (2-4, 4.55 ERA). This is his second major league start, with the last one coming in 2004 with the Twins. Link to KTE from earlier this month Phillies have recalled Chris Coste, a catcher who impressed last year in his rookie season in 200 ABs (7 HR, 32 RBI, .881 OPS). Of course, that rookie season came at age 33. He also looks like Jamie Moyer's brother. Lieber and Garcia are hurt. Utley is leading the league in RBI. Howard has started to heat up. Phils won last night on a walkoff RBI double by Rollins in the 10th.

  11. Went to the free showing of the "Glory Days" exhibition at the Museum of the City of New York tonight. The exhibition is all about baseball in the 1947-1957 period -- an 11year period in which a New York team was playing in the World Series each year except one, and in 7 of those 11 years, a subway series took place. I expect that I'll go back a second time to take it all in again, but from the first look, it's definetly worth a trip if you're in the area. Sort of like a mini-Cooperstown focused on the three teams. A few Mets things, even, as part of a bit about Dodgers who went on to play/manage the Mets. Gil Hodges' three year managerial contract with the Mets for 1968-1970 reveals that he was paid $50,000 a year. Schaefer Content: Old photo of Ebbets Field on display, and on the right side of the scoreboard, below the main Schaefer beer ad (which adorned the top of the scoreboard with the slogan "Real Beer!") there's a "Schaefer Awards" sign with two spaces for names of players below it. The picture has "Neal" and "Drysdale" as the two names. I wonder if there's any relation to our venerable tradition.
  12. Elster88 wrote: All I was pointing out by responding to your statement was that it's possible, that the chances are greater than "less than zero". Setting aside the "anything's possible, the Mets could offer Reyes, Wright, Humber and Pelfrey" types of examples, I challenge you to offer a hypothetical situation in which the Astros trade Oswalt. Did I use hyperbole? Absolutely. Am I wrong? I doubt it.
  13. Vic Sage wrote: guess the first test of the HOF-worthiness of a full-time DH will first be tested in a few years by Edgar Martinez. But he's a borderline candidate, compared to Thomas. I don't think Martinez is a "borderline" candidate. That's selling his career numbers pretty short. The .311 batting average and .933 OPS are pretty damn good.

  15. Edgy DC wrote: That's hardly to be unexpected, but the Mets make the deal anyway because that 38% difference in bang could have been the difference on a playoff spot, or advancing a round in the post-season. Certainly. Shouldn't we factor in Delgado's Postseason win shares (I'm sure he was tops or 2nd among hitters) too?
  16. Roster move coming this week with no obvious answer. Gotay would have to go through waivers, and we'd risk losing him. Removing Ledee would leave us with only 3 outfielders. Schoeneweis could get demoted, and would likely clear waivers. Smith has options.
  17. I remember them talking about Klapisch and Bonilla in the 92-93 years but wasn't paying much attention either.
  18. Rotblatt wrote: So while that metric doesn't take into account the $ spent (which would factor negatively against this trade) or Delgado's role in our playoff run last year (which would factor positively for this trade), it still strikes me as a relatively uselful tool . . . Going by pure production, Delgado has been worth 24 runs over the trio for whom he was traded. Aren't win shares affected by how many wins the team a player is on has? Therefore, if a player his .330-30-120 but is on a team that wins 80 games, might he have more win shares than a team that wins 97 games? --- Ex. Player A has great offensive numbers, but puts them up in games that his team frequently loses, either due to starting or relief pitching failure. Player B plays for a team with a great bullpen and never blows a game. He puts up similar offensive numbers, but they're in games that his team wins most of the time. Wouldn't Player A have fewer win shares than Player B, even if they had the same gross offensive production?

  20. Perhaps it would be better if you could provide a persuasive counterargument or proposed situation in which the Astros would deal Oswalt to the Mets.
  21. 1-3, 5.32 ERA. Nice investment there by the MFYs.

The chance of getting Oswalt, now that he's signed a lengthy contract extension for a reasonable price is less than zero. Of course you have no way of knowing if this is true or not. He's under the Astros control until 2012. The contract extension was 5 years at 75 million (plus a $16 mil club option for 2012), which is under market value. Is my name Tim Purpura? No. Am I sure he's not being traded? Yes.
