Very good for a while, with nice counting stats... but at an offensively-loaded position, in a very offensively-loaded era, and with little else to recommend him (yes, he's got Gold Gloves... but he was no great fielder; no other outstanding positive asterisks, either). He seems borderline at best even before one takes potential heavy PED use into account. Palmeiro is not a "potential" PED user; he was caught and suspended. But let's leave that aside for the time being. No doubt his "counting stats" are his main asset but I am hesitant to attach a negative connotation to them. His career WAR and career OPS+ aren't at the top of the career leaderboard, but they also aren't out of line with other HOF players (and not just the borderline ones, either). As for those counting stats, they are impressive. Perhaps less so in the context of the era, but he's still at the top of the heap and I do think that playing at a high level for a long time means something. --- Now, as for how he was able to play well for so long? I'm quite sure that will keep him out of the HOF.
  2. I got it correct, also because I remembered the uniform number.

Disclaimer: I know I bring up this argument, or a variant thereof, on an annual basis in this thread. But so long as we're assigning asterisks I don't think it's out of place.
  4. Edit: Hillman was 6'10." I must've been confusing him with 6' 9" Terry Bross.
  5. I seem to recall Marty N. following your predicted outcome exactly -- he planned to vote for Alomar, but not in the first year. (Although I think he wanted to "wait" because of the spitting incident).
  6. Benjamin Grimm wrote: Me, I would never vote for ten. At most, one or two. Who would you have left out in 1999? Ryan, Yount, Brett or Fisk?
  7. Alomar was a first-timer last year and missed by like 8 votes or something.
  8. Vic Sage wrote: * = steroids I'm sorry, how do you know that Juan Gonzalez used steroids but Roberto Alomar did not?
  9. Alomar Bagwell Blyleven Edgar Martinez McGwire Palmeiro Raines
  10. I would've forgotten these people but I recall G-Fafif recently remarking about he always forgot (or confused) Tyler Walker, and I think metirish was discussing Strickland recently. But I could've never gotten Watson.
  11. HINT: Three of the remaining four players were once involved in the same trade. Scott Strickland, Bruce Chen and...um...no idea who that third player is. Also, Tyler Walker (not to be confused with Pete Walker or Tyler Yates) was still active somewhere this past year I believe.

KC and I were discussing this very subject during the May 25 game against the Phillies when Valdes came to bat in 8th against our old friend Nelson Figueroa and sure enough, he proceeded to hit a double over Victorino's head in centerfield that scored Barajas from second base, extending the Mets' lead to 6.

  14. Who the hell gave a second-place vote to Ryan Howard?
  15. Jim Leyritz was acquitted of manslaughter. The only conviction was for DUI, a misdemeanor (!).
  16. Chavez was playing in the Texas minor league system this year as he rehabbed from a torn ACL. Floyd is retired and is working as a broadcaster for Fox Sports Florida and also did some work on the MLB Network.
  17. Maybe now we can retroactively get Johan that 2008 Cy Young Award he deserved but was denied due to bad voting.
  18. This is pretty much the worst possible idea they could think of. Maybe if that crook of a governor over there in New Jersey hadn't interfered with the critical "ARC" rail tunnel stupid ideas like this wouldn't be considered. (No offense intended to Chad as I too would like him to have easy access to the games).
  19. Same thing as sharpie, 18 of 32. I cannot remember who Bruce Botche was.
  20. Hmmm. My apologies to LWFS for the Rey Ordonez, my source on this was clearly incorrect. Matsui and Reyes are correct. Huskey is incorrect. Other answer we were looking for was Bobby Jones, 1994. Davis - 2 points, 2010 Payton - 37 points, 2000 Ordonez, 6 points, 1997 LWFS Isringhausen - 4 points, 1995 Lunchbucket Bobby Jones - 3 points, 1994 Wigginton - 1 point, 2003 Edgy Reyes - 1 point, 2003 metsmarathon Matsui- 1 point, 2004 metsmarathon

  22. Edgy DC wrote: Wigginton. Correct! 1 point (ie. 1 third-place vote) in 2003.

  25.
