  1. A few more observations from the game: Unlike every other spring training manager these days, Terry Collins doesn't sit in one of those chairs outside the dugout; he is on the front rail of the dugout the whole time. Tim Teufel was there, coaching first base but more notably spending a lot of time with Murphy on second base practice, particularly on fielding grounders and making the throw to the shortstop to start a double play. Hillarious moment as Chip Hale was waving the runner in on Turner's RBI double and he was waving his arm so enthustiastically that his legs gave out from under him and he fell to the ground.
  2. Dillon Gee got knocked around for 3 runs, including a Chipper homer (ugh). First Met hit comes in the 6th inning in the form of a Justin Turner single. He promptly got thrown out stealing second. A Nieuwenheis RBI single and a two run Martinez double have the Mets on the board. 5-3, middle of the 6th.
  3. Whole lot of defensive ugliness. An Emaus error (later changed to a hit) when he fell down fielding a sharp liner led to a run in the second. In the third: Derek Lowe leadoff double; Bunt single when Pelf, Davis and Emaus all tried to go for the bunt and nobody covered first; RBI grounder to third during which Wright throws home (wide) and Thole keeps his foot on the plate when trying to catch it -- but it wasn't a force play -- and he can't tag the runner.
  4. Davis worked out a walk from Derek Lowe and we already had an E4 for Uggla but an Emaus GIDP ended things. Quick 1-2-3 first for Pelfrey. Braves playing most of their starters except for Heyward.
  5. Not much happening yet. Linda Cohn of Sportscenter filming a bit where she plays catch with David. More genuine moment as she has someone take a photo on her iPhone of her and Ike Davis together.
  6. Free wifi here at Disney's Wide World of Sports complex. Pleasant surprise to see Wright and Reyes making this road trip. Today's lineup: Reyes SS Harris CF Wright 3B Davis 1B Evans LF Martinez RF Emaus 2B Thole C Pelfrey P
  7. IIRC, he actually did average 3-4 assists per game in college (Triangle offense and all). Sweet outside shot for a big man, too. That's the Princeton offense, not the Triangle offense. In his 99-00 season (Ivy League champs under coach Bill Carmody): .502 FG%, 13.5 Pts, 5.8 Rebounds, 3.35 Assists, 2.81 Blocks, 1.27 Steals average per game. Of note: he also wore number 55 on the basketball court.
  8. The impression that I get is that Horwitz is very well thought of in his job of media relations -- dealing with the beat writers, the local and national press -- in the context of baseball issues. I find the Mets to generally be lacking in the area of public relations, and particularly with respect to non-player and non-baseball issues.

  10. Adam Rubin expects Beltran to announce today that he will be playing right field.
  11. Ceetar wrote: Rubin is a clown and has a grudge of some sort. It has nothing to do with Omar and Adam was just as exposed in that debacle. To me this reads as pot, kettle, black.
  12. You're contradicting yourself. First, you suggest the Wilpons have no reason to be fully open and honest, yet in the next paragraph, you suggest that they're the people you're going to "lean towards" (I presume this means "give the most credence to"). Plus, what's with the claims of Rubin being biased? Seriously? Didn't Omar get exposed for how ridiculous that is? Finally, the Mets didn't just borrow $25 million. As the Times article says, they already exhausted their ordinary line of credit from MLB -- and then borrowed ANOTHER $25 million.
  13. batmagadanleadoff wrote: What do you think of the Times' allegations, notwithstanding that their sources are secret? I think the Wilpons and Katzes are totally screwed and need to sell the entire team.
  14. Article has now been edited by the Times to reflect that the Mets issued a statement acknowledging receipt of the loan. Reference to $20 M was deleted.
  15. Pretty poor proofreading job on the article put on their website. (http://www.nytimes.com/2011/02/26/sports/baseball/26mets.html) First sentence reads that $25 million was loaned, without referencing a source for the information. 4 paragraphs later, we learn that the Mets "have exhausted baseballs standard bank line of credit $75 million Selig and the sports owners make available to teams for a variety of reasons in the course of any year." No source for that information. We also learn that the $25 million was a "secret" loan, but again, no source for the information. 9 paragraphs later, there's this line: "The baseball executive said he believed Selig had loaned the Mets in the neighborhood of $20 million." No mention of who this executive is.
  16. Thanks for the advance heads-up. Won't be watching that one.
  17. I like the "over" bets on Baltimore, Oakland and Mets. Like the "under" bets on Los Angeles (A), Tampa and San Diego.
  18. Yeah. One way to get a 259 is to bowl 10 strikes and 2 spares.
  19. I think my favorite Maine memory was Game 6 of the NLCS in 2006, when he outdueled Chris Carpenter to force Game 7.
  20. 50-50. May have to do a fantasy baseball draft that day.
  21. Valadius wrote: In defense of Port St. Lucie, the city has actually grown rapidly during the last decade. Its population jumped from 89,000 to 155,000 between 2000 and 2009. Of course, besides the Mets, I can't quite speak for whatever attractions the city has. Suburban sprawl does not mean interesting. Have you ever been to Port St. Lucie?
  22. When I think credibility and meaningful opinions that I value, I think Jim Cramer.
  23. I realize the tangential nature of this, but how about that conflict of interest in the very reporting of the story? I realize they disclose it (12 paragraphs in) but you've got the reporter conducting this interview for her book, coming out this spring (publicizing it by the very presence of the disclosure), which is coming out on Times Books (an imprint of the paper).
  24. smg58 wrote: and nothing to do with the Yankees and Red Sox having openings in right field next offseason. Both of those teams also have openings at DH next year (Posada and Ortiz are free agents).
  25. In 116 ABs, Jay managed to hit 20 singles and 1 double. Good lord, I had forgotten how bad that was.
