The percentages favor Hairston being better in that role, and the marginal increase in money from being 'competitive' the rest of this year is probably enough to pay for Hairston. Exactly what "percentages" favor Hairston being "better" in the role of "right-handed bat off the bench?"

If there's no reason to believe trades will get you to the playoffs this year, why are we keeping upcoming free agents with trade value? Is there any actual evidence to suggest that a player is "more likely to re-sign" with the Mets versus getting something back and then still having a chance to sign that same player on the open market just like everyone else? Can we just file that idea away already, together with the measurement of how "clutch" a player is?

  6. So I tune in, not seeing the lineups and after Bay walks, Ronny comes up. Nice hit. But then there's another hitter (not the pitcher) after Cedeno! And I think to myself, what kind of world are we living in where Jason Bay could possibly be hitting higher than seventh?
  7. Thanks. Among other things learned from the video: Howie is a southpaw.
  8. They did also win 116 games that year (admittedly with Ichiro a large part of that).

There were plenty of folks out there who had a team for 20 years but who never paid attention to them until Ichiro arrived. I witnessed that phenomenon firsthand - your point of order is denied. I think you (or your in-laws) are confused on the timeline and are forgetting that Ichiro did not arrive until 2001. As an example, the Mariners drew 3.2 million fans in 2000. To suggest their fans didn't exist before Ichiro is ludicrous.
  10. themetfairy wrote: What a slap in the face to Mariners fans, who basically didn't exist before Ichiro. Point of order: The Mariners were already an outstanding team with tons of fan support before Ichiro. His Mariner tenure did not overlap with Randy Johnson, Ken Griffey Jr. or Alex Rodiguez. The Mariner fans were already packing their new stadium a couple of years before Ichiro showed up. As for the slap-in-the-face thing: yep. Mariner fan friends report this weeks' series as "surreal."
  11. Bad call at first: Davis obviously safe.
  12. Hey, Tony LaRussa: fuck you.
  13. I wonder if we're on Carlos Lee's no-trade list.
  14. Worst error at Dodger Stadium since Jeremy Reed.
  15. I'd take Ike out of the game.
  16. Actually, Jackie Robinson never played for either team in this game. He played in Brooklyn, not Los Angeles.
  17. That fucking needs to be caught.

That's a coincidence, I don't want the ball hit to Duda either. Late night games like this make me come up with brilliant ideas, such as switching Duda and Davis' positions. Would we have a better overall defense if they switched places? I'm thinking, maybe.
  19. Tigers wouldn't take Murphy; they can ill-afford another below-average fielder as they've already got Cabrera and Fielder on the corners. I bet they'd give us a sack of baseballs or two for Valdespin or Cedeno.
  20. Where the fuck was Byrdak??? Cano: lefty. Teixeira: lefty Swisher: switch, admittedly better against lefties but not a huge difference. Ibanez: lefty. What the hell was he waiting for? I note that I had this same thought before the top of the 8th and said so aloud; the douchebag Yankee fans sitting near me could confirm. Really fed up with Terry here. Also, the rest of the team didn't exactly impress.

  22. ERROR on JETER. Excellent.
  23. The host of the first couple years of "Kids Clubhouse" on SNY (2006-07, I think) was Amanda Cole, Kenneth's daughter.
