  1. It's not arguable. Morris played in the steroid era. Right in the middle of it. So did Trammell and Raines, for that matter.
  2. HOF has released some additional voters' ballots here. Lots of frustration to pick through here. Couple of highlights: -Larry Rocca votes for Trammell, Raines, Jack Morris and Hideo Nomo. -Steve Kornacki of FoxSportsDetroit votes for 10 players. He includes Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa but not Barry Bonds. Let me know if you figure that one out. -Joseph E. Hoppel votes for four players. Includes Jeff Bagwell but not Frank Thomas. -Dave Cunningham includes a full 10 players and has both Bagwell and Don Mattingly, but not Frank Thomas.

Looks just about perfect to me. Might have gone with Trammell instead of Edgar but that's an excellent vote.

  5. Zvon wrote: This is mind boggling. What the hell do you have to do to get in? Get 75%? There are all sorts of problems with Hall of Fame voters but obviously nobody could intend for Biggio to get that exact total. He will get in next year.
  6. Armando got one vote. Biggio missed election by 2 votes.
  7. Two oddball memories: 1. The douchebag that showed up three songs into the show and then spilled his entire beer on me at the second of the three Springsteen shows in 2003. 2. August 31, 1992 was a twi-night doubleheader against the Braves. Back in the days when the Braves were still likeable and this was a nice late summer night for a game. Braves had a big lead before the Mets would tie up the game in the bottom of the 8th. I remember leaving in the 12th inning...of GAME 1. Under protest, but I wasn't driving and public transit wasn't an option at the time. The fact that the Mets would lose game 1 in the 14th, and then also lose game 2 is beside the point. You don't leave extra-inning games early. Has always bothered me.
  8. I have no idea who gun-outhouse is. My guess is Tom Candiotti. I really hope that's not the same guess as above.
  9. Edgy MD wrote: Trading him for Eli Marrero was pretty funny. Marrero joins Kelly Shoppach as veteran Mets catchers acquired late toward the end of the season, when they apparently weren't really certain they even wanted to play anymore. Marrero is probably the most forgettable part of the magical 2006 season. He was acquired mid season (June) and was released in early August. An he wasn't even a catcher by the time he reached the Mets - he was playing the outfield, I recall. I think he might have hit a home run against the MFYs (off Randy Johnson). That might have been his final major league homer.
  10. But to bring this back on topic: LWFS has the right idea. Viable MVP candidates aren't available at a discount very often. You take Kemp.

No, it doesn't hurt to ask. Of course we all know what the answer would be. If for some reason the Dodgers don't sign him to an extension (which they will) it would be incredible to see the market for him.
  12. When was the last time someone left the Mets without being thrown under the bus first?
  13. Robin Ventura?
  14. Jerry Grote. Wasn't there some recent discussion here about how underrated his defense was?
  15. ESPN says that Miller got "no more than 6 votes." Marvin Miller, the pioneering head of the players' association from 1966 to 1981, was rejected for admission to the Hall for the sixth time he appeared on a committee ballot. He fell one vote short of induction in 2010 and received no more than six votes this year.
  16. Isn't there also the issue of Davis' salary, which would be decided pre-spring training? There may be better uses of that $3.5 million.
  17. It depends on what who we would put at second base. There is no doubt in my mind that Hardy + replacement level second baseman is superior to Tejada/Murphy.
  18. This would be a great trade for the Mets.
  19. Who WILL get in: Maddux. Won't quite beat Seavers record due to some blank ballots or whatever but it'll be close. --- Morris, I fear. The juxtaposition with Maddux will be amusing, but the voters are dumb. Biggio, probably. The 3000 hits thing --- Thomas? Piazza goes up but remains a bit short. Glavine gets 70% and goes in next year.
  20. Who SHOULD get in: [u:1np5wfch]No-Brainers:[/u:1np5wfch] Bonds Clemens Maddux McGwire Piazza Thomas [u:1np5wfch]Tier 2:[/u:1np5wfch] Bagwell Glavine Raines Trammell [u:1np5wfch]Next Year:[/u:1np5wfch] Biggio Martinez Schilling Walker

  22. That's 7 years, not 6. And they're not giving him away free, either; I'm sure it would also cost premium prospects. I'm quite sure Braun's got plenty left in the tank but we're so obviously not getting him.
  23. Braun is signed through 2020 and is owed $127 million over that contract. The Mets are not acquiring him. This is dumber than the Tulowitzki nonsense that was circulating earlier.
  24. metsguyinmichigan wrote: OK, sportswriters. Justify those votes for Girardi! Vote breakdown here: http://bbwaa.com/13-al-mgr/ 2nd place votes from Andy McCullough and also Sheldon Ocker of the Akron Beacon Journal. Five 3rd place votes including one from, you guessed it, Bill Madden.
