  2. Ceetar wrote: Over/Under 3.5 of these are back next year? I'd say 5 of these guys are in the opening day lineup next year.
  3. With the Red Sox win and the Tigers loss, the pairings are set for the first round: Wild Card at Red Sox Tigers at Athletics
  4. Total Career CY Shares Santana: 2.72 I still maintain Santana earned and was robbed of the 2008 Award.
  5. Cardinals beat Nationals. Pirates win. Reds win. Reds and Pirates clinch playoff spots.
  6. Tigers have a +173 run differential, second best in baseball; suggests they've underperformed their expected win-loss by 6 games (should be 97-59 instead of 91-65). I think a lot of that is due to early season bullpen troubles when they had Jose Valverde and others pitching meaningful innings.
  7. I had never heard about it until a few years ago when I got to see one on display.* It's as cool as described above. * I cannot remember exactly where. Don't think it was Cooperstown. Might have been at the Museum of the City of New York when they did that subway series exhibit a few years ago.
  8. Pirates kept in tied but then Votto homered in the top of the 10th. Just a horrible loss for them. Should all three teams tie for the division, there would be a three-team tiebreak over two days, in which the teams are "A" "B" and "C." Monday: Team A at Team B. Loser is a wild card. Tuesday: Team C plays at winner of A/B. Winner is division winner. Loser is wildcard. Wednesday: Wildcard game. Loser goes home.

I really have no interest in being reminded of that series. I did some research a while back and the Game Score that Halladay put up in the middle game of that series was the "best" performance by a pitcher opposing the Mets that I've ever seen in person.

  11. The tiebreakers are head-to-head records. The coin-flip for home field advantage for tiebreaker games is a thing of the past.
  12. Pirates get a game back after the Cardinals lose in the 15th inning in Denver today. Let's go Bucs. -- If the Pirates and Cardinals should tie for the division, game #163 on Monday 9/30 would be played in Pittsburgh for the division championship. The wild card game would be Tuesday in St. Louis (if the Cardinals lose) and location TBD* (if the Pirates lose). *Pirates and Reds still have 6 head-to-head games left
  13. You don't suppose Lucas has a name-brand-cola-Porch shot in him, do you?
  14. Helton's career numbers are somewhat similar to those of Larry Walker, who's received 20-22% in the HOF elections the past three years. Neither one is getting in anytime soon. I wouldn't consider voting for Helton and Walker is a marginal candidate in my mind.
  15. I hate those cherry-picked statistical arguments. Find enough parameters and anyone can be the "only person since..." to do "x, y and z." Career WAR: Helton 61.1 Musial 128.1 Adjusted OPS: Musial 159 (15th all-time) Helton 133 (135th all-time) Good player, sure. Hall of fame? Not a chance. --- Also: Tulowitzki has 8 seasons and $145 million left on his contract. I somehow doubt the Mets are going to assume that payroll obligation.
  16. ESPN story The Rockies have an opening at first base...hmm. Sounds like the perfect place to [crossout]dump[/crossout] trade Ike Davis to.
  17. Employing Dave Howard. Allowing Dave Howard to speak on behalf of the team. Refusing to be honest about Citi Field's positives and negatives. Alienating fans with riddiculous approach to ticket sales for new park.
  18. Edgy MD wrote: 4. Replaced Hagin with Lewin. Partial credit, because it was preceded by four years of yelling "where are the runners, Wayne?" at the radio. But more significantly, moving Howie Rose back to radio after the passing of Bob Murphy. The two years of him and Gary Cohen together were just tremendously good radio. I can see one day him and Josh having a similar rapport.
  19. By nature of our interleague opponents (AL West) it looks like the Mets will be making 4 trips out to California: in April for Angels/Diamondbacks (plus Braves on the trip) in late May/early June for the Giants (preceded by stops in Philadelphia and Chicago) in July for Padres/Mariners, plus Milwaukee on the way back in August for Athletics/Dodgers. The Denver trip is in May, between trips to Philadelphia and Florida.
  20. Interleague games: at Los Angeles, April 11-13 at Yankees, May 12-13 vs Yankees, May 14-15 vs Oakland, June 24-25 vs Texas, July 4-6 at Seattle, July 21-23 at Oakland, August 19-20 vs Houston, September 26-28 (last series of the year)
  21. The Mets being on anything less than a 50,000 clear channel AM station is catastrophic
  22. The Royals played Detroit this weekend and got shellacked, 16-2 on Friday; but won on both Saturday and Sunday. The series they start in Cleveland tonight is huge for them.
  23. That's the last of Pittsburgh's games head-to-head with St. Louis. The Pirates were 7-2 at home and 1-5 on the road in the second half of this season against St. Louis. Things don't get easier for them yet, as they start a three game series in Texas tonight. They do have 7 games against the Cubs remaining, as well as another 6 against Cincinnati, which may well be critical to determining which of the three NL Central teams gets the division (with the other two getting the wild cards, a 98% certainty per ESPN playoff projections).
  24. Edgy MD wrote: I'm perhaps in the minority, but I kinda like expanding rosters. I keep hoping for a move to making teams designate 25 players to be active for one game. You want a roster of 38? No problem, but only 25 get to play that day. Will still get the manager extra flexibility (ie. you wouldn't designate yesterday or tomorrow's starting pitcher as "active") but levels the playing field between teams that call up 15 guys and teams that call up 3.
  25. With losses by Oakland, Tampa, and the MFYs, the Kansas City Royals pick up a game on everyone. They now have 12 games in a row against Detroit and Cleveland, sitting just 4.5 out of a wild card spot. It's only been 28 years since their last playoff appearance.
