I recall that Jayson Stark is also a big opponent of the 10-player limit. Time for the BBWAA to get their house in order. I also think there's probably some other voting reform that can be done. They make writers wait 10 years before getting a ballot. They should apply a similar rule to writers who no longer cover the game. If you're like our man Murray C. and you've stopped covering baseball, I think it's time to take those votes away.
  2. Scoscia, Black, Bochy, Showalter and Yost have been with their teams longer than Collins. Terry is among of several managers who started in the 2011 season: his peers in seniority are Fredi Gonzalez with Atlanta, Roenicke, Melvin and Mattingly. (And yes, it is true that of those long-tenured managers, only Black and Collins haven't been to the playoffs since the start of the 2011 season).

  5. The Foo Fighters concert is not a promotion. It's a separately ticketed event.
  6. Another offseason of smearing our players. Remember that RA Dickey, Cy Young Award winner, was too ego-centric? Remember Justin Turner didn't hustle enough? Maybe the Mets will finally get wise to the fact that this sort of childish tactic only makes the fans dislike the organization more. As if such a thing were possible.
  7. It's a good deal - the years and money are right. Nice start to the offseason. Now find us that one big bat, Sandy!
  8. The white with pinstripes always was the Mets' best uniform, so that's a welcome return. I can't believe I'm saying this but I would LOVE the black uniform over the eyesore that is the camouflage nonsense.

  10. 2014 Mets with positive WAR, per Baseball-reference Lagares 5.5 Duda 3.7 deGrom 3.5 Wright 2.8 Murphy 2.0 Niese 1.8 Nieuwenhuis 1.4 Tejada 1.4 Granderson 1.3 Familia 1.2 Young 0.9 Den Dekker 0.9 Edgin 0.9 Torres 0.9 Carlyle 0.9 Recker 0.8 Wheeler 0.7 Eveland 0.5 Gee 0.4 Black 0.4 Campbell 0.4 D'Arnaud 0.3 Matsuzaka 0.3 Farnsworth 0.2 Herrera 0.2 Davis 0.2 Flores 0.2 Goeddel 0.1 Yes, I realize that list is only 28 players. One thing that I found curious was that Baseball-reference did not seem to combine a pitcher's "pitching WAR" and their "batting WAR." (So I went ahead and did it for them/us). Combining them results in Meija getting a zero WAR, and Colon in the negative, as you might expect: his batting seriously hurt the Mets.
  11. I'm not sure he's the cleanup hitter we dream of but I wonder if Nick Markakis might be a worthy addition (at least compared to Michael Cuddyer). Had his 2015 option declined by the Orioles and is a free agent.
  12. Centerfield wrote: We are a cleanup hitter away from being a playoff team in 2015. I really believe this. This is the closest we have been in a long time. I agree. I also think that one factor missing from the analysis is the availability of three top-tier starting pitchers in the free agent class. Yes, I'd prefer it if the top free agents instead included hitters but I trust Sandy can appreciate the need to get the best available talent. Sign any one of them, and there's a lot less pain associated with losing one of our own top starters/starter prospects in order to get that necessary bat. Time for the Mets to act like the giant-market club they are.
  13. Yost did have a reliever up by the time Norse was batting, as per the Giants radio broadcast.
  14. No. Bochy's managed 20 seasons and has a record of .500. The 3 trips to the World Series in the last 5 years is nice but even if they win again I still don't see anything that puts him in the upper echelon of managers all-time.
  15. Rooting for KC. Predicting Giants in 5.
  16. Would Wade Davis be the first non-"closer" reliever to win an LCS MVP award? (I guess they could give it to Moustakas as well).
  17. John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: OTOH, Royals are one of those clubs capable of losing 4 in a row, aren't they? Yeah, to the Giants in the World Series. Like Colorado did in 2007 after going on a similar run - won play-in game in extra innings; swept DS and LCS.
