Do you really want to go Colon/Thor in games 1 and 2 holding back Harvey and deGrom? Not to mention that you could/would be facing Kershaw and Greinke in those two games. I do like the idea of starting Syndergaard in either Game 2 (if Mets have home-field) or Game 3 (if they don't).
  2. Dodgers beat the Giants 2-1 in the Greinke-Bumgarner showdown. Mets now 1.5 games behind the Dodgers for home-field advantage in first round of playoffs.
  3. Thanks, Brandon Moss!

Because it's better to wait until the very end and then somehow be unprepared if they don't clinch until the final day? I guess I can accept the superstition angle but let's not be naive and pretend the Mets' braintrust isn't considering these very items too. They have at least a 5.5 game lead. They're selling playoff tickets already.

  6. Royals have a chicken pox outbreak and Rios is sidelined for a while. They still care about getting best-overall record I think.

Benjamin Grimm wrote: If the Mets make the postseason the competition will be tougher than what they'll have faced the last month or so of the regular season, regardless of who their opponents are. Home field advantage in the NLDS is definitely something to root for, given the Mets advantage at home this season. (Although we shouldn't forget the recent three-game sweep by the Pirates at Citi Field. I'll admit that I'm scared of the Mets being swept in four games in the NLCS by either the Cardinals, Pirates or Cubs. I don't fear the Giants and their past postseason successes are (let's be honest) a bit fluky considering the quality of their teams. Even if Bumgarner pitched twice in an NLDS I would think the Mets would have the advantage.
  8. Well, I still hope the Yankees lose every game going forward. They are just less of a concern to me right now; I'd really rather not have the Mets facing Kershaw and Greinke in a short round 1 series.
  9. August 31: Mets 3, Phillies 1 Cardinals 8, Nationals 5 Red Sox 4, Yankees 3 However, the Dodgers won also. I wonder if (for the time being) triple happiness should include a Dodgers loss.

In fairness, there's a lot to make fun of, given that the Mets continue this stupid, ugly, faux-patriotic, ridiculous, America-hating, sensible-taste-offending, history-ignoring, unoriginal, largely-hollow excercise of wearing "camouflage" uniforms in some misplaced, wrong-headed, possibly-with-collateral-profit-motive idea that they are "honoring" the U.S. Military when in fact they could just make large cash donations to appropriate charities and service organizations that would probably (likely) do a lot more good instead.

  13. Have to run for Uribe.
  14. Benjamin Grimm wrote: And someday I'll be willing to say the same about Ryan Howard. Funny, I've never had a problem with Howard at all. He always struck me as a likeable player. Utley, Werth, Victorino or Ruiz, however? Not a chance.
  15. I like the idea of a postseason bullpen of Familia, Clippard, Gilmartin, C. Torres, Verrett and Matz. Given what happened in 2006 we can't have too many starters but I think it would take quite a bit to alter the expected playoff rotation of deGrom/Harvey/Niese/Syndergaard.
  16. Oh, I agree. Villains in sports are great. That's part of why the Chipper-love here is strange to see.
  17. seawolf17 wrote: he was never obnoxious, never rude Not exactly. "Take the two series between the teams in September 1999. In the first, Jones combined for four home runs and seven RBI to lead the Braves to a sweep in Atlanta. In the second, the Braves won two out of three at Shea Stadium, seemingly ending the Mets' playoff hopes. Jones infamously said afterward: 'Now all the Mets fans can go home and put their Yankee stuff on.'" Source: http://www.wsj.com/articles/SB10001424052702304724404577297924170173092
  18. You have to print. Not every ballpark has the technology to read the barcodes off the screen.
  19. The Yankee bench was trying to start something with Gomez earlier in the game when he popped out. Home run came in his next plate appearance.
  20. Centerfield wrote: The 2007 team had glaring holes, and specifically, inconsistent pitching. If the bullpen situation ever got as bad as 2007, I believe they would insert Matz and Gee into the pen and bolster it that way. 2008 was the year of the bullpen disaster. The 2007 pen was decent/average.
  21. Edgy MD wrote: "Chooch," man, not "Cheech." As in, rhymes with "Douche" Tough to expect a 4-game sweep on the road but I have a tough time seeing how the Mets shouldn't win ?3 games this series.
  22. Yes, intradivison record is the second tiebreaker. Determining Home-Field Advantage in Two-Team Tiebreakers 1. Head-to-head winning percentage during the regular season. 2. Higher winning percentage in intradivision games. 3. Higher winning percentage in intraleague games. 4. Higher winning percentage in the last half of intraleague games. 5. Higher winning percentage in the last half plus one intraleague game, provided that such additional game was not between the two tied clubs. Continue to go back one intraleague game at a time until the tie has been broken.
  23. Dodgers dropped their fifth game in a row today; Mets now have an equivalent record. We also have a season-series advantage over the Dodgers which I presume would be the tiebreaker for home-field advantage if they finished with the same record.
  24. The London comparison is flawed because of the relative popularity of soccer there compared to everything else. New York does have 9 major professional teams. Call it 11 if you want to include the soccer teams.
  25. Ceetar wrote: Never. Selling. The only bad thing about the Mets resurgence is that it forestalls/postpones the chance of new ownership.
