  2. Mookie Wilson, 14
  3. Jose Reyes, 7
  4. David Wright.
  5. Playoff expansion. DH expansion. Banning shifts. Putting runners on second base in extra innings. Why do you hate baseball, Rob Manfred?
  6. The divergence following MLB's decision to try to force McCourt out while bending over backwards to help the Wilpons is striking.
  7. They have won the division seven straight years and now added Mookie Betts. We added no hitters, and have Rick Porcello/Michael Wacha to replace Zack Wheeler.
  8. This is Cespedes money and he shouldn't have to give it up for a fucking accident. This is literally "you got cancer so we're canceling your insurance" territory. Sure, if they think he was doing stunt jumps in a thunderstorm or playing Misery with a friend, I get it. Hell, if they do HAVE medical evidence that it was more than just what he said, it was probably voluntarily given to them by Cespedes under the guise of them helping him heal and rehab. This is mildly better than voiding a contract for "going to the wrong doctors" but damn, it's a slippery slope to teams voiding your contract for simply getting hurt in any way off the field. Or using the wrong trainer. Or hell, the trainer said take it easy and you did an extra rep and strained your hamstring. oops, voided. No. Obviously there are not many details publicly known but a. The Mets cannot “void” a contract; b. people can agree to any number of things in a contract, including prohibitions on any number of activities; c. Your comment has tons of assumptions that you have no idea whether they are true or not. If Céspedes agreed to renegotiate a contract in the face of a grievance filed by the Mets (which is what was reported), then a fair inference is that Cespedes did not have the greatest bargaining power and/or faced a real chance of losing that grievance. Why he was in that position is of course still speculation. Your comment remains wildly inaccurate.
  9. As you are aware, that not what I wrote. I disagree that it is “insane” to sign Cole to a 9 year contract, and in support of that I cite that management is tremendously wealthy, running a successful and profitable enterprise, and this acquisition provides massive benefit in the short term. As noted, I am of the opinion that this contract could well wind up being a sunk cost at the back end but is worth doing because of the massive benefit now. I also disagreed with your suggestion that “image” could make this a bad investment. Why do you think a 9 year contract for Cole is a bad investment? Do you agree that it is “insane?” What are your doubts?
  10. I thought I was very clear, but in case I wasn't, the Mets shouldn't settle for a “pretty good” rotation.
  11. Edgy MD wrote: Images? Even for billionaires, there are good investments and bad ones. This investment is in fact good for their image, no? That they're willing to spend money necessary to compete?
  12. Seems like another potentially useful part but not the upgrade the team requires to be competitive.
  13. =41Forever post_id=28113 time=1576070287 user_id=69] Nine years for a pitcher seems insane.
  14. Edgy MD wrote: It think it's a pretty good rotation, and the beginning of the season is fifteen or sixteen weeks off. It's also not really locked in as such. The Mets were a “pretty good” team last year with a better rotation. We shouldn't settle for “pretty good.” On your second point, that's exactly the point I was making: they're not good enough yet, but there is time to fix the problem. Yes, they missed out on signing Wheeler, Strasburg, and/or Cole. Those were missteps by Brodie and ownership. There are still opportunities to correct course.
  15. Wacha is a player you take a flyer on when you want to have some extra depth as a long man and he's inexpensive if you have to cut him. He's not a replacement for Zack Wheeler. Not even close. If the Mets are intending a 2020 starting rotation of DeGrom, Syndergaard, Matz, Stroman, and Wacha, then they are not serious about fielding a winning team.
  16. I recall reading that Miller instructed before his death that no one accept on his behalf and that he wants the induction declined.
  17. =Ceetar post_id=27599 time=1575493057 user_id=102]80% would be different, but it sounds like switching to a more standard 'board of investors' type thing.
  18. The Mets' statement is in response to a Bloomberg story that is reporting that there are talks for Cohen to buy up to 80% of the team. https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2019-12-04/mets-in-talks-to-sell-up-to-80-of-team-to-steve-cohen-k3rra77khttps://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2019-12-04/mets-in-talks-to-sell-up-to-80-of-team-to-steve-cohen-k3rra77k
  19. Somewhere around the 80th pick next June.
  20. Nice to see the Mets remain committed to winning.

  22. Girardi is not a bullet “dodged.” There is zero indication that he would do a bad job as manager of the Mets. He's an opportunity missed. Is he the only opportunity for the Mets to hire a better manager for 2020? Certainly not. But an opportunity missed nonetheless.
  23. One name to scratch off the list of candidates: Girardi hired by Philadelphia.
  24. =41Forever post_id=24802 time=1571580821 user_id=69] Almost always pull for the National League. The White Sox were the rare exception.
