  2. Because the Mets are really sockin that ball
  3. Meet the Mets

  5. 1. 28-32 2. 3rd place 3. No playoffs under “ordinary” rules. Who knows under whatever idiotic expansion they do. 4. N/A 5. 16 homers.
  6. I bet Scherzer has started opening day every year he's been in Washington.
  7. Edgy MD wrote: The Mets' former AAA home of Norfolk/Tidewater is the largest area with no teams in any of the four major sports leagues. I don't believe that's correct. The Virginia Beach/Norfolk area is #2, after Austin, Texas.
  8. The Scooter/Big Man call was fun but greatest call? It seemed a bit gimmicky. Additionally, it wasn't even the first time Cohen had used it. He had used it in 2018 when Conforto and Bruce hit back-to-back homers off Scherzer.
  9. Reports are that discussions include a DH for the NL. I'd be willing to sacrifice the 2020 season if it meant there was no DH.
  10. I don't accept that Manfred had to make a statement. But even assuming arguendo that he did, this isn't hard. It isn't hard even if the owners and Manfred are acting in bad faith: “We are evaluating the situation and are continuing to address issues of health and safety. We hope to have further updates regarding the 2020 schedule shortly.”
  11. Unless he has reason to believe that a Billion Dollar grievance suit is coming his way the second he does so. Which is precisely why his public statement is idiotic.
  12. Frayed Knot wrote: Assuming this potential lawsuit thing is accurate, once the players told the clubs to go ahead and set a starting date and schedule I don't see how Manfred couldn't make a public statement. He could make a public statement to announce the beginning of the season, of course. For Manfred to now claim that the specter of a union grievance would delay the season is idiotic. Mike Vaccaro of the NY Post had a good take: https://nypost.com/2020/06/15/rob-manfred-showing-his-true-colors-as-he-lets-baseball-burn/https://nypost.com/2020/06/15/rob-manfred-showing-his-true-colors-as-he-lets-baseball-burn/ But [Manfred's] worst calamity has come in the last week. Then, he guaranteed a season with 100 percent certainty. Now he says he's not so sure. He is worried that if he enacts a season — which is his right — the players will file a grievance. That's his issue now? Did it just occur to him? At best that's malpractice. At worst it's sheer incompetence.. There's another good take from Tyler Kepner here: https://www.nytimes.com/2020/06/08/sports/baseball/mlb-season-owners-negotiations.htmlhttps://www.nytimes.com/2020/06/08/sports/baseball/mlb-season-owners-negotiations.html
  13. It's surprising that the owners would want Manfred making such dumb statements publicly.
  14. You don't need to be a lawyer to know that is a ridiculous position to take.
  15. =bmfc1 post_id=38475 time=1591740071 user_id=73] I've had it all wrong. I thought that the owners were greedy and making a fortune but that's not true according to the owner of the Cardinals: [bLOCKQUOTE]The industry isn't very profitable to be quite honest, and I think they understand that. But they think, you know, the owners are hiding profits, and you know there's been a little bit of a distrust there.[/bLOCKQUOTE]
  16. Neil was right, and Tom Hallion knows it.
  17. Edgy MD wrote: But it's hard to displace the 2000 playoff game that began the Mets pennant run. An Alfonzo home put the Mets up 4-1 in the ninth before a pinch-hit JT Snow three-run homer off of Armando Benitez tied it up and set up Benny Agbayani to put the Mets ahead for good in the 10th and John Franco to lock it down. I know we established this happened at the new park, but point of order: it was a Daryl Hamilton double and a Payton RBI single that gave the Mets the lead in Game 2. Benny's walk off homer was game 3.
  18. Tim Britton of The Athletic had a good article about constructing the best possible Mets lineup with 9 players whose tenures never overlapped. It's a good read if you subscribe, but even if you don't, it's a fun exercise. We are only considering the Mets portion of the career here for those inclined to pick Spahn or Mays. Britton has three possibilities in his article, but no need to spoil it. I came up with this team. They might be a little lacking defensively but should hit a lot of homers. Granderson LF (2014-17) Alfonzo 3B (1995-2002) Beltran CF (2005-2011) Alonso 1B (2019) Johnson SS (1985-1993) Marlon Byrd RF (2013) Ron Hunt 2B (1964-1966) Alex Trevino C (1978-1981) Seaver P Whaddya got?
  19. Who benefits from this? Certainly not any fans. Higher cost to attend if you have to also add travel. Nor the teams. Why give up a home field advantage?
  20. Fix the Citi Field scoreboard.
  21. I preferred the approach of “Hall of Famer who went in as a Met” approach to retired numbers. I could see it expanded to “spent entire career with team” as well. No to Koosman, Gooden, Strawberry, Carter, or Hernandez. There is a good Mets hall of Fame. Retired numbers are for a step above that.
  22. Well, of course the club cares what the player does or does not do: that's why they negotiate to have certain provisions in the contract in the first place. But it's not unfair to observe that nothing is likely to happen unless or until there's a reason the player can't perform. Of course a club is unlikely to spend the effort to monitor players around the clock. And of course a club would be unlikely to pursue action under the contract unless some prohibited activity results in the player being unable to perform.
