  1. a "pillow" contract? never heard that one before
  2. Vic Sage wrote: this team is clearly in "win now" mode. Trading a 33-year old Frazier for a 36-year old Choo is not really aging us significantly. And choo is coming off a better year than Frazier, and is a better overall player, whose road numbers still include an OPS over .800. And contract-wise, maybe they take Lagares off our hands, too, for some prospects, and then the money is a wash, more or less. And what good would Texas throwing in a ton of money do, if the CouPons are just going to put it in their pocket (or service debt) anyway? Choo for Frazier sounds good to me. Choo for Frazier and Lagares' contract sounds even better, but only if "Lagares' contract" gets spent elsewhere. otherwise he might as well be the 25th man to be replaced later
  3. Frayed Knot wrote: Yasmani Grandal explaining why (without mentioning the NYM offer in particular) he rejected any multi-year offer(s?): “I felt like part of my responsibility as a player was to respect the guys that went through this process before I did. Guys like Brian McCann and Russell Martin, Yadier Molina*. These are guys who established markets and pay levels for upper-tier catchers like me. I felt like I was doing a disservice if I were to take some of the deals that were being thrown around ... I wanted to keep the line moving, especially for some of the younger guys that are coming up. … To let them know, if you're worthy, then you should get paid what you're worth. That's where I was coming from.” * Yadier averages $20 mil/year on his current and, almost certainly, final deal; McCann makes $17; Martin $16.5. The NYM deal would have paid Grandal $15/per So apparently the AAV was more important to him -- and, by extension, his current and future tools of ignorance brethren -- than was a longer deal at a lower annual rate. That's certainly his right and, having just turned 30, it may work out for him in the long run even as there's a possibility he may wind up regretting that choice. Whether or not it works out for him individually, I'd think if what he cares about is long term trends he would have been better off establishing the 'trend' that veteran free agents in their 30's still get multi-year deals. one year deals play to management (as a fan i love them too) as getting stuck with a scrub for too long is worse than paying a little extra for the year.

  5. Yankees closer John Wettland joins what is becoming a long line of Yankee Criminal closers as he has been arrested on charges of sexual abuse of a child
  6. Frazier, Cano, Rosario, Lowrie seems most likely as Rosario is still seen as a top prospect and the other guys make lots of money. No way is Alonso in there. If 1B is a disaster they might not wait for 'super 2' in June but they will at least wait a week or two which gives them an extra year of control, even if that control comes with arbitration.
  7. NL only works with 8. If we get to 12 we should combine it. 10 I could go either way.
  8. I like the move and we'll see where it all goes, but I'm fine with acquiring a player at a good price and figuring out the redundancies later.
  9. A Boy Named Seo wrote: Another deal without the slightest hint of a rumor preceding it. A good sign.
  10. The DH league makes it easier to carry crap too. You'll never need Lagares as a pinch-hitter
  11. Well, you could have money to spend but still feel that thw reliever market is going to crash and you'll get a better del later
  12. a shocker to pretty much nobody, this has been the plan for over a year pending approval by insurance company i'm sure.
  13. =smg58 post_id=729 time=1546827250 user_id=62] Seems like more of a salary dump than anything else, but he just never distinguished himself enough to be missed.
  14. I like the deal in a vacuum, but not the implication that we are "set" in the outfield now.
  15. i'd be in for ESPN i made the mistake of joining a yahoo league last year and then realized "i never check yahoo"
  16. NY's population is 8.6 million people. Boston has a population of 685,000. NY outnumbers Boston by 8 million people. what is the "fan base" though? New York is split between 2 teams and has Philly fans to the south/southwest, Boston has all of New England?
  17. With the move from Queens to Dirty Jerzy id be shocked if i make it to more than 1 game this year. The over/under is probably at 1/2 a game
  18. If Minaya is pessimistic about Cespedes' health I dont see why we shouldnt be too. Now act like a big market team and sign someone! Pretend he isn't here and if he comes back consider the "4 guys for 3 spots" a nice problem to have.
  19. "less piped in noise" would improve ANY stadium
  20. Benjamin Grimm wrote: Maybe he took that in the mirror. The flower looks like it's been reversed. I always assumed that.
  21. Benjamin Grimm wrote: Its location. I'd put it on the shore of the East River somewhere. 81 home games, 100+ events a year causing additional traffic in Manhattan?
  22. Well, this was unexpected!
  23. "Internally, we would argue that we're the favorites in the division right now," Van Wagenen told the team's SNY network. Translation - "we're done spending money" ? very disappointing.
  24. Frayed Knot wrote: Benjamin Grimm wrote: Reportedly two years, $19 million. A bigger and longer package than I expected he'd get and a BIG risk considering his age (32 next August), position, size (claims 6' 1" - 245), and injury history (avg of 92 Games/331 ABs played from 2011-18). He's reached 450 PAs just twice in his career [2015, 16], sports a below average walk rate [.044 career], and there's that 76 OPS+ he rung up for 2014-15 combined that I'd hate to see repeat itself in Queens. On the other hand, the upside is pretty decent too [118 OPS+ for 2017-18] so this could wind up as an Asdrubal-like good signing, or a total disaster, or anywhere in between. I mean, I guess you could argue that all deals have that kind of risk/reward potential, but the extremes seem to be more in play on this one as compared to most. I like the signing, its hard to imagine 2 years 19 million as a TOTAL disaster - "total disasters" require a 3 year minimum commitment!
  25. Mets Willets Point wrote: Edgy MD wrote: Rather than assign one guy the eighth and one the ninth, I prefer a team that looks to just one of those guys as needed for both the eighth and the ninth, with the other guy backing him up for an emergency, and if they're in another situation that needs a lockdown the next night, the other guy gets the call. It wouldn't work out this way, of course, but I'd prefer each guy get 40 appearances of two innings each, rather than 80 appearances of one inning each. It's probably less taxing and leaves the manager with an ace up his sleeve. Edgy for manager. seconded.
