  1. The Dodgers are making a few bets here, including that the continued growth of revenues will make this less painful down the road. Think about what the largest contract ever was 20 years ago and then put it on today's payroll - doesn't look quite as big anymore does it? Yes inflation over time is real - but the growth of MLB revenues have likely far outpaced it.
  2. More than I would have given him, even if it's Steve's money. There have been enough successful players from the Japanese leagues that they can be properly evaluated even if not to the same degree of certainty as an MLB player. The Korean league feels like a black hole though - would you give the best American college player that kind of money (if you could?) Because the risk seems about the same here.

My concern is that the Yankees overseas cachet will tilt the balance towards them. I find myself hoping that Yamamoto really wants to be teammates with Kodai Senga! Perhaps they can fire Mendoza for having Yankee stench and offer to replace him with a Japanese-speaking manager. I know just the guy!

Competitive athletes may need a little longer than this to heal fully before they're cleared to return to their sport. Your provider will tell you when you can resume physical activities. Nine months would put us in mid-September. So yeah, unless he heals quickly, this looks like he'll miss the 2024 season. Paging Aaron Rodgers' doctor
  5. =metirish post_id=142356 time=1701884710 user_id=72] Wow , I guess he calls his people to get the private jet ready and just goes, must be nice
  6. That feels like a terrible package.
  7. Where have you been and more importantly where are your Knicks thoughts
  8. No reason to give up half the farm system here Uncle Stevie just needs to have a tampering-free conversation with Scott Boras. "Hey Scott, yeah Ohtani is too old for me to give him half a billion dollars, but if a guy hit free agency who was younger and worth that, I'd have no problem spending it"
  9. =kcmets post_id=140717 time=1699407189 user_id=53] Has a formal introduction been announced yet? Ya know, like with cameras, mics and silly organizational yibber yabber?
  10. Edgy MD wrote: Tim Anderson — whose season was so disastrous that it really made me appreciate Jeff McNeil's 2023 — has had his option unsurprisingly declined by the White Sox. He's had some really good times, but it's going to be a hard time finding a major-league deal after his season's highlight was landing on the wrong side of a brawl with José Ramirez in which most of the league took Ramirez' side, despite the video evidence being ambiguous. Anderson was one of the worst hitters in MLB last year on top of having a history of being a less than model employee. Couldn't pass harder on a guy.
  11. =Gwreck post_id=140588 time=1699296949 user_id=56] Ottavino declined his option for 2024 with the Mets and is a free agent.
  12. Edgy MD wrote: I don't know. It just seems the Cubs fans have some deliriously nasty things to express about the Cards and Brewers, even if the day's opponents are the Angels or Rockies or something. I distinctly remember leaving the Todd Pratt homerun game down the giant old ramps at Shea, the crowd was chanting "Yankees Suck" - that's not a unique feature of the Cubs either
  13. Edgy MD wrote: Cubs fans are unique in that, instead of having a singular and all-consuming arch rivalry, they actually viscerally hate three teams, don't they? Why is that unique? I hate the Braves, Phillies, and Nationals. I'm sure older Mets fans hate the Cardinals too
  14. Johnny Lunchbucket wrote: Yankee coach for last several years, been getting manager interviews for last two years. I'm personally glad we didn;t hire Counsell who's such a wisconnsin guy he'd only be here for the $$ Personally I think we'd be just as well off with Buck. Seriously, I would have stuck with Buck Yup.
  15. Seattle to me is the craziest team on that list - a team that AT THE SAME TIME employed Randy Johnson, Ken Griffey jr, Alex Rodriguez, and Edgar Martinez. At least they were a playoff team, but they rank ahead of even the Ohtani/Trout Angels as far as wasting talent without a championship goes.
  16. I haven't listened to him since he was on WFAN so whatever, I guess he hasn't changed at all
  17. More "sportswashing" as it was put in the Saudi soccer thread. Disappointed to see Bartolo involved.
  18. Baseball in mid November between two winter league teams? They should open the parking lot for free, sell seats for $5, and pray for beer sales.
  19. Edgy, why are we "overdue for an ump?" Are we overdue for an usher? A bat boy? A security guard? I don't think the hall of fame really needs an umpire. Heck, the guy who invented the electronic strike zone has made a greater contribution to the game! None of these candidates really move the needle for me.
  20. I was talking more about this the other day with some friends, the comedic potential really never ceases AND they could even fire him on the field during the 7th inning stretch one night. If the Mets can't win 90 games for 400 million dollars they can at least entertain us
  21. Edgy MD wrote: Does Kepner back up his assertions with any quotes supporting the notion that Jeter's mind is highly respected in the industry? That colleagues and rivals were befuddled by his tenure ending? It's not like somebody has moved in to hire him since. Anyhow, that's a courageous jump by Ms. Ng. Nope, that paragraph is the only part about Jeter. As I'm sure you know by now from 25 years of listening to Yankees fans, evidence of Jeter's "greatness" is usually considered unnecessary
  22. Ng's departure — about 20 months after Derek Jeter's departure as the team's chief executive — raises questions about Sherman's vision for the organization. How does a franchise fail to retain not just one, but two highly respected baseball minds with championship pedigrees? It's a sobering and bewildering day for a team that should be building off its most encouraging season in decades. — Tyler Kepner, MLB senior writer From the athletic. Is Tyler trying to get himself a gift basket by smoking Jeter's knob? He has ZERO pedigree of success as an executive. Keep the story about Ng.
  23. Governor Cuomo left baseball after 1 season with a .383 OBP - no appreciation of the base on balls in 1950!
  24. What a hit! Retire his number yesterday!
  25. Lefty Specialist wrote: Boy, the post-game press conferences would be solid gold, wouldn't they? I really can't think of a more amusing candidate for Mets manager. I rarely watch press conferences unless I read that something happened worth going back to watch, but he would be must see the wouldn't he? Of course, the Wilpons still own SNY, so why would Cohen wanna give that to them?
