  1. we want Hernandez NOW!
  2. Edgy DC wrote:So when did they start allowing hard liquors to advertise on TV again anyhow?i don't know but i like it. i'd rather see comercials for something i'm actually going to buy.
  3. did anyone salvage the predictions thread from the old forum? i'd really like to see everyone's picks right now. i said something like 84-86 if i remember right.
  4. as a big gambler myself i'd tell you to take any settlement that wins you money right now.if the money odds were 1:1 or even 2:1 against you i'd probably play it out. but considering the odds are so bad for you for each game they finish over 88 its not worth the risk.
  5. a torrential downpour would be nice right now. anyone remember the time it rained so hard and fast that bobby v had to lead the team out onto the field to help with the tarp?
  6. I'll try to address the situations you mentioned one by one....1) Sending Jacobs back down (end of Aug.) A bad move IF they had made it, Jacobs is here and producing. Provided that he continues to see a good amount of time at 1B i can't criticize much.2) Not starting Castro sooner (all year.)I thought he had earned more time, but he wasn't really outhitting Piazza (though his defense is better with now almost equal hitting.) I can give them a pass here on the basis that 1B and 2B were blackholes offensively so they wanted what they hoped was a good bat from Piazza in the lineup as often as possible. I hope Castro gets as many starts as possible the rest of the way and is the starter going into next year barring the aquisition of someone better and not old/expensive.3) Not letting either Seo, Heilman, or both start over Ishii (late April and on.)I'm Ishii's biggest critic as we all know. There was no ecuse for giving him ANY starts at all. We knew what we'd get out of him which is a walk-fest followed by those walks coming around to score. Even if you were not convinced of Seo's ability (i was) or Heilamn's ability (i wasn't) going into the season there was no disadvantage to starting them as they probably couldn't perform much worse than Ishii historically has and did this year. This was the organization's worst roster decision this year.4) Sending down Diaz (May and on.) A bad move, but i partialy understand it. I would rather Diaz played every day than sat the bench in new york. and you can't trade Cameron (who i believe has great value in CENTER field but less value to us) until other teams see him play. Trading Cameron for help elsewhere would have made sense and Diaz could have then taken over. I don't know how seriously the Mets pursued this option though.5) Royce Ring in AAA with clearly ineffective veterans on the roster (all year? since we decided to cut bait with Dejean?)at whatever point it became clear that the guys we had stunk we should have promoted whatever good relievers we had in the minors instead of signing more bad veterans. bad moves.6) bad veterans at 2B over unproven youngsters.IIRC, the young 2Bmen (Hernandez, Lambin, and Keppinger) were all hurt at some point. Hernandez is a converted SS so it made sense to show him some time at 2B before promoting him. It also made some sense to show Cairo some time until he proved he couldn't get it done (which he has.) Matsui, based on his performance in Japan, deserved a shot until he got hurt. But his horrible numbers when he got hurt meant that he had no right to any job when he got back. I won't criticize them too heavily for not bringing up a young guy in april, may, or june, but it should have been done by NOW. Bring Hernandez up NOW and give him 20 starts the rest of the way and i will forgive the bad 2B moves this year.
  7. ]THIS MAY BE THE ONLY CHANCE TO GET A GOOD 2B MAN--if Cairo busts his hand four hours before the August 31 deadline, maybe they'll call up Hernandezhernandez could still replace one of our DL'd guys on a potential playoff roster even if he isnt on the roster before the 31st, no?Zvon- the fielder has the right to make a play on the ball, unfortunately the baserunner must stop or go around him. it was the proper call.
  8. i post insulting things all the time, i'm tame on this board compared to what i say elsewhere... that being said, Sal, you made so many good points about the "kids", why lead that off with the insult?
  9. Guzman has been SO bad that even if you thought he wouldn't have good year he's probably still way below your expectations. Not sure who else you'd pick at SS unless you want to count injuries and go with Nomar.I tried making a list but its so similiar to Valadius' that i won't bother. Just a few points:Curt Schilling- he pitched hurt, they won the world series, he missed half of this year. That was the plan, wasn't it? can't complain about him after gutting it out last october.Barry Bonds- are you a bust if you get hurt for the year? I guess i look at things from a roto perspective in that everyone knew he was gone for awhile so the expectations weren't as high.Adrian Beltre- a bust from the Mariners perspective for sure, but what non-mariner fan didn't see it coming?Brian Jordan, Raul Mondesi- they had to replace them, they stunk so bad.
  10. i like Castro but can he be an every day player? if we go into next year with him as the starter i'd like to have another capable catcher around, one whom we wouldn't mind giving 50 starts too...Castro looks like he might be one of those catchers who needs a day a week off minimum.
  11. Considering the potential free agents at 2B and the options currently on the team Hernandez is a good option to at least play this September and to have the job be his to lose next spring. I can't see him giving us less than what we've gotten there this year.As far as Jacobs goes with all the big hitters who play 1B i have to wonder if thats the spot to upgrade externally in the offseason. I'm not adverse to him finishing out this year at 1B and i hope he is on next year's roster, but to have Jacobs, Hernandez/Matsui/Cairo, and Castro all in the lineup with a still unproven Diaz or Cameron coming off an injury (and he's not GREAT to begin with) plus Floyd probably declining at least some if not getting hurt is not a great plan in my mind. Again though, I would much, much, much rather play Jacobs every day at 1B and/or Hernandez every day at 2B over a mediocre veteran like Cairo, Mientkiewicz, Matsui, Snow, Graffanino (someone mentioned him), or whoever else might be out there that you know will give you mediocrity at best.

    Standings

Delgado was a fool. The only thing making the Marlins as good as the Mets right now IS Delgado. If Delgado had come here and Seo had stayed up all year (or Heilman had been left in, or anything else happened to get friggin Ishii gone sooner) the Mets would probably be 3 or 4 up in the wildcard race.
  13. peak of trade value? what exactly are you going to get for him right now? whatever it is would have to clear waivers (or not be on a 40 at all)
  14. "ME Henderson thinks ME Henderson is the greatest"
  15. ]Otherwise, it's Operation Shutdown in LA.I hope we never have another player who would pull an "operation shutdown." i don't think we've had any recently except for rickey.
  16. ]OK, then, for anyone other than KC: are you guys (and gals) all thinking that the Kazmir deal no longer enters the Mets' thinking about Zambrano?I wish i could say that, but i've seen them do this before, play a guy not because he is the best option but because of who he once was or was traded for.I for one would bench a guy the day after aquiring him if it helped the team.
  17. i saw the zooperstars a few years ago with staten island yankees, they're pretty funny.
  18. ]It all reminds me about the complaints at Benitez picking the wrong day to blow saves. In all that time I never heard what the criteria were for a good time to blow one.against milwaukee in may is ok. against the braves twice in a week in september or against the yankees in the world series is not ok.Diaz didn't hustle to 2B last inning.Snow just tied it. 4th homer of the year geez.
  19. tommorow is an offday, why rest a starter today?wtf was that matsucki?? tag the lead runner!nice catch by beltran to stop boneheaded infield defense from costing us a run.
  20. fuck, wright hurt his foot too.today's lineup is bullshit, bad job willie.
  21. strikeouts is also a narrow measure on offense, as errors are on defenseI agree that strikeouts aren't much different from other outs in the majors. But when evaluating a prospect's numbers i hate to see lots of K's in the low minors- if you can't hit the mostly fastballs and changes there how the hell are you going to make contact in the majors? I'm pretty sure guys who K alot in the low minors are less successful in general than those who post similiar ba/obp/slg numbers but with their outs not coming from k's. maybe i'll check this out later i dont really want to start a research project right now and this would be a pretty big undertaking.
  22. ]Mets are trying to deal for Jamie Moyer this makes no sense.
  23. the team would be wise to spend his salary on new video equipment instead. go get abused by bobby v again mr genius.
  24. i'm suprised that nobody claimed him of waivers to block this trade.
  25. winning any of the last 5 (the mets lost them all) would have made the mets a wild card winner in '98 as well.
