Acted like a contender 2 years straight and missed twice I guess that's not really a good thing. Stroman/Wheeler was only a choice in the world of Freddy Coupon. Why not both? This year could have started with deGrom/Syndegaard/Wheeler/Stroman/Matz. Then when Syndergaard got hurt and Stroman opted out Pederson would still be there and we wouldnt have seen endless WachaWacha. If the Mets replace Wacha and Gsellman's 11 starts with Wheeler, they are pretty close to sniffing playoffs. Positives? Alonso was a 123 OPS+ in a bad season and he would have been our 6th best hitter by that measure behind Smith (169 - LF), Conforto (156 - RF), Nimmo (146 - CF), Cano (144 - 2B), McNeil (131 - LF/3B) JD Davis also provided positive hitting as well as ability to fake 3B and LF. Gimenez looked like he could avoid embarrassment with the bat at only 21 years old while playing good defense at SS. Small samples and all but he could be hte gem out of this season. Guillorme looks to maybe be part of the future as well, at least as a utility infielder. The offense looks set even though you need to to live with a subpar defense to get there. a competent catcher is the only real need.
