  1. everyone was saying it at the time, the Mets got him mid year while he was having an amazing season with the Orioles-- he had a 113 OPS+ as an Oriole (78 as a Met) that year (a mark which would have been the best of his career) .297/.350/.481 with the Orioles in 433 plate appearences including 16 homers, 22 doubles, 70 runs and 59 RBIs in 100 games. in 59 games as a Met that year (not counting postseason he came and hit .260/.321/.365 with only 4 homers, 8 doubles, 18 runs and 21 RBI in 59 games (211 PA) in the playoffs he proceeded to get 4 hits (all singles) in 33 at bats as well as 6 walks (none in the world series against the yankees, several against the then insanely wild Ankiel if i recall) he did not drive in a run. so after a great 100 games in baltimore he came here and didnt live up to expectations and then took an even bigger nosedive in that small sample size that everyone remembers- the playoffs
  2. how about Mike Bordick? Ordonez gets hurt and everyone is all like "wow this guy is great, he's the savior, he can hit" and he came here and laid an egg.
  3. ]Astros pitching--it's not all about Roger Clemens. when you've a got 1.87 ERA its kind of hard for everything not to be about you.
  4. kind of an unfair cover if you ask me, i'd bet that at least 50% of met fans will be happy to see the discount on the cheap seats and not give a rats ass about the seats they dont pay for anyway.
  5. ]The team did drop the price of low-end bronze and value tickets. For the 42 games that qualify as bronze and value, tickets drop from $12 to $9. thank you Fred and Jeff...i couldn't give a fuck what the other ones cost.
  6. i wasnt expecting either of Howe's teams to make the playoffs, but they still played even worse than (i) expected.
  7. thats pretty steep for a banner that spent 3 seasons at an opponents' stadium... if it had been at Shea i bet someone would bid $1000 or so...
  8. i think to be fair you need to give a guy two full years before you even start talking abot dismissing him. i didn't alike alot of what Randolph did this year but i felt he was still not as bad as Howe (i have nothing to prove this, just my own feelings.) Randolph deserves another go at it and with the roster as presently constituted i'd say 85 wins gets him another yeaer, under 75 gets him fired, and anything in-between depends on other factors (how the year ends, who gets hurt, etc)
  9. i'd say no...if only because pre-free agency players will have absurdly low contracts in comparison. i think "most valuable player" means the player who gave the most pure statistical value to his team, we should give GMs an award for having the guy with the best stats/cost ratio, not the players.
  10. you say that i'm the one who has personal problems with him, yet you've re-quoted that question 3 or 4 times now....
  11. ="Bret Sabermetric"]you would think that other teams would have snapped him up by now, They've tried. where have you seen this
  12. welcome back (again.) who are you rooting for now that boston has abandoned sanity?
  13. in the NL an extra bench player is likely to see more time than an extra pitcher is. 12 pitchers is usually a bad idea, though there are times where its a good idea (you have no offdays and a scheduled doubleheader coming up, you have a starter injured but not on the DL so you're keeping his replacement around)
  14. i dont think he was ever charged, and i hate the public's presumption that suspected rapists are guilty when most other suspects are innocent until proven guilty. unless Milledge is indicted for something i don't even need to hear about that junk
  15. before him John Franco would have barely qualified? i suppose it is still possible that they sign a mid-40's reliever this year or next but i'll admit it is a better than 50/50 shot that Julio Franco will be the last
  16. the backwards hat would be funny, but lets be honest, there is way too much money to be made off it for them to allow that :-\ i think Strawberry was the better hitter as a Met, though Piazza had a better career. i do not think his number should be retired. i think 7 1/2 years, especially with no world series rings, is just not enough. if you retire him you've got to retire some other guys first. if you're going to keep retired numbers truly special i don't think he was here long enough.
  17. with the book now closed on Piazza as a Met i must ask some serious questions: 1. was he the greatest Met of all time? 2. was he the greatest Met hitter of all time? 3. was he the greatest Met catcher of all time? 4. does he go into the HOF a Met? 5. should his number be retired at Shea Stadium? i'll refrain from answering until a few other people do.
  18. welcome aboard! do you work for Vanderlay Industries?
  19. i remember him, he wasn't bad....if he can still play C i'm sure the Mets will have room for him somewhere in the organization and i'm sure he'd get a callup if all goes well.
  20. julio franco is so old that we needed to start a sepearte thread for discussing it when there is already a julio franco thread....
  21. yesterday's values are irrelevant to today, new circumstances matter plenty as your plan must be re-evaluated based on them.
  22. There is no reason to stick to a plan if a better one comes along. The only plan the Mets need to have is to put the best possible team on the field. If that means dealing a guy who was yesterday untradeable (Reyes) because a better player (Tejada) is available then just do it. it doesn't have to fall in line with the old plan.
  23. sample size alone will explain away most "clutch" stats.
  24. ]Who, after the scene when he headlocked Zimmer, didnt have anything but ill will for Martinez the old man was LUCKY that pedro had enough respect to simply push him to the ground. if someone charged at me i'd clock them and pedro should have done just that. whatever "shield" being old/handicapped/sick/etc gives you is forfeit when you are clearly the aggressor
