Apparently none of the players non-tendered by other teams are centerfielders, in case Steve and Sandy need me to tell them that. Later Dahl can play center, if he ever manages to stay healthy
  2. Benjamin Grimm wrote: I thought so too. Shreve didn't seem to be part of the problem. Shreve was out of options. The Athletic's Tim Britton made a great point here as to why Robert Gsellman was retained and why it was a very good move - https://theathletic.com/2235979/2020/12/02/what-we-learned-about-the-mets-offseason-plans-from-the-non-tender-deadline/https://theathletic.com/2235979/2020/12/02/what-we-learned-about-the-mets-offseason-plans-from-the-non-tender-deadline/ Unlike the non-tendered Chasen Shreve in the bullpen, Gsellman has options remaining and can move back and forth between the majors and minors. A guy with a league-average ERA doing a lot of set-up and closing work, as Gsellman did in 2018 and 2019, is not ideal. A guy with a league-average ERA being your shuttle reliever is more of a luxury than you realize. Check out the cumulative ERA of optionable relievers who spent time in both the majors and minors for the Mets in each of the last three seasons: Cumulative ERA of optionable relievers [i edited this as it was originally a chart that didn't copy well] 2018 - 5.72 2019 - 6.68 2020 - 8.41 Gsellman is better than that, and it doesn't cost the Mets a lot to keep him. He also reported that Matz's and Heredia's one year deals aren't fully guaranteed until Opening Day.
  3. I "May" have an erection. Who is to say? If signing Trevor May is enough for an erection we had all better keep our distance when Realmuto or Springer signs...
  4. the Mets shitty pitching had nothing to do with that. neither did starters throwing a record low percentage of innings, which was driven by the pandemic and analytics, not DHs
  5. Lefty Specialist wrote: Edgy MD wrote: "To a person," all the GM candidates have said that "bringing Rojas back is the right thing to do." Sandy wants an NL DH. Boo. "Pitchers can't even bunt any more." Fuck that logic, Sandy. Yeah, but when he's talking about the Mets pitchers, he's spot on. The Mets are likely best positioned to take advantage of the DH. Certainly of the NL East teams.
  6. Edgy MD wrote: Them's two terrible ideas. I like like Cohen's idea, its like a "Rub the Madoff Scandal in Wilpon's Face Day" cloaked in celebration of Bonilla
  7. =batmagadanleadoff post_id=50931 time=1605732495 user_id=68] If Trump owned the Mets, he'd blame this incident on the Mariners and try to void the trade and get Kellenic back.
  8. I don't know why a guy like Tanaka would rehab the UCL and have it hamper his performance and market value for the rest of his career rather than biting the bullet and having the surgery. The success rate is pretty good. I don't know much else about him. But the UCL would concern me. same here. There is a price point where it is worth it, particularly if he is willing to be on himself and take a deal heavily laden with incentives for actually pitching or if he wants to take a 4 year deal where the Mets say "sign on the dotted line while we wheel you into surgery and basically pay for your rehab year 1"
  9. Benjamin Grimm wrote: It definitely should have been decided by now. What are they waiting for? waiting to depress salaries by not telling NL teams they have 15 starters to sign
  10. Johnny Lunchbucket wrote: Not looking at the numbers but is Rolen legit enough to require a hard look? I wouldn't be surprised if not, but from the blue and orange standpoint he's a must before they look at and sympathy-vote Wright down wright will have every tabloid NY vote and none anywhere else. he is legit and if you are just looking a offensive numbers you are missing that he was one of the great defensive thirdbasemen
  11. Benjamin Grimm wrote: I know I'm very opposed to Clemens and Bonds, and I'd be quite happy to see Schilling get passed over. As for the rest, I don't really know enough to have an opinion. The name "Dan Haren" is barely familiar to me. You don't remember Scott Rolen? good player for the Cardinals/Phillies and a bit of a Met-killer from what I remember
  12. Barry Bonds Roger Clemens Manny Ramirez Scott Rolen Curt Schilling Sammy Sosa they'll be combining this year's inductees with last year's cancelled ceremony - the more people to share Jeter's spotlight the better. the first year guys are really bad. i didnt even think about them for a second. I'm a little torn on Andruw Jones, but he did nothing after age 29 and Kenny Lofton/Jim Edmonds aren't in as Centerfielders who had better recent careers, so no.
  13. Lefty Specialist wrote: Boy, this thought has been in the back of my mind all along. Dom is a more complete player than Pete is. Pete has more power, but Dom's no slouch and hits for a much better average. The DH gave him the playing time he needed to show his stuff. If there's no DH in the NL they have an incredible logjam. And if you get Springer you have McNeil, Nimmo and Dom in LF. That's not going to work. I think they're going to have to trade their way out of this. I'd eat half or more of Cano's contract to move him, but it's Steve's money. McNeil could end up starting at 3B, but you don't need to trade guys away just because you have too many good players. depth is a GOOD thing
  14. Edgy MD wrote: Lindor's not a free agent. Bauer can eat my ass. Bauer can help us win a World Series now and he can eat your ass later.
  15. Frayed Knot wrote: ALL spending has a limit. It's just that not all limits are as limiting as others. Where this winter puts the Mets in at least a theoretical advantage is that most clubs look to be tapped out on their budgets on account of Covid losses while uncle Stevie doesn't have that around his neck -- well, as a minority partner, he likely had to kick some money into the pot to cover shortfalls but not to the degree that other owners did in 2020 -- so he can be spending while others tighten. That shouldn't mean it's a good time to start tossing it around like a drunken sailor on shore leave, but it's certainly a better position to be in than one with loans, Madoff clawbacks, and other deficits over your head. Ok, but what is the limit? maybe there is a theoretical limit but that limit could be 50 million higher than the Dodgers and therefore not constitute any sort of practical limit. The only "issue" with Lindor is the talent cost to acquire him
  16. =kcmets post_id=50410 time=1605109379 user_id=53] Been watching a little at a time, it's kinda surreal!?! Old-timers Day!!
  17. =Centerfield post_id=50409 time=1605108397 user_id=65] I read someplace that the Mets have about $76-$78 million before the luxury tax. If you figure that Cohen might want to stay under the tax his first year, there's still room to do this: 1. Springer $25M AAV. 2. Stroman $17M AAV 3. Hendricks $10M AAV 4. Hand $7M AAV 5. McCann $10M AAV Total: $69M
  18. =Centerfield post_id=50397 time=1605096830 user_id=65] And even as rich as Cohen is, there is a limit.
  19. fine, but can we still take Carrasco's contract off their hands? its nice have an owner whose money we can pretend to spend!
  20. Benjamin Grimm wrote: John Harper suggests that the Mets deal Giminez, Rosario, and Davis for Lindor. His position seems to be that a deal that doesn't require the Mets giving up Smith or Alonso is worth doing. I'd rather give up Smith than BOTH Rosario and Giminez - If they both hit, one could slide to 2B at some point even with Lindor here. Even if Alonso/Smith both hit, its a liability in left field unless the Mets have "insider knowledge" that the DH is here to stay. Carlos Carrasco didn't have a great short year and is owed 12 million each of the next 2 years. Does Cleveland need finincial relief in this environment? How about Carrasco and Lindor for Smith, Rosario, and a C-level prospect?
  21. Ryan Church would be safe here! Cohen was asked on twitter (likely by depressed Jets fans) if he wanted to buy a football team too: "Nope , I run clinics treating vets for PTSD and traumatic brain injury .I'm on the other side of the concussion/ football discussion"
  22. A Boy Named Seo wrote: So... who's the GM front-runner? I hear Betsy Davos will need a job soon?
  23. =batmagadanleadoff post_id=50101 time=1604697675 user_id=68] =LWFS post_id=50093 time=1604695441 user_id=84] I think I trust Sandy to rebuild a team from scratch more than I trust BVW to half-heartedly implement Cohen/Sandy's thing
  24. =vtmet7 post_id=49882 time=1604540620 user_id=80] don't know if it has been mentioned or not, but supposedly the votes against Cohen came from: White Sox (no surprise), D'Backs, Reds and Arte Moreno's Anaheim California Angels of Los Angeles
  25. Edgy MD wrote: Key part of the establishment of North Shore-Long Island Jewish Hospital, and is the reason the Katz Women's Hospital gets $$ every time the Mets win, and hopefully that continues. my first child was born there! they were great.
