  1. SeaWolf- although i do believe that Rice belongs in the HOF, you have to be careful with arguments like that one because not every player's career starts and ends at the same time and it is entirely possible that if you pick a dozen other outfielders whose careers partially overlapped into that period you could find a better 12 year span for each of them...i'm not saying it would happen in this case but its the reason i dont like those arguments...it like that book that tries to build a team for each decade, it doesnt tell me much because a guy could have been dominant from 1975-1985 and he'd be on neither the 70's team nor the 80's team.
  2. ]Remember: hockey rinks and basketball courts have only been standardized sizes relatively recently. i cant speak for hockey but NBA basketball courts have been standardized since at least the late '60's ]Different, but of course you're going to get players who have the right skills for your park. well, i wouldnt trust in all GMs to look into park factors and avoid the temptation of that .300 hitter who, whoops, played last year in lefty-heaven when his park is lefty-hell
  3. i put matsui ahead of cairo because matsui hurt the team for a shorter amount of time and slightly less per AB, cairo was last to me but #25-29 on my list are not things i care to argue with much passion, if you want to flip them around i wouldnt care really
  4. Bret Sabermetric wrote: ="metsmarathon"]why is it most players perform better at home as compared to on the road? This is actually an interesting and complex question worthy of its own thread. living at home instead of in a hotel room may help with their sleep at the very least. i would HOPE that part of the answer is somewhere along the lines of "GMs know how their ballpark plays for different types of hitters and they aquire those guys who typically do well there"

And they complain when Bonilla wears earplugs.... And they wonder why Johnny Damon doesn't give a flying fuck about Red Sox fans and switches teams... because he sucks and it was a bad decision to give him all that money i dont complain, he's free to wear earmuffs for all i care i dont wonder that either, its his life and anyone who says they wouldn't take the huge payday themself is a liar.

  8. ]as "booing" and "second-base" have nothing in common, other than Matsui. that a big thing to have in common. boooo matsui boooo
  9. Looper > Baez imo. though thats not an argument i care to bothergetting into.
  10. this would be a LEAP in the wrong direction.
  11. i know this has nothing to do with real life but its just a thought... i simulated 2005-2008 with the Mets several dozen times in Baseball Mogul 2006, in those seasons in which i started Reyes in 2005 his 2007 and 2008 numbers essentially resembled the numbers he put up this past year, that is he never got any better. however, in 4 simulations i left him in AA for 2005 and AAA for 2006 before starting him in 2007 and 2008...his average OBP in those seasons was about .355... yes i know its just a game... but it led me to ask a serious question, assuming that getting on base is a learnable skill, is it better learned at a younger age in the minors or in the majors?
  12. he should have gone beaning people not walking them, but this was 5 years ago and hampton, piazza, and clemens are no longer in NY so i don't care much anymore
  13. on WFAN mike and the maddog were discussing a "rumored" deal that sent Seo and Heilman to TB for baez! worse yet they were endorsing the deal! i would not trade EITHER of those players for Baez much less both, are Mike and the dog completely crazy? also, they rumored tejada to boston for ramirez and clement, a nice salary dump fopr boston if its true
  14. LMAO @ "Mr. Good Schools" Clemens isn't the only one who can't tell the ball apart from other equipment, anyone remember a certain Jets game and Testaverde's helmet crossing the plane of the endzone?
  15. i have no idea how Cairo, regardless of your opinion of mediocre full-timers vs. good part timers, gets anywhere on anyone's list. he wasn't mediocre, he was TERRIBLE, one of the worst hitters in the entire major leagues and his contribution to the team was a negative one.
  16. i'm cool with FK's list except for the same benson/zambrano issue i mentioned earlier
  17. i want numbers, not words, can anyone find the park factors split for lefties and righties since the place opened?
  18. i don't think marlon anderson belongs so high, your rankins seem otherwise reasonable to me
  19. OlerudOwned/Yancy, i'm wondering why you both have Benson so far ahead of Zambrano after very similiar seasons?
  20. Edgy DC wrote: Cy Young winners play more than 40% of a season. which is why i ranked Seo 7th and not 1st, where he clearly would have been if he'd played more at that rate of production
  21. Seo had an ERA+ of 162, Reyes had an OPS+ of 80, thats the difference between a cy young winner and a bench jockey....the extra playing time wasnt enough for me to justify reyes being higher, and i thought of putting him lower.
  22. I started with a list sorted by OPS+/ERA+, i adjusted up or down based on playing time...guys who played well are mostly higher than those who didn't, regardless of how often they played. a few things i was unhappy with or still debating: -- reyes- should he be even lower based on his 80 ops+? -- benson & zambrano- should a full year of mediocrity get them above the relievers, diaz, and jacobs? -- cameron- his hitting puts him 3rd in OPS+, i'm not sure if that ABs difference should let beltran sneak ahead of him -- ishii & cairo- do they deserve any credit at all considering they stunk so badly for so long? i was tempted to bump them entirely for guys who got a few at bats or a few innings, but i felt it made more of a statement to put them where i did, purposely last, than to forget them. 1 David Wright 2 Pedro Martinez 3 Cliff Floyd 4 Tom Glavine 5 Carlos Beltran 6 Mike Cameron 7 Jae Weong Seo 8 Jose Reyes 9 Mike Piazza 10 Roberto Hernandez 11 Aaron Heilman 12 Mike Jacobs 13 Victor Diaz 14 Kris Benson 15 Victor Zambrano 16 Braden Looper 17 Doug Mientkiewicz 18 Ramon Castro 19 Steve Trachsel 20 Marlon Anderson 21 Dae-Sung Koo 22 Chris Woodward 23 Jose Offerman 24 Kaz Matsui 25 Mike Dejean 26 Danny Graves 27 Juan Padilla 28 Heath Bell 29 Kaz Ishii 30 Miguel Cairo
  23. frayed, i cant find the numbers anywhere, where have u seen them?
  24. the difference is that the Mets have a budget (even if it is a high one) as of where the yankees don't care if their payroll reaches 250 million
  25. ]The Padres' lineup is a little too lefthanded right now i believe that park favors lefties, though i'm not sure
