  2. Edgy MD wrote: Yeah, I figure this is an attempt to use Covid as an excuse to avoid something that's perhaps less-than-desireable to owners and management. long extra inning games are not desirable to anyone other than diehard baseball fans. I'm sure the owners would like to turn the stadium lights off and stop paying the hourly workers, the management would like to avoid figuring out which Triple A pitchers need to get on a plane ASAP, the players would prefer not to work extra innings for the same money and still have to wake up and do it again tomorrow. The broadcasters want to go home as do 75% of the fans including all the ones who brought their kids. the network wants to move on to it's next scheduled programming. Maybe the teenagers working a summer job at the ballpark like the overtime, but most of the other employees also want to get home.
  3. Benjamin Grimm wrote: I'm happier about the end of the extra-inning baserunner and the seven-inning games than I am upset about the DH. (And I really hate the DH.) Ditto. I don't like the DH but I hate those two rules even more - ESPECIALLY the extra inning baserunner.
  4. Did anyone have March 10th in the pool? I had "Putin installs Puppet Government in Kyiv" ahead of "Billionaires and Millionaires come to their senses"

  7. Yeah, one year and lots of CohenCash. great!
  8. Benjamin Grimm wrote: The Astros garbage pail scandal is going to weigh heavily on Beltran. He was getting in by his 2nd or 3rd year before that, I'd think. Howard? I wouldn't consider him for half a second.
  9. Edgy MD wrote: It's hard to imagine a year later, but had Curt Schilling just been gracious last year, let a publicist write his response for him, and enjoyed the last-year-on-the-ballot-bump, there's a real good chance that he'd've been up all last night celebrating and he'd be fielding congratulatory calls from all over over the country. Instead, by spitting in the direction of even the writers who supported him, he made himself toxic. The only guy crashing harder than him was Omar Vizquel, who is being investigated for sexually harassing a child. Also worth looking at who is trending forward — Scott Rolen, Billy Wagner, Andruw Jones, Todd Helton. Keeping it classy has its benefits. A lot of their votes probably came from the same voters who dropped Vizquel and Schilling. Check out Prince Fielder and Justin Morneau. One year and onto the heap. I think that Curt Schilling doesn't WANT the writers to vote for him, because he doesn't want to thank them. He wants to get put in the hall a few years from now by a committee of his fellow former players. The ballot get interesting next year. would like to see guys like Rolen get their due. It feels like we finally got past the 'steroid log jam' here where very worthy players like Jim Edmonds fell off without any consideration while we were busy arguing about the roid heads.
  10. Edgy MD wrote: Izzy II was a sidewinder. Cone, like Andy Hassler, was a sometimes sidearmer. Also worth distinguishing the guys bringing it from 3:00 or 9:00 from the real knuckle draggers. Bradford was a legit submariner from what i remember.
  11. =kcmets post_id=85163 time=1643230912 user_id=53] No, no, no and no.
  12. Cora follows the pattern here - he is a very experienced third base coach. Seems almost strange that the Mets have a plan amd are sticking to it
  13. As long as the season starts on time I dont really care how they got there and I probably wont notice the lack of charter at least until after the Superbowl
  14. =Ceetar post_id=83533 time=1640219835 user_id=102] timing is part of the negotiation. As we get closer to Spring Training, the players position gets stronger because they gain the ability to threaten to strike.
  15. Edgy MD wrote: The Dodgers appear to have a policy of not retiring the number of non-Hall of Famers. As such, Hodges' 14 has been in circulation all of these years, and if it finally gets mothballed, I imagine it will be in his honor, but not Scoscia's. It's kind of silly, I think, to farm out how you intend to honor your team's legacies to the Hall of Fame decision makers, but when it comes to retired numbers, there are as many opinions as there are people. Contrast to the Yankees policy of retiring your number if you were a bat boy for AT LEAST three seasons.
  16. I understand taking another look at guys like O'Neill who played in the negro leagues but it is so dumb to spend 15 years on a ballot deciding that Kaat and Oliva are NOT hall of famers just so a a handful of their buddies can show them in now.
  17. Maris you can at least say has the FAME piece down. He is more famous than the test by a mile. I had never heard of Billy Pierce until seeing his name here.
  18. March 1st
  19. With regard to revenue sharing, if I were the union I would want it gone. If the Pitates owner cant remain profitable without the dollars, he will hopefully sell to someone who can - or better still for the players, sell to a rich guy willing to spend on salaries for his own fun not profit.
  20. Edgy MD wrote: I guess that makes sense. Ending the draft entirely would do that also, but I imagine that's not what the union wants. Nope. Unlike NFL/NBA where drafted players immediately brcome dues paying union members (and even there they still dont fully align), the interests of the MLBPA differ from the interests of 90% of draftees/minor leaguers.
  21. Johnny Lunchbucket wrote: Yeah I think the leftover infielders go in trades for some relief pitching or something. McNeil winds up in San Diego and Davis in Frisco. Write it down What do you think the deal is with McNeil that he might be expendable? Not as good as his all-star stats suggest? Redundant? A personality issue? Maybe the Mets figger he walks first chance he gets? Maybe the Mets have given up on the small market mentality that everyone getting paid well needs to be starter or else "oh shit ship that salary somewhere"! McNeil as a backup if he loses the competition at 2B is ok with me! yay depth! Smith is the one I would trade as without a starting job he provides depth at less positions than McNeil.
  22. The Mets dont need an outfielder right now. Unless we are talking about upgrading the 4th guy for the inevitable injury
  23. Spend that money Steve! Luxury tax thresholds are for suckers named 'Wilpon'
  24. Edgy MD wrote: Skimp on pitchers, but never skimp on cleaning staff. That's my motto. So, all this hot stove action happening now, I'm guessing, is because precedent suggests players under contract will still get paid in part or whole after a work stoppage, and players not under contract won't? Is that correct? That could be part of it , but also many veterans want the certainty. The labor issue might be done in a month or they might drag into the summer - these guys and their families want to know where to rent, where to enroll the kids in school
  25. =batmagadanleadoff post_id=81908 time=1638149380 user_id=68] Why wouldn't Scherzer be worth $40M/yr? I guess if Scherzer signs with the Mets for that amount, ol' Steve Cohen will only have some 13 or 14 billion dollars, less $40M leftover to sign other players. Woe is him. (Like it's my money and I personally hafta pay for Scherzer to play for the Mets.)
