  1. I like the deal on its own merits, but it makes me wonder if all these 1-2 year deals for 3-5 million (+5 million in arbitration to a Pelfrey) the Mets will hand out over the next 6 years could have just been minimum salary guys + Reyes instead.
  2. Looks like window dressing, Mets just shuffling the cards and hoping nobody notices they still arent dealing any...
  3. ...Watch your head on the doorway please! I wanted the Mets to get this guy 5 or 6 years ago... Is he still any good?
  4. Didn't Glavine and Maddux both have brothers who weren't very good but both found jobs via nepotism?
  5. Wow. This could be the first time I've seen the name of a guy who played for the Mets since I've become a fan (mid nineties) and not recognized it at all. So that's my new memory of Dale Thayer... I remember the day that Wilpon fucked up the organization enough that I just didn't care enough to watch most of August/September and I'll remember Thayer as the symbol of that. FUCK YOU, WILPON! (Those 3 words never get old)
  6. I took 600-699. How many does he have to play to make the contract ok? If the Mets had signed this deal and he gave them 4 "full years" (150 games each), 1 year with a significant DL stint (120 games) and 1 lost season (50 games) that about 770 games, and I think you can put that in a range of 750 to 800... 750+ games out of this contract and its a good deal, imo. I think he falls about a half-season short of that and gives them 675 games. The contract isn't a disaster but it isn't amazing either. If they win 1 championship with his help or make several playoff trips, it'll be worth it.
  7. I'm very down on Big Pelf, I'd deal him for a reliever that I thought could help or a longshot prospect that someone else has given up on but the Mets think may still pan out.
  8. I wouldn't make a deal like this. -the savings between Murphy and Dirks aren't going to be invested back in payroll, they'd go to the "we got fucked by Bernie fund," making the savings meaningless from a baseball perspective -I think its easier to find a mediocre outfielder than it is to find an infielder if needed (Murphy is harder to replace than Dirks.) -Murphy provides an option down the line at 3B if Wright gets dealt.

  10. I really hate to say it, but I don't think the Mets can contend before 2014. I'd deal Wright if there was a blue chip prospect coming back. Otherwise, I'd suck it up and lose with him.
  11. I remember the worst everyday player in the National League for a year or two there at the beginning, but he got so much better and he was always EXCITING! I can't root for him anymore though, and I hope the Marlins regret the deal as soon as this season!
  12. Fuck them too! Fuck everybody this morning!
  13. Someone should go ask the 'occupy wall street' people to relocate to Citi Field's parking lot.. They can protest Bernie Madoff, Public stadium financing, and really just make themselves useful by harassing Wilpon.
  14. FUCK YOU, FREDDIE COUPON!
  15. I think believing that the Mets lost 70 million means believing in the standard MLB accounting tricks. The New York Mets Baseball team may have lost that, but I doubt this figure includes all the money made by SNY on television rights that they paid a dollar for and by a dozen other Wilpon/Katz owned entities that profit off the Mets but don't show up on the Mets' books.
  16. I didnt love it, but I liked it.
  17. And none of these guys even deserve discussion for the hall, but the point still remains that many are much better than Tony Womack... Do guys like Womack just have a friend who can get their name on the ballot for fun? who knows!

He was an injured rent-a-player, He served the Mets' purpose (cheap starter with upside beyond pricetag) and they served his (chance to start in a pitcher's park all year and prove value after injury.) Take care, Chris.
  19. If Reyes had gotten away as a baseball decision ("he's always hurt, so we wont go past 4 years") it would be another story, but lets face it, this was all about Freddie Coupon who lost his money to Uncle Bernie and wants to take ours at the same ridiculous prices he charged when he was spending twice as much on the product on the field. The Mets, from everything I've seen, never made a real offer... go fuck yourself Wilpom, I wont be at Citifield next year. At all.
  20. Hundley never saw the ballot either? There's some MET HATE going on!
  21. When did Alfonzo's age become a question? Just because he got fat and stopped playing well pretty quickly?
  22. I don't think anyone is going to make an argument for Alfonzo in the HOF, but I am not sure why he isn't on the ballot. I remember MVP chants for him one August/September ('98?), I doubt that can be said for Womack or Young, he KILLS those guys on "peak" value. Is there a criteria anywhere for the ballot? Who actually makes the decision as to which players appear on it?
  23. Holy Shit!! The forum loads on my blackberry???? Hope you've missed me because now that I figured that out I may be posting again (I'm never home anymore) My Ballot: Bagwell, Raines, Larkin, Trammell NO to Morris, for the reasons Vic elegantly stated. NO to Smith, I'm not ready to put a closer in. NO to Martinez, I haven't gotten over the DH thing, but I do want to keep him on the ballot to have more time to think about him. MAYBE to Walker, I want to look more closely at Walker's Road numbers when I can. The steroid era happened, but I don't know how we seperate who did what and how to deal with those we know did it. I'll pass on the "guilty" (mcgwire, palmiero) for now and ignore accusations against guys where nothing has been shown.
  24. Excellent and interesting article on the value of catchers ability to "frame" a pitch... http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=15093 Based on a different study that concluded a ball incorrectly called a strike was worth .13 runs on average, Jose Molina's ability to frame pitches (the study says this mostly results from a 'lack of movement' [head, body, and glove] while catching) has saved 73 runs since 2007. Jorge Posada's complete inability to do so has cost the Yankees 50 runs over that same time frame (Doumit and Laird were the only catchers worse) Thole saved 2.6 runs over parts of 2 years...so he's basically not having an affect, good or bad, in this area.
  25. congrats on your 602nd save, shmuck. I'm just posting because i'm watching Giants-Rams and the little halftime news blurb included the news that Rivera now holds the save record. Berman called him a hall of famer (ok, fine) but then went on to say "and a hall of fame person" what??? does ESPN not remember DEAD PEOPLE IN HIS ELECTRIFIED POOL??? I understand thats not the story today but could you at least gush over his career without calling him a great person?
