  1. Mayberry just doesn't deserve to play much i think he still deserves to play against lefties, whether that is worth a roster spot in this era of 4 man benches is a separate question, but he has value,
  2. ok next guessing game: number of days until the same fans who clamored for Conforto to be brought up start complaining that the Front Office brought up Conforto who "clearly wasn't ready"? it shouldn't take long.

Pirates got ripped off then i think?
  4. Actually they're not - at least not this season anyway where his .319 OBP clocks in at a few ticks above league average. What folks need to realize is that this isn't turn of the century baseball anymore when .340-ish OBPs were the norm. it is true that the league OBP is down, but 1) i think he'll finish under his current number 2) its higher for starting outfielders (.325 or so for outfielders)
  5. his OBPs are gag-worthy, sign me up for Zobrist instead. He doesnt play CF, doesnt play the infield, and is a huge downgrade from Granderson. Are we giving up on Cuddyer already? because thats the only spot he could fill and i dont think he's an upgrade even there if Cuddyer is at all healthy. I would pass on trading anything of much value for him as i cant see where he reasonably fits on the team.

Sometimes it's on the pitchers too, like when they have a 2 run lead and 4 outs to get. I would have signed up for 3 runs off Zimmerman in advance, wouldn't you? Oh and let's not forget the cardinal sin of giving the opposing pitcher the first out of the game on a bunt. That's bad basebalI no matter who you are.
  7. Edgy MD wrote: The Handoff Strategy of reliever use is too often a recipe for disaster. They should call it the Russian Roulette Strategy. yup. everyone out theer should becapable of 2+ innings, why go away from a guy who is pitching well? keep him out there and save the other guy for the next day. it all comes from the stupid Save rule and the consequent desire to have your anointed "closer" end 50 games instead of pitching 2 innings in 30 games and probably helping the team more.
  8. Edgy MD wrote: Matt Bowman goes out and pitches a two-hitter tonight against the Fresno Grizzlies. "Trade me for a glorified utility man, will you?!" Great timing for a trade while he's hot! I can't decide how much i like Zobrist. The super-utility thing ceryainly helps with our current predicament of not really agreeing which position we need the most help at and what to do with guys upon Wright's (hopeful) return. the bat seems like it would be a positive if not great. the biggest problem i have is that he is a free agent at year's end and i'm loathe to trade prospects for rental players. i guess someone outside our organizational top 10 would be fine, whoever that is at the moment. has Ynoa or Bowman had their Tommy John yet? if not, ship them out. all Mets pitchers seem to have one eventually.
  9. I guess on the good luck side we had Jeter, who managed to hit seventeen hoppers that somehow found the spaces between the fielders. Every f'n time. * Later * = I just remembered that I hadn't taken the obligatory shot at Jeter for a while. Thanks for teeing that one up for me. Coincidentally, 17-hoppers found their way past Jeter in the field at an equally remarkable rate!
  10. from EliasSports- always nice to see the Phillies hit a new low! In 20,223 games in Phillies franchise history, tonight is 1st time they lost a game 1-0 on a HR by the opposing pitcher
  11. Can't find the out of town thread, but Nate Karns for Tampa threw 5 shutout innings and homered for the only run of the game! Mets pitchers - you have been challenged!
  12. dgwphotography wrote: Lefty Specialist wrote: 8/1, after they strike out at the trade deadline. This was my thought, too. Can't wait to read the cynical articles from moron writers about how the Mets should have traded for Troy Tulowitzki, Joey Votto, & Babe Ruth but without giving up any of their prospects and how instead of doing so they are trying to hide their failures from the fans by bringing up Conforto.
  13. his usual L/R splits are actually reversed this year, making finding a platoon partner harder to justify right now. maybe we can find someone for a home-road platoon instead? these numbers are Dante Bichette like: Home: .280/.397/.547 Road: .191/.279/.284
  14. Lefty Specialist wrote: Criminals wear Yankee caps to blend in and disappear, because nobody thinks anything of someone wearing one. Doesn't wearing a Yankees cap just help you blend in with other criminals?

  16. Gwreck wrote: seawolf17 wrote: And Tuffy Rhodes was never heard from again. He hit about 500 home runs in Japan while also breaking the single-season home run record. I recall there were some incidents of very poor sportsmanship (or worse) when he got close to the record and was intentionally walked repeatedly. At least according to Baseball Reference, Rhodes was intentionally walked only 77 times in 7319 plate appearences in Japan, including only 2 times the year he hit 55 HRs and 11 times the year he hit 51. Barry Bonds, by contrast, was intentionally walked 688 times including 120 times in a season (35 times the year he set the record) Mark McGwire was intentionaly walked 28 times the year he set the record. Sadaharu Oh was intentionally walked far more often than Rhodes - 427 times over 11K PAs. 20 times the year he hit 55. So I'm not sure where this legend of "poor sportsmanship" comes from. he was walked much less than other prominent homerun hitters in either country including during the season in question.
  17. but who is more likely to give you better production for the next 2.5 months? Cuddyer/Tejada or Conforto/Reynolds? My money is on the latter Those are separate questiions, but i'd stick with Cuddyer at least for now. I've never been a Tejada fan but what has Reynolds shown really?
  18. they don't let kids into joints that don't sell food in SF or NY actually, at least if they are following the rules.
  19. Lucas Duda told Newsday: "I've seen it. I'm like a hippopotamus. They try to catch me in the wild when I'm doing stuff."
  20. a trade has been made!!! (we wish)

Even if one were given toward trading for SVS (and I'm not) there's no reason why the Mets should need to eat money on a Niese trade. His deal of $9 + $10, + $11/0.5 buyout for 2016-2018 is perfectly reasonable for a mid-rotation starter. not as reasonable as SvS's major league minimum though, and i think you see this a lot with midseason trades where the team's budgets may already be "locked in" for the year by ownership that they split the difference on the current year. Why no love for Van Slyke? he seems to me like a pretty decent player who has always been blocked by an outfield glut in Los Angelos. he is 28 years old but only has 580 PAs over the past 4 years. those 580 PAs add up to .257/.342/.465 (31 doubles, 24 homers, 61 walks). he looks like a player to me, certainly a better one than Conforto is right now. BR has his league/park-neutralized stats as the equivalent of .273/.360/.494 Why can't the Mets use this guy?

  23. Edgy MD wrote: Kind of surprised to see the Mets get out of town without the Niese-Ethier deal going down. Niese and Ethier certainly passed their auditions. And Cuddyer and Bolsinger certainly failed theirs. With Carlos Frias DL-bound, the Dodgies are looking hot to act. I don't like it, Ethier might not be the better player, is redundant with Granderson (a left-handed hitter who still owns righties but is better off on the bench vs lefties), and is owed alot more than Niese. I would go so far as to say that if the Dodgers tried to pass him through waivers I wouldnt even want to put a claim in given how much time and salary is left. Niese meanwhile is actually a decent bargain for a good 3rd/4th starter if you believe that is what he is. Ethier (33 years old) Contract: 2015:$18M 2016:$18M, 2017:$17.5M 2018:$17.5M club option ($2.5M buyout) 2018 salary guaranteed with 550 plate appearances in 2017 Niese (28 years old) Contract: 2015:$7M 2016:$9M, 2017:$10M club option ($0.5M buyout) 2018:$11M club option ($0.5M buyout)

Putting him on the 40 before he needs to be is a harm in and of itself as that would potentially create a logjam if we needed to promote someone else who wasnt on the 40 later. so if Nimmo is hitting and is either on the 40 or needs to be put there much sooner (i believe this offseason?) anyway, he makes more sense.
