  1. But [these daily fantasy leagues] certainly [do] resemble gambling in that most of the winning is done by a small handful of essentially professional players who are at liberty to play and bankroll multiple 'games' per day with the idea that one or more will hit. Meanwhile the minnows dipping their toes into the water, or the ones who are conned by the commercials that make it seem like every entrant is a winner, are merely funneling their dough to the sharks which makes both the pros and the ones running the games very happy. From Phil Mushnick's column: PBS’ “NewsHour” last week reported findings that 91 percent of DraftKings and FanDuel MLB pools are won by just 1.3 percent of its players. which is proof that it is a game of skill, not chance.

The Dodgers come to town Friday May 27th - Sunday May 29th, I'm guessing the Mets wanted July for weather purposes? too bad the September 11th game is in Atlanta, had they hosted the Braves they could have invited Steve Karsay to throw out the first pitch! September just seems too late for this kind of thing, what if the Mets suck and the house doesn't fill on a chilly night? why distract from a pennant race if there is one? the timing is good.
  3. Edgy MD wrote: Dear Mets, It's a few feet of snow out there and all, but if there's anything I can do to speed up this whole physical thing, let me know. Love, Edgy I'm waiting for the Megdal arrticle.... THE WILPONS ARE TEH SUCKIEST! WHY NOT WORK HARDER TO GET CESPEDES TO PHYSICAL???? THEY ARE TOO CHEAP!

The bench needs power: Tejada, Flores, de Aza, Lagares, Pawlecki. It would be nice to swap de Aza for a backup outfielder with pop. i love Granderson at leadoff, leadoff for me is purely about OBP. seeing lots of pitches is nice too. now that deAza is a 5th outfielder, i'd rather have the pop, but if he isnt playing great we could always call upon the raw raw raw power of Brandon Nimmo!
  5. well put by Frayed Knot. I dont like to worry about the $$$ in a contract because only they know what they can afford, when i evaluate a deal as a fan i look more at how many years it is. the Mets won big here.

Poured myself a Hellgate, by Blind Bat, a semi-local microbrew. It's not great, but it's in a growler that I've gotta get through soon, so what the heck. Albany will beat you AGAIN in the conference tournament finals. when it counts.
  8. batmagadanleadoff wrote: Smart move all around. Cespedes may be setting himself up for a monster deal if he has a star 2016 and the NL adopts the DH for 2017. If the Nats signed Cespedes, they'd work out their OF logjam for one season only, and would then likely have a star DH for the year after. Plus they're the team the Mets simply have to beat, it would appear. So the Mets improve and simultaneously strike a preemptive. yup. i wonder how much the DH thing helped this move for both sides? I really didnt want this guy long term but very happy to have him for a year, everyone wins!
  9. Centerfield wrote: And now reports are that he's reached out to the Yankees. Dude, he is totally playing up our rivals to make us jealous. I think he really likes us! Yoenis Cespedes is back in junior high
  10. I really don't want him back. I really think Conforto, Lagares, and Granderson are all better bets than him for 2016. He'll outplay 1 of them, but I don't even know which one and I don't want the Mets wasting 50 million+ dollars to stick the wrong guy on the bench. Heyward was the guy to get and the Mets blew that. I don't like the value of most of the other Free agent deals I've seen this winter.
  11. when I think failed prospects, Milledge/Escobar/Martinez are the ones that really come to mind, even ahead of "generation K"
  12. I am a little surprised I was able to play through the end of football season, I'm thinking that setting up all the projections and stuff for baseball at this point would be a huge waste of my time
  13. ...therefore the DH is bad for baseball. end of story.
  14. excluding the top 2 and the bottom 2 in each league seems like some real cherry-picking to make the data fit your desired outcome. you are excluding 8 of 30 data points! the DH seems proven to be spending-neutral at least over the past 2 years. perhaps a 30-year study would show differently, but i think that burden is on the guy who didn't just provide the data showing it to be even. one possible explanation is that the DH does cause AL teams to allocate more of their payroll towards a 9th position player while paying the bench guys (who pinch-hit less with no pitcher in the lineup) less. Should the union care if this is the case? are they HURTING some of their lower-paid players to help out thew guys making the big bucks? If this is true, I would say the union, really any union, should take no position on a rule that is payroll-neutral where abolishing/keeping it shifts money from some of their members to others. because by taking either side they are acting against the interests of some of their players.
  15. if Gordon regresses to his 2014 form this is a so-so deal. if he regresses to his 2011-2013 form, this is a horrible deal. if 2015 was the "real" Gordon its a good deal. overall, i'd say this is the right amount of risk/reward for the marlins
  16. Colon may be fat but I don't think he's complacent, he loves the game not just the paycheck.

  20. i'll do it if you need the team
  21. just got a "Get to Know Neil Walker" email from Mets.com, silly stuff but one tidbit that i thought was worth mentioning here: "who was your favorite baseball player growing up? - Ken Griffey jr." - that's how you get to 99% on the HOF ballot, this guy wasnt just a great player - he was a black guy who wore his hat backwards and was somehow seen as the coolest player by white kids from suburban Pennsylvania who probably saw at most a half dozen Mariners games a year. Go Griffey!
  22. Ceetar wrote: I think Scott Rolen is a Hall of Famer too, fwiw. he might be deserving, but i think he gets the "Jim Edmonds treatment" from the writers who have too many other guys to consider
  23. Benjamin Grimm wrote: No Chance: 1979 - 1982, Are we really ready to give up on Pete Falcone? Valentine as a manager gets you 1 year in there!
  24. If David Wright plays 3 more years at the level he's played so far he'll still probably fall a bit short i think. and hes hurtand in the post-steroid era declines are likely to come sooner. The best case scenario for his career at this point is probably to end up roughly equal to Scott Rolen (with slightly better offense and worse defense) Beltran is probably the Mets best shot at adding more years to the list, unless any of the current pitchers enjoy HOF careers, No Chance: 1964, 1979 - 1982, Best Shots: 1984 - a whole lot of close misses here: maybe the veterans committee someday helps out Strawberry or Keith Hernandez gets in as a broadcaster? 1990- Strawberry? David Cone? 1991 - Cone? 2009 - Beltran? Sheffield? Wright? 2010 - Beltran? Wright? 2011 - Beltran? Wright? 2012 - Wright? 2013 - Wright? 2014 - Wright? 2015 - Wright?
