  2. Voting for Monday night's win in Houston will close on Thursday morning. This will be the final Schaefer tally before September. I leave for vacation tomorrow evening and won't return until September 4. In the meantime, please keep starting the threads and posting your votes. I may or may not pop in from time to time but I won't be doing any vote tallying. Schaefer POTG 8/16/10 - Mets 3, Astros 1

  5. How would they know anything about fall baseball? There hasn't been a World Series in DC since the days of Walter Johnson.
  6. I think the lesser guy will be at least 90 per cent as good as Rodriguez, and the Mets will have another $17 million to spend on players who can provide more help than a relief pitcher can.
  7. I know. He's doing the right thing only because he sees no other options.
  8. Because having designated ninth-inning guys is a bad thing. Just because it's become standard, doesn't mean it's right. Jerry said in the paper today that the Mets will go with closer by committee, with the day's closer being determined by matchups. How isn't that good news? I hope it catches on!
  9. Wow... very hot doggy.
  10. Jon Heyman wrote: The Mets are looking into the possibility of voiding closer Francisco Rodriguez's contract, SI.com has learned. If the team is successful in doing so, they could save at least $17 million, and potentially more. They are looking into whether the contract, for $37 million over three years, can be voided based on Rodriguez injuring himself outside the course of play. Rodriguez suffered torn thumb ligaments during a fight with his girlfriend's father. Rodriguez has been charged with assault in the case. Rodriguez has apologized for the incident, but that might not get him off the hook. Team sources suggest the voiding of the contract is something that's on the table for team higher-ups. Rodriguez's salary is $11.5 million in 2010 and also in 2011. He has a $17.5 million vesting option for 2012 with a $3.5 million buyout. That option vests with 100 games finished in 2010 and 2011 combined or 55 games finished in '11, so it's unlikely the option would go into affect anyway. The players union might have a position on this though, as the Mets were only able to suspend Rodriguez initially for two games due to the power of the players union. General manager Omar Minaya said publicly the team didn't regret the contract. But perhaps behind the scenes, there are different thoughts being discussed.

  12. batmagadanleadoff wrote: According to the ESPN Sportscenter ticker crawl, the Mets will attempt to void the remainder of K-Rod's contract. No further news as of yet. Good for them! I wonder how much of a chance this has. Has it ever been attempted before? I seem to remember something with Jeff Kent a few years ago, but nothing ever came of it. (Was it something to do with a motorcycle? Or basketball? The details escape me.)
  13. I think that shot at Jon Niese was pretty gratuitous. Pearlman is The Bad Guys Win author, right? I remember that book was pretty sloppy, so this article doesn't surprise me.
  14. Yeah, the GM is no longer a "general" manager. The title should probably be Manager of Baseball Operations, or something like that.
  15. If a GM is fired in-season, I'm sure a replacement would be named immediately.

  21. Jeff Francoeur wrote: The more outs a player makes, the more likely that his next at bat will be a hit. We can't afford to miss out on Tejada's next hits now that the pennant race is heating up. Not a whole lot of wisdom there.
