  2. Sounds like he might be the guy to make room for Jason Bay.

If another team claims him, that organization would assume responsibility for keeping Emaus on the major league roster for the remainder of the season. The more likely scenario is Emaus clears waivers and is offered back to his former club, the Toronto Blue Jays, for $25,000 -- half the price the Mets paid to draft him. At that point, the Mets could work out a trade with Toronto in order to keep Emaus and place him in the minors. However, a team insider said it's "unlikely" the Mets would try to retain Emaus.
  4. Weather prognosis for tonight: Late Afternoon: Showers. High near 59. Northeast wind around 6 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. Tonight: Showers likely. Cloudy, with a low around 46. East wind between 7 and 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.
  5. Sorry it apparently didn't work out with Emaus, but I'm glad that Justin Turner will be getting a shot. I think he deserves it. (I say this without checking what he's done at Buffalo so far this year.)
  6. The thing I'm wondering now is if Emaus goes back to Toronto, or if the Blue Jays decline to buy him back, or if the Mets make some deal with the Jays to allow them to keep Emaus in Buffalo.
  7. Voting for all three games from this weekend's series in Atlanta will close on Wednesday, perhaps first thing in the morning. If you haven't voted yet, please try to do so today. 9. He's probably trying to get noticed by Lindsay Lohan.
  10. You're the one talking about "all the surplus" for a financially strapped team.
  11. Even if Frankie Rodriguez is the best closer in baseball (which I doubt, but let's assume that) I still think you could get a guy 80 per cent as good for about half the money. And I believe that it's better to do that, and use the savings to improve at another position.
  12. I'm sure Pagan is better than he's been for the first 16 games. The question, however, is whether he's good enough to be an everyday centerfielder for a team that hopes to be competitive.
  13. Not sure if this crappy little photo (above) will display, but it's of Mike Piazza Honda in Langhorne, PA. In the Philadelphia suburbs, I see a lot of cars with Mike Piazza's name on the license plate frames.

Gee can hang around while Young is on the shelf as far as I'm concerned and maybe longer. No one ever considered Gee a "high ceiling" guy as he was rising through the system but it wouldn't be the first time that predictions like that miss. Gee might be able to displace Capuano from the rotation, if he turns in a few more solid starts while Young is out. (And if Capuano does less well, of course.) Gee would have a much harder time bumping Niese, Pelfrey, or Dickey, obviously. Although Pelfrey should be more vulnerable than he probably is.

  18. Assuming the Braves don't score (big assumption, I know) I wonder how the bullpen will be used for the last three innings. My guess: Buchholz, Isringhausen, Rodriguez.
  19. Me neither. I think it's too quick a hook. I sense a bullpen implosion.
  20. Not often that you see a catcher get an unassisted double play. That was pretty sweet.
  21. If I was Dickey, I'd try to not feed into the "Hey look at the guy who uses three-syllable words" sideshow. I'd feel very self-conscious being known as the "one smart guy" in baseball, when 1) it's not true and 2) he may be bright, but I see no sign of "genius" in him.
