  2. I got a kick out of this, from Mark Simon's ESPN article about Eric Hillman: Hillman, who lives in Denver and turned 45 on Wednesday, is self-deprecating about his career and his height. He noted that the best thing about being 6-foot-10 is being the first to know that someone else is balding. He also jokes that his company's product is as natural as the tears Mets fans shed every time I pitched. But he did go on the message board at the popular fan site Ultimate Mets Database when a couple of posters criticized his pitching ability. Hillman even contacted one who claimed that Hillman ignored him when asked for an autograph, and the two spoke at length on the phone. Hillman wants Mets fans to remember him in a positive manner, like one fan he met at Mets Fantasy Camp a few years ago, who thanked him for bringing him into the Mets' dugout as a little kid.
  3. I can tell a fastball from a breaking ball, but that's about it. Like Ceetar, I can't tell a slider from a changeup. I used to try harder at this stuff; when I'd watch I'd try to think along with the pitcher and catcher regarding pitch selection and location, but I gave that up long ago. I now watch a lot more passively.
  4. Hu's total of 0.03 points yields him a zero, so he is not listed in the results, below.
  5. And while that's great, it's also an indicator of how transitory these feelings can be.
  6. She's almost as sexy as that old dude!
  7. The article in the Daily News mentioned that McDowell was traded to the Phillies in the "celebrated Lenny Dykstra deal." Huh? Celebrated by whom? Phillies fans? Or do the three people who wrote the article think that Dykstra came to the Mets in that deal? Either way, recent events show that the Mets traded away two jerks on that day in 1989.
  8. Too bad you can't make the background bright red for any row in your table where the projected number is at 55 or above.
  9. The Mets lost the evening I started this thread, but then reeled off six in a row. If they win their next two, I'm going to declare this thread an official success. "Mission Accomplished" banners and all. And even if the streak should stop at six, I'm so proud of myself I feel like Donald Trump!
  10. The Bonilla thing stems from 1999, which was during Phillips' reign. But you may be right about Saberhagen predating Phillips.
  11. It looks like this game may already be fully voted, but it will stay open for about another 24 hours nevertheless. Voting for Tuesday night's win in Washington will close on Friday morning. Schaefer POTG 4/26/11 - Mets 6, Nationals 4 Races for two of the three April awards are highly competitive, and we even have the possibility of a relief pitcher winning Pitcher of the Month for the first time ever. The April Schaefer awards are scheduled to be announced on Wednesday, May 4.

  14. You always have to question the sincerity of forced apologies. Is it "I'm sorry I did that" or "I regret the trouble I'm in"?
  15. Wow, that's strange. How could Oswalt leaving the team cause a tornado in Mississippi?
  16. The Schaefer Mets Player of the Week, for the week ending April 23, was Ike Davis, with 6.71 points.
  17. I was at [crossout:s3x42908]Shea[/crossout:s3x42908] Citi Field the other day, and we were eating our Shake Shack burgers before the game in the bullpen picnic area (where the Apple was, back in 2009) and a guy working in the bullpen got my attention and tossed me a used ball that he picked up from the ground. (The first time, in 40 years, that I ever got a free baseball at a game!) I noticed that the ball had Bud Selig's signature on it, but the word "PRACTICE" was printed, in small lettering, under the MLB logo. I wasn't aware that they did this, but I suppose it makes sense. It allows them to differentiate actual game-used balls from those used in the bullpen or in batting practice. I assume, then, that the PRACTICE ball has less value. I'm surprised that he'd go to the effort to get non-game balls. He must figure that quantity will make up for quality. Or something. I no longer really understand the collector market, if I ever did.
  18. LeiterWagnerFasterEtc awarded 10.1 points, and his votes were prorated as follows: pelfrey 3.86 davis 2.97 nickeas 0.89 beltran 0.69 wright 0.59 isringhausen 0.5 rodriguez 0.5
  19. I want part of the credit! I'm the one who started the Terry Collins Deathwatch thread!
  20. I haven't seen a paper All Star ballot in years. Are they still the punch-out variety? If that was the case, then it would be very difficult to change the players. If Daniel Murphy's name replaced Brad Emaus', the computer that reads the ballot would have to know if a hole punched in that position was from an old, Emaus ballot, or a new, Murphy ballot. And factor in that they'd have to potentially change the ballot multiple times, as players come and go from 30 different teams. So it's not like there would be Ballot 1, where the Mets 2B is Emaus, and Ballot 2, where it's Murphy. I agree that it would be better to leave the paper ballots as they are, but update the online form.
