  2. Keep that in mind for next year, when he's the Mets shortstop.
  3. Remember, they did a lot of winning in June, and as they headed to Puerto Rico for that series with the Marlins, they were riding fairly high and were definitely in the race. It wasn't until a few weeks later, when July fizzled, that it was clear they weren't going anywhere, and there was probably little point to firing Jerry and doing the interim thing with just two months left in a lost season.
  4. Are you saying his penis has a beard?
  5. A scuff of Astros? (No, Mike Scott, we haven't forgotten!)
  6. The Mets had those two eight-game winning streaks last year. If not for those, Jerry probably wouldn't have survived the season. As I recall, he was really on the ropes before the first of the two.

  10. Yes, Edgy's right. The idea was that 2002 was going to be an anomaly, and they'd make a quick rebound in 2003.
  11. I was very very cold that day. Bought a few hot chocolates, but they did little good. I remember thinking that the next day, somebody would show up at Shea and find 50,000 frozen corpses.
  12. I agree. This is the season to celebrate. It's hard to believe that, before long, the 1986 season will be in the first half of the Mets history.
  13. I think I can guess which will be number 163!
  14. Willets Point wrote: Huh? If he's mediocre, re-sign him, but if he's good get rid of him? Yup. A mediocre Jose Reyes will still be better than whoever would replace him, and he'd be affordable, where a Jose at the top of his game might be too expensive.
  15. Putting aside sentiment, it is likely that Jose's best years are behind him, and his biggest paychecks are ahead of him. If he has a mediocre season this year, and his price comes down, and the Mets can sign him for three years, or maybe four, then maybe he can stay. But if he has 20 triples, 10 homers, and wins a Gold Glove, he's gone.
  16. True. I certainly didn't mean to be quaint!
  17. Well, that's Allen Watson's experience, but it sounds like he actually had sex with Jimmy Carlino.
  18. I think there are some who are looking at him as a traitor. My own daughter, this morning, upon seeing Pedro as a Yankee on the back page of the Daily News, pounded the photo with her fist. I explained to her that the Mets didn't want Pedro, and the Yankees did, but emotions often trump rational thought. I have no ill feelings towards Pedro Feliciano, but I bet a lot of Mets fans do.
  19. This was a very rare case where I was watching a post-season game and I remember thinking at the time that Alou's reaction may have been as much to blame as Bartman himself. I think Moises may have set a tone for his teammates; he made it clear that something devastating had happened, and the Cubs went into panic mode. They seemed to be playing with a desperation that I'd later see with the 2007 Mets. I wonder if Alou had non-chalantly returned to his position, if things would have turned out differently? I remember posting my thoughts about the game on the CPF back when it happened. It would be interesting to go back and read it now, if not for the ezBoard meltdown. We're so much better off now, not having to rely on those stooges who don't even know how to take a backup.
  20. I really like the level of participation we get in the early days of the season. Hope it continues for a while. (A winning team would probably help quite a bit.) Anyway, it's almost time for the first Schaefer tallying of the new season. All three games played in Miami over the past weekend will close some time on Wednesday morning. If there's anyone with votes that they still intend to cast, please try to get them in today. 21. Allen Watson is getting a lot of UMDB hits the past couple of days, and I investigated to find out why. Here's what I found. Coach 'monster' By DYLAN BUTLER in Boston and DAN MANGAN in New York Last Updated: 4:00 AM, April 5, 2011 Posted: 3:09 AM, April 5, 2011 A famed New York Catholic hoops coach pleaded guilty yesterday to raping a 14-year-old boy during a trip to a Yankee doubleheader in Boston in 1976 -- as the victim revealed a $20 million lawsuit against the former Christ the King legend and the Diocese of Brooklyn. And right after Bob Oliva's guilty plea -- which netted him just five years' probation -- ex-Yankee and Met pitcher Allen Watson accused Oliva of victimizing him while Watson was a Christ the King HS student. "Bob Oliva is a monster," Watson, 40, told reporters after the Boston court hearing. "I'm ashamed to be a CK alumnus, especially ashamed of the people who defended and protected this monster. "Bob Oliva never touched me. He took me to prostitutes at 14, 15, 16 years old and watched me. He showed me pornography, and he masturbated. I was young, and I thought every coach did that," said Watson, who testified before the Boston grand jury that indicted Oliva. "I know there's more victims out there." Oliva, 66, who coached future NBA stars Lamar Odom and Jayson Williams, won 549 games at Christ the King in Middle Village, Queens. He retired months after being accused in 2009 of abusing Jimmy Carlino, whom he coached in a Catholic youth basketball league in the 1970s. In a searing victim-impact statement yesterday, Carlino said Oliva began molesting him at age 12 and continued doing so on more than 100 occasions over four years in Queens, other states and Quebec. The rape and pornography-dissemination charges Oliva pleaded to were for his attack on Carlino during a trip to Boston. "I lost my childhood to Bob Oliva," Carlino tearfully told a judge as Oliva watched stone-faced. "These days of teaching me basketball, playing stickball and softball, going to baseball games or taking me for rides in his cool car on trips were all for one reason: I was his sex toy or his sex trophy. "You are a sick, disgusting person . . . and a poor example of a human being who took advantage of your position and power in life." Oliva, now living in Myrtle Beach, SC, is barred from coaching and being around children under the age of 18 without supervision. He also was ordered to wear a GPS tracking device. He now faces Carlino's Queens Supreme Court civil lawsuit, filed Friday, which also names the Diocese of Brooklyn.

It seems lately that the pitchforks and torches are coming out too quickly whenever somebody makes a public mistake. Except it wasn't a mistake. It was intentional, and _that_ is why I support firing/demoting/reassigning the guy. Something that's intentional can also be a mistake.
