  1. Gary just said that the Mets are considering starting deGrom in Game 4 four of the NLDS on three days rest.
  2. Was he also known as "Vinegar Bend"?
  3. He's been eclipsed by Tejada. I never would have guessed that that would happen, but it has, at least for the time being. I think we can expect to see Ruben get more starts in the postseason than Wilmer does.
  4. If the Mets had held on to win Game 6 of the 1999 NLCS, Al Leiter would have started Game 7, which would have made him the only Mets pitcher ever to get starts on two consecutive days.
  5. I agree, but there are four off days coming up. Any momentum, good or bad, will dissipate over the next four days. Friday is a fresh start, for both teams. I'm not feeling overly optimistic right now about the series against the Dodgers, but it's entirely possible that the Mets will roar back to life by the end of the week.
  6. Jacob deGrom, today's starting pitcher, will also be the starting pitcher the next time the Mets play an official game, Friday's Division Series opener in Los Angeles. How often has something like this happened? The same pitcher starting two consecutive games? This will be the tenth time, but of the previous nine occurrences, eight have been because the pitcher who started the last game of one season started the first game of the next season. The only previous time the Mets had the same pitcher start two consecutive games in the same year was in 1973, when Tom Seaver started the final game of the season on October 1 and then pitched the first game on the NLCS in Cincinnati on October 6. The eight times when the pitcher who started the final game of the regular season was also the opening pitcher of the following season are: [list:2jez02wd]Jack Fisher (1965 and 1966) Tom Seaver (1968 and 1969; 1871 and 1972; 1975 and 1976) David Cone (1991 and 1992) Al Leiter (2000 and 2001) Mike Pelfrey (2010 and 2011) Bartolo Colon (2014 and 2015)[/list:u:2jez02wd]
  7. You may have missed it; Schaefer is going to continue next year but the voting method will be different. It may result in a further decline in participation, but it will also require a lot less of my time, which is a trade-off I'm willing to make. Look for an announcement this offseason. For those who don't vote but just read these monthly threads, the only difference you're likely to not is that there will no longer be all of those "Schaefer POTG" threads floating around in this forum.

Is there more turnover now than there was in the 70's and 80's? Or are rental players more common? Or is this just coincidence. This year the list is likely to be on the long side, although it may fall short of seven. I'm thinking Murphy, Cespedes, Colon, Johnson, and Clippard are the best bets. Uribe too, if he plays.

  11. Jeurys Familia, I should point out, just missed sweeping all six Reliever of the Month awards for 2015. After the game of September 29 had been tallied, Familia was still in the lead for September. The 0.33 points that Addison Reed earned on the final day of the month put himself over the top.

  18. Cliff Floyd: Yes. Michael Tucker: Yes! (I thought he'd be the last to be guessed. I have almost no memory at all of Michael Tucker.) Bob McClure and Jim McAndrew, no. J.C. Martin: Yes. 20. Murphy bumbled what would have been an inning-ended double-play grounder and Harper makes the Mets pay for it with a two-run homer.
  21. Millan, Stone, and Hershiser are all correct.
  22. Here's who we have so far. The numbers after each year indicate the number of players required to complete the list. 1969 (2) Ed Charles 1973 (2) Willie Mays 1986 (3) Ray Knight, Kevin Mitchell 1988 (1) 1999 (7) Bobby Bonilla, Shawon Dunston, John Olerud, 2000 (7) Mike Bordick, Matt Franco, Mike Hampton 2006 (7) Steve Trachsel
  23. I think that those of us who don't live in New York are much less aware of him.
