  1. I have to think this was part of his plan. It's like in politics, when there's an "October surprise."
  2. Fun fact! He actually managed to merit himself a Schaefer card, as Bench Player of the Month for June 2015.

  4. A team that loses its outfielder to an injury may find De Aza appealing, but of course such a team may also find better and cheaper options elsewhere. If things break right, he could be tradeable. And if things break wrong for the Mets, he could get a lot more playing time than we're currently expecting.
  5. Good point. I hadn't checked before this, but Rayburn has only played 14 big league games at first base in ten seasons.
  6. Well, it does frequently come to that. But I guess I'm conjecturing where Edgin might land on the depth chart.
  7. That would be nice. (I wonder who would get bumped upon his return?) If he does come back as expected, the Mets will have three lefties in their pen: Bastardo, Blevins, and Edgin. And potentially a fourth in Gilmartin.
  8. I'm thinking the same thing. Rayburn could be signed and room on the roster would have to be made for him somehow. Tejada may be the most expendable (Flores can certainly play shortstop in a pinch) but it's possible that they'll find that some other position player has more trade value. It seems that their bench is going to be Flores, Tejada, De Aza, Lagares, and Plawecki. Tejada does seem the more likely choice to go, unless they decide that De Aza is redundant and he gives his okay to a trade.

  10. But... do we know that Cespedes turned down an offer from Baltimore? It's possible that it was withdrawn while he was still considering it.
  11. I think that they're thinking that Flores will be the backup 1B, but as you say, there may be times when you need a 1B while Wright is unavailable and Flores is at 3B. I expect that d'Arnaud and Plawecki will play first base in spring training, but it remains to be seen if either of them become a viable choice.
  12. At least, until you decide that he's a vampire who needs a stake driven through his heart.

  14. I would have done it on Sunday, the 31st. If I remember correctly, they retired Tom Seaver's number on July 41.
  15. John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: 27 sounds like a lot of pitching changes to me. 26 would be better, 25 best. Yeah, you're probably right that that's how it would play out. I'd like to see those two additional roster spots go to position players, and maybe they would, at first, but inevitably it would probably lead to a 14-man pitching staff. UGH!
  16. In 1986 (and maybe a year or two before or after that) teams had the option to carry only 24 men, and every team did it for the entire season, including the postseason.
  17. That's the deal I would like. A year-round 27-man roster and the total elimination of the DH. I don't know that it's ever been proposed by the people who have the actual power to make things happen, but it has been kicked around by fans and sportswriters at least a little bit.
  18. Also be aware that "story of the year", while a valid criteria, isn't the only criteria to use. The only instruction is to vote for the cover you like best, for whatever reason.
  19. GROUP TWO CHAMPION Winner of Round 1.2.7 Winner of Round 2.2.4 Winner of Round 3.2.2 Winner of Round 4.2.1 Winner of Round 5.0.1 CON4TO! New York Daily News, July 26, 2015 Michael Conforto goes 4 for 4 and scores 4 runs in a 15-2 Mets win over the Dodgers at Citi Field. GROUP THREE CHAMPION Winner of Round 1.3.7 Winner of Round 2.3.3 Winner of Round 3.3.1 Winner of Round 4.3.1 Winner of Round 5.0.2 YES-PEDES New York Daily News, September 10, 2015 Helped by an 8th-inning two-run homer by Yoenis Cespedes, the Mets beat the Nationals 5-3 in Washington, completing a key September series sweep.
  20. Centerfield wrote: When scrolling through the possibilities way back when, I really didn't think it would come down to these two. It really is impossible to predict. If we all chose our favorites from the original list it's quite likely that none of us would have chosen either of these final covers. But this is a collaborative thing, and the different perspectives we all have influence the outcome in unpredictable ways. What can really be said about our final two covers is that they had what it took, whatever undefinable thing that was, to make it through the first five rounds. Me, I really liked these two covers because they're both visually compelling, but they didn't go far at all. The one from the Post never had much of a chance, because it was a bad-news cover, but I found it very eye-catching. The one from Newsday, however, was one that I thought would do very well, but neither of them made it out of the first round. I like them both better than I do either of the finalists.
  21. According to Mets Hot Stove, the physical will take place tomorrow (Tuesday).
  22. I think we have our answer. Next question: Why does that card say "SAN DIEGO PADRES"?
  23. Am I the only one who doesn't understand the Pepsi ads and the TV Guide covers?
  24. I also agree with Edgy's lineup prediction, except perhaps we'll see Walker batting second and Wright third.
