  2. I honestly have no memory of the Mets having had a pitcher named "Laffey".
  3. The Cardinals next play the lowly Cincinnati Reds, in St. Louis, so they may not lose again for a few days. It would be really nice if they can get a loss tonight. The Giants will have a day off tomorrow and then will host the Colorado Rockies for three games. So for the first series of the upcoming week, the Mets will have the tougher opponent, although it's hard to say what kind of condition the Marlins will be in. For the final series it's advantage Mets again. They'll be in Philadelphia. The Giants will be at home against the Dodgers and the Cardinals will be hosting the Pirates. If the Mets win any one of the three games in Miami they'll clinch a better record than the Marlins.
  4. Mets magic number over the Giants is 6, still at 7 over the Cardinals, pending the outcome of tonight's game. GO CUBS!
  5. Go ahead! Steal! I got no monopoly on the facts!
  6. The Giants have scored three runs in the third and they're still batting. Giants 3, Padres 1.
  7. A Boy Named Seo wrote: I wondered if that had anything to do with anything, but I think not. Pitching Monday instead of Sunday, if anything, makes it less likely he'd hang out on a boat late Sunday night/early Monday AM, IMO. He was prob going on that boat anyway. I'm not sure I follow. He died on a Saturday night/Sunday morning. If he was scheduled to pitch a Sunday afternoon game, he probably (I would think!) would have been in bed instead of on that boat at 3 a.m. So today's game was "canceled" and not "postponed" which suggests it won't be made up. If the Marlins finish a half game out of the wild card, they'll have to circle back and play the game on Monday, which could be problematic if other tiebreaker games need to be played that day.
  8. Padres up 1-0 over the Giants in the second inning in San Diego.
  9. Ultimate Mets Database Facebook page wrote: The Mets just completed a 17-0 victory over the Phillies at Citi Field, in their last home game of the regular season. Here are some fun facts inspired by the final score of the game: Today's game was the 12th time that the Mets have scored 17 or more runs in a game, and the fifth time that the Mets scored exactly that amount. Before today, the last time the Mets scored this many runs was in a 17-1 win over the Cubs at Wrigley Field on June 27, 2012. It's the most lopsided shutout win in Mets history, but not the biggest margin of victory that the Mets have ever had. That record was set on May 26, 1964, when the Mets beat the Cubs 19-1, also at Wrigley Field. The biggest previous shutout wins were 14-0, which happened twice: July 29, 1965 against the Cubs (at Wrigley Field!) and April 19, 1998 against the Reds at Riverfront Stadium. This ties the record for most runs ever scored by the Mets in a home game. On July 8, 2006 they defeated the Marlins 17-3 at Shea Stadium. The Mets are 12-0 in games in which they've scored 17 or more runs.
  10. It's Blevins. I'll have to check the rules but I think this probably isn't a save situation.
  11. So who pitches the ninth? My guess: Montero.
  12. I think the Mets are going to win this one.
  13. Cabrera is zooming up my list of all time favorite Mets. I never would have predicted that. He's a warrior on the level of Keith Hernandez AND he looks like he's having fun out there.
  14. I can't help but wonder if the Marlins switching his start from Sunday to Monday cost him his life. If he was starting a day game on Sunday would he have been out on a boat at 3 am Saturday night?
  15. It happened at 3:15 a.m., according to the Washington Post. Boat was going at full speed when it hit some rocks. Two other people dead as well. Fernandez apparently left behind a pregnant wife/girlfriend. Also, this: The Marlins had no immediate announcement as to whether they would resume their schedule with Monday’s home game against the New York Mets. They are due to finish the season next weekend in Washington.
  16. And may there be at least another half dozen games at Citi Field this year after this one.
  17. I just checked in again. Yuck! Time to pull some of the starters. Get Cespedes and Cabrera out of the game!
  18. Okay, so the Mets made three outs on nine pitches. I'm tuning out! Maybe I'll check in again later.
  19. I'll feel a lot better if the Mets can get two or three back this inning. And Reyes makes the first out.
  20. Not terribly surprising, though. This makeshift starting rotation was going to bite them eventually. If this game turns out to be a loss, it won't necessarily kill their season. But it's certainly discouraging.
  21. Okay, so the bleeding continues. Now it's 5-0. Would an ailing Noah Syndergaard have had a worse inning? Gilmartin exits after 2/3 of an inning.
